Isn't 'Chauvinism' in it's original form a kind of racism ? Chauvinism being somebody who has an overwhelming and overweening love of ones own country ( To the detriment of all others ?). If so, then I have surely seen a lot of racists on here, who wave the flag as well as the racist banner.

I think this really hinges on the clause: "to the detriment of others" If I am "chauvinist". I am "pro-me". I want what's best for me. If that means (to me) that I don't want you smoking in a restaurant where I'm eating, is that a form of hate? Nope. I just think that my wants and needs out-weigh yours. Is this a detriment to you? I guess so but it doesn't come from hate. Whether or not someone is a "chauvinist" (or a "nationalist" or a "jingoist") or a patriot largely depends upon perspective. If I say "I support tighter controls against illegal immigration", it's not because I hate illegal aliens. It's because I see what illegal immigration is doing to my country and I think it's detrimental to my country. I never mentioned hate. Racism doesn't need to be hate of any sort, just a preference for ones own kind surely ? Patriot ? Now there is a term that worries me, but only for reasons of my own. I don't smoke and smoking in restaurants in this state is illegal but by the same tolen, if I did, then surely MY wants and needs would outweigh yours because I too can be a selfish, self-centred, arrogant prat if I so wish ?
