Yeah, there's nothing racist about that song, it doesn't even refer to race. Particularly since the only remotely questionable word refers to people of all colors. (My default mental image of "thug" has always been the 1920's style mobster brute with a billy club for instance.)

The image that personifies thug to me is Robert Blake.

Given that the thread is about a controversial killing, with talk of racial profiling by the killer etc etc, it is sad you dont get the racial sentiment behind the song. It is this sentiment that makes the song racist.

And if the song was racist, he and I would be calling it out on it I'm sure. (Though I don't intend to speak for him). I've gotten long past annoyed at people claiming racism every time I use the word "thug" though. And they claim racism based off using their own incorrect definition of the word, and trying to apply it to me. I seriously had not ever even heard the word used as a code for a black guy, until someone tried to invent a charge of racism with that definition. A thus is a "tough and violent man, often a criminal". My mental image of a thug, as said above, is a 1920s style mobster carrying a billy club, or have variations such as the dumb henchmen characters on Scooby Doo, or the generic low level bad guys I would throw at the players in a city in a D&D game. Race is no factor at all in the word.

Worse, I'm convinced those beliefs that it has to be racism are based on their prejudices of what they believe those with a different opinion must believe, according to them. I think those claims of racism point more to their own prejudice and bigotry than that of those they accuse.

That's a bit further than I would go myself (as I mentioned before), but I see nothing wrong, or ugly minded about finding humor in a sad situation. Being able to do so doesn't take away one's ability to empathize about the tragedy, but being able to find laughter where you can makes you a happier person. That's why I want people laughing at my funeral for instance. I want a stand up comedian doing the eulogy, the Adam's Family theme song played for the funeral procession, the works.
