Common sense:  Having an understanding of what works for you

Foolishness:  Ridiculing and belittling what works for others.

Common sense is simply realizing that some choices serve your interests better than others.

Realizing the things your mom may have told you actually are in many cases very true: Look both ways before you cross the street, put a hat on! or you'll catch your death of a cold, etc.

I am a "dreamer" type and it's always nice if the other person has a bit of it to help me stay grounded I suppose (I think I do have common sense though).

*To me it sometimes relates to manners or inter-personal communication:
I mean, to me, it's obvious that if someone says: "Do these jeans make me look fat"? that in many cases one's answer should be: "Of course not" (no matter what one really thinks. Gosh, spare the other person a little angst if you do think they look fat, and also maybe hurt feelings)...Of course you might disagree, and to each his own. I know you are a Scorpio, KoM (and boy can you always count on them to tell it like it is, even if they do "have manners" -and sometimes: Ouch! (I am teasing)...

I know some people who reeally just don't get the common sense as-it applies to interpersonal-communications thing (least I don't think so - and I am not trying to sound arrrogant) - sometimes with amusing and sad results.

Dreams are  the stuff of life, they make the grind bearable.

But when you get right down to it-it's the anchor of common sense that lets dreams take flight-and return to earth safely once more.

Yes they do, if you can't dream you may not really be living (my opinion).

The artistry of this is, that we can bring to reality what we carry within. It takes a degree of bravery and determination to make other realities-rather than merely passively accept the ones we find ourselves within.

Some find a thrill in rigidity, and  the intensity of control. It may not always be there in force-we must live our day to day lives.

But it is there, lurking in the back ground-always.

"Common sense is the ability to look at things and figure them out without specialized knowledge or skill, but with experience and wisdom instead".

What a great definition.

I might add it is also (to me, almost every month) the ability to display knowledge of simple rules of etiquette: Every month I ask people in the dinner group I organize to let me know if
they are attending by date X (and X rarely changes; it's almost always the 2nd Friday of the month - that has very rarely changed in 11 years). And then - every month - there are at least 2-3 folks who show up and there are no chairs for them at the restaurant because I made a reservation for X number of people and then Y number show up. Then they get embarrassed (sometimes) and I scramble around finding extra seats (this can be very difficult if it is a popular restaurant). It would be easier if I knew all of them (but I don't and in many cases, never see them again). I am not going to stop organizing the group probably but am asking myself (again): Whatever happened to the rsvp? Doesn't anybody do that anymore?

Common sense is acting in accordance with the circumstances.  A person with good common sense has such because there's also a high degree of intelligence present.  Most people mistake the word intelligent as being a synonym for "smart."  The more accurate synonym is "aware."  With this in mind, you can see how a person with high intelligence can display good common sense.  They see things as they are, devoid of interpretation, and therefore perform actions quickly, efficiently, and without error.

I fail to see how this would be interperted as common sense. Some of the most 'situation' aware people I know lack basic common sense ( police officers, fire fighters, EMT workers, the Military; and I mean no offense to those in these professions, just making a generalized example ).
From what you actually said, I would call that 'street smarts', not common sense.

Being trained to have "situational awareness" like a police officer or paramedic is not the same awareness I'm refering to; hence, your observation that they can lack common sense in carrying out their duties.  Street smarts is a good example of common sense...so is the phrase "savvy to the situation."

Street smarts get a bad (undeserved) rap from some people I think. They make them sound so tough or something (like if you possessed them you'd be a gangster). Aren't they also just simple "survival skills"?

My best friend had much street smarts in contrast to my book smarts. I had to earn my street smarts, and believe me, they came hard earned because of my naivety. I appreciate someone with natural street savvy personally.. it is an important type of intelligence to have
