ok we have common courtesy and now for common sense.

So often I read the boards and get the feeling that a person's approach to living the lifestyle within the society that we exist in defies common sense.  But, of course my opinion is largely is dependent on my own judgement of what common sense is compared to foolishness

So what is your idea of Common Sense!?

So what do you consider Foolishness!?

Common sense is simply thinking things out in a rational and flexible manner to make your desires come true-you fit your needs into the framework of reality.

Foolishness is insisting that reality meet your fantasy-but being too lazy or ignorant to do the work to make it happen.

Common sense to me is generally known knowledge applied to every day life.Example: knives cut so you're careful with them.

Foolishness to me is falling down the same hole twice.

If you come across a hose that has a leak in the middle, the hose has a leak in the middle and needs to be patched. If the hose is leaking out the end, that's the proper area for the water to come out of. Common sense, in both cases, unnessary water is leaking from the hose, turn off the water.

Common sense to me is not doing things that are counter productive.
 
For example, I know someone who is in the habit of whenever one of their lighters are empty just throwing it back in with all their other lighters. This causes them to constantly pick up and try to use empty lighters and they usually get very frustrated and angry when this happens. These are regular disposable 50 cent lighters and not being saved for any particular reason. They buy new ones all the time. There is a garbage pail right next to the place where they are kept. It defies common sense that they are not simply thrown away when empty because it would save so much time and aggravation.
I believe my mother would have referred to it as "cutting your nose to spite your face"
 
Common sense is also knowing about the simpler things like:
 
Fire is hot
Water is wet
Sharp things can cut you
etc.
 
Basically things you should learn when you are very young no matter what culture or place you are from because if you don't know even that, how can you be expected to survive?
Unfortunately many people seem not to have grasped the finer points of common sense, I wonder what things would be like if everyone did........

Common sense is awareness of all outcomes in a situation and taking responsibility for yourself.
 
Foolishness is ignoring all possible outcomes and blaming other people when it goes wrong.

One example of common sense, would be to avoid calling oneself a slave, and then approaching a TPE Master with a list of hard limits that takes five hours to read.[:D]

Common sense, interesting topic. Especially as each of us seem to have a different opinion of what it is. We often look at people who are acting in a manner that we think is unwise and wonder if that person has any common sense, while they may very well think they are using it.  Or maybe it is that they are ignoring what common sense would tell them to do or not do.

For example, it is common sense that one can not consistently spend more than one earns, but we do it all the time to one degree or another as the credit card companies and bankrupcty courts can attest to.

It is (at least to me) common sense that one does not quit one's job, pack one's belongings and move to go serve someone that you have never met or have rarely seen, but people seems to do it all the time. And will vehemently defend their decision to do so if someone else tries to mention the aforementioned piece of common sense.

It is also (again to me) common sense to both get tested and ask any potential sex partners to get tested prior to engaging in unprotected sex. But that is again a piece of common sense that all too often get ignored in the rush to get what we want.

And that basically sums up my definition of foolishness, it is the behavior we exhibit when we are impatient about getting the things that we want. Most of us want people to share our lives with, whether as a Dom or a sub, we want nice things, most of us wish to have sex (to use the previous examples). But when we get impatient or overwrought about getting what we want right now, more often than not, the behavior we exhibit is foolish or unwise behavior and the results we get are not the results that we wished for.

So though i don't think i have addressed the whole of what common sense is, i hope i have answered the part about foolishness.

Common sense is applying what you know to a new situation and getting the response one wants.  Foolishness is trying the same solution over and over again to the same or similar problem and failing everytime without looking at other solutions.

In the context that you are asking, my common sense allows me to ignore some social mores such as not hitting a woman to use an extreme. Not to debate hitting a woman v. playing with her in a consensual scene because I think you get my meaning. My common sense tells me that a woman can be taken and treated roughly in the context of bdsm.

ahhh but that can be countered by the guy at batting practice, who hits the ball over and over again.
So it's all in what it is we're trying to achieve and is it realistic to continue to do the same thing over and over. One makes sense in that practice makes perfect. The other is, if I don't look at what's right in front of me and trying to walk through the coffee table everyday, this bruise is never gonna go away.

Common sense is the ability to look at things and figure them out without specialized knowledge or skill, but with experience and wisdom instead.

Foolishness is more elusive to me, what one considers foolish another may consider someone that is taking calculated risks. A good many things that one may consider to be foolish in one time or place make perfect sense in another time or place. I guess it takes common sense to figure out when something is foolish or just a calculated risk?

As far as being a foolish person, I consider people that do not think about outcomes to be foolish. If you thought about the outcome and considered the risks then you usually are not a foolish person, even if your risks turn out badly... you took a chance. A race car driver calculates risks and decides to risk their life for a gain. A speeding driver that endangers others including themselves recklessly is a fool...both engaging in the same behavior, both taking risks.. one calculated it and the other didn't care to think about the outcome. It takes common sense to see the difference..smiles

I guarantee that even though he is hitting the ball over and over he is varying the way he hits it to get the desired affect.
 
After all, why keep doing something in a way that isn't producing the desired result? It's like hitting the volume button to change the channel. No matter how many times you hit it, it's not magically going to turn into the channel button and you're going to get a headache after a while from the volume-not to mention being fustrated.

My own idea of common sense is knowing what is good/bad/right/wrong for yourself
My idea of foolishness is disregarding that which I would consider common sense.

Common sense... researching... finding out all one can about something.... taking cautions that might be needed.... proceeding slowly...

Foolishness.... throwing all information out.. diving head first in... and when it blows up... it was never anything YOU personally did....
