Noticeably absent from the speaker line-up at the Let Freedom Ring event commemorating the 50th anniversary of the March on Washington today: the nation’s only black Senator, Tim Scott.

African-American leaders who did receive an invitation to speak at included Rep. John Lewis (D-Ga.) – who participated in the original March – Martin Luther King III, MSNBC host Al Sharpton and movie stars Jamie Foxx, Oprah Winfrey and Forest Whitaker.

Not surprising.

Surprisingly for some, black folk are not monolithic, and may not like the fucking guy, and it aint based on him being darker or lighter than them. It might just be his politics.

My slave didn't get an invite either, I expect there are a few black folks weren't invited to that particular soiree.

The National Mall is a public space. It is no one's fault but his own if Senator Scott was so dumb as to believe he needed an invitation to attend the event.

Jessi Jackson wasn't there either. Maybe he was visiting his son who is in the federal pen.

I suppose, to be fair, you now have a black President. That might be seen to eclipse all other considerations regarding the colour of the various speakers.

Two thoughts:

(a) It actually would have been nice to hear from a Republican.

(b) That said, a senator who lacks the savvy and/or grit to elbow his way into an event he cares about is probably in the wrong line of work.

Right, seriously, I'm sure he knew it was coming up. If he didn't get an invite, why didn't he call the organizers and volunteer?

Also, I wonder how far in advance they invite and book speakers for these kinds of events? He's only been in the Senate for 8 months - they may have made the list before he was appointed.

Had people voted last November at the same rates they did in 2004, when black turnout was below its current historic levels, Republican Mitt Romney would have won narrowly, according to an analysis conducted for The Associated Press.

Not enough angry white men left anymore.

I find you post racist. If your post is an example of republican thinking, why would anyone vote for the party ?

It`s bad enough with State Legislatures finding new ways of disenfranchisement, so tell me just why Black Americans wouldnt, indeed shouldnt, vote for more enlightened politicians ?

And all he could do was sit there, stone faced.

Yeah I thought about adding that but realised it was lame.

I look forward to your application of this same standard when you criticize any group for something.

Why? He said the voting shows it, it does not. You know what monolithic means.
