I was trying to ask the gyno about it and she said no, as far as we know there's no once a month or once a week pill or anything like that, and I saw a commercial a bout it, so i do know there's a bc pill you don't take everyday. I just can't remember the name of it. any one know?

Are you thinking of the patch? I know those are changed once per week.

I also read a news story a while back about a theoretical once-per-month pill but it worked more like the morning after pill, and there was a great deal of political opposition.

I'd never trust myself with a once a week pill - taking one every day makes it part of the routine and harder to forget.

Athena nailed it. It's a patch, not a pill.

There is also and injection that lasts for about 6 months, but it wouldn't recommend it if you're sensitive to hormones (it made me go absolutely crazy).

I personally preferred IUDs, because you have nothing to worry about with those... until I got pregnant with one. I guess they really mean those "you have a 0.001% chance of getting pregnant with this birth control" stats.

Yaz and Yasmin are both normal take-one-a-day-pills, which have been found to have life threatening side effects that weren't properly disclosed. There is a lawsuit going on, and an accompanying TV commercial trying to get users of said birth control to contact the lawyers in question.

Nope, that is an everyday pill.

My guess is you are thinking of the patch too.

There is also a the NuvaRing but that is inserted once a month and left in place for 3 weeks.

There is the IUD that is good for 5 years.

Lizard was on the shot for a couple of years. When her period starts again, she is getting the IUD. I know Bo hates dealing with her PMS.

I was lucky, my periods were a walk in the park, but i was happy to have depo stop them. because as easier as they were, none was better. Not every has that experience with depo though i hear. some people do not have their periods stop

FR~

My ex got pregnant with both our kids whilst using a IUD.
Hers was a U-shaped one originally and after the first pregnancy she had a T-shaped one fitted which was supposedly better.
After the second child she went on to Depo - never got pregnant after that - just 1 jab every 3 months.
So from my experience, IUD's aren't anywhere near as good for stopping pregnancies.

Just from a male perspective, I could always feel the IUD when having sex and I'm not a particularly big guy.
It didn't feel nice and it often hurt - either me or her or both of us if I caught it wrong.
Personally, I don't rate them at all; from a protection or sex PoV.
Unless you use a different formula over the pond (which wouldn't surprise me), Depo is very successful here and it's only once every 3 months.

But I'm just a guy... so who actually cares about my opinion?

freedomwarf, i appreciate all feed back on this issue.

I got information on an IUD and the risks were to scary for me, and plus you are supposed to feel for the strings every week or so often to make sure it's still there, and it can fall out, and if i wanted something i had to check on all the time, or worry about malfunction of some sort, i would go on the everyday pill. but since i don't. I am very fond of depo.

options:

the pill- actually only 2 of them contain the massive amounts of hormones that block pregnancy, the rest are just placebos or low management doses so your body doesnt freak out-$90(prices all include the cost of the trip to the clinic to get the prescription/surgery)

the patch- once a week exchange- $100

the ring- every 3 weeks $90

depo shot- lasts 3 months-$100

arm insertables- last 3 years-$800-$2000

iud- last up to ten years if you use the non hormonal version-$3000-$5000

sterilization using an insertable in your fallopian tubes or getting them tied or removed- permanent in most people(sometimes there is regrowth of the tubes if you have a particularly hardy immune system)- upward of $10000

or methods for men- a foam they get flushed through their junk once, it lasts 10 years and prevents hiv, costs next to nothing, can be removed at anytime and doesnt have any hormones or alter their ability at all.... but they cant get enough people for the human testing phase to be complete because guys believe it should be the womans problem.... sad really

I'm  on a mini-pill that you do take once a day, but it does stop (many women's) periods. If you want to know the name of it, just let me know.

The copper IUD I had you didn't have to check every week, nor could you feel the strings during intercourse (which btw on any IUD is a sign they weren't cut short enough and something your OBGYN can fix if you ask them). If it's placed properly it shouldn't be able to fall out either, so if it doesn't come out in the first month or so, you should be good for 5 years without worry... except of course that I got pregnant with mine after it was placed perfectly, functioning as it should, and stayed in place exactly where it was supposed to be...

Are you serious???? WTF??? Why on Earth would it cost that much?

I got mine for $75 or so... including the OBGYN visit.

It takes 5 minutes to stick it in, and doesn't use any sedation or anything like that, so even with the US's absurd health care costs, how on Earth would they manage to hick the price up that absurdly?

I can't get over how expensive birth control is in the US. In the UK all forms of prescription contraception are free (and there are many places you can get free condoms too).

I dread resuming the search for the right birth control (hoping for a 2014-15 baby so thankfully have some respite now). I had to come off the pill entirely because there is no version available that doesn't use lactose as a filler. Thinking of getting the implant but I'm worried I won't suit the hormones.

Otherwise, it's gonna be snip, snip, snip for the boss man.

get your tubes tied. It's really the only way that's almost pregnancy worry free. I had mine tied over 12 years ago now and don't regret a thing. Yeah I still get that time of the month but I can live with it. No more pills or shots or any of that.

As for the prices stated...yeah, wtf??? Hell, my tubal only cost $5,000 and I never paid even close to those prices you stated, even without insurance. Women can get birth control for almost nothing.

sorry i haven't looked back at this thread in a while, i based those costs off of the base. most clinics will offer prices based off of salary or affordable options IF you can prove your salary or residence, i.e. tax records, social security, bank statements, id, check stubs... if you have those things you can sign up for the affordable options and the price of the paraguard iud for example drops to between 300-900 based on location, availability, your health records, how risky it is for them to do it etc. i based the prices off of the top range assuming someone went into a clinic without any records to acquire any discount in those cases the trip alone is $65(if you get them to cut out the urine tests, otherwise its $15 more) the depo shot itself only costs $35 but since you have to go in to get it it cost me $100, though i got them to drop it down to $94 because that was all i had and the nurse paid covered the rest for me in that case, they were really nice. they told me at the time that i could get it for free if i could find the required information to sign up for whatever it was that the womens preventative care bill was called. but at the time that wasnt a possibility and i never assume it is so i place the highest possible.

as for an earlier post, the iud cant fall out, sometimes it is expelled by your body this isnt very likely though and usually only happens for people who have had 3 or more kids and are getting it too soon after. you dont have to check the strings and after a year you cant even feel them if you try, they just say you can to ease your nerves when you first get it put in.

good luck with the depo op hopefully you don't have too bad of side effects.
