When i shoot my muzzle loader i use Pyrodex it is by far less messy.
It's always funny though when you have some new shooters plinking away with a .22 and then the .50 speaks..... it gets their attention [:D]

MasterCaneman -> RE: Guns (12/14/2013 9:53:40 AM)

I was at a range and a guy came in with a repro Remington 1858. That was impressive, to say the least.

Some time in 2014 I am thinking about opening my private fire arms range to bdsm lbgt folks by appointment .
A way to experience fire arms without the the macho vanilla baggage found at most gun ranges.
Thoughts??

Not sure what gun ranges you have actually shot at. The ones I have do not have what you speak off. In fact the gun ranges seem to be catering a lot more to females. Prior to my move last year I shot weekly. There were as many women shooters as there were males. But maybe a location thing?

Edit to add:
If you are looking to make a profit out of this, I think you will find the numbers will not work. Similar to what I mentioned in the other thread about someone wanting to start a B&B for BDSM folks, you need to do the math to see if its even viable.

HntersToy -> RE: Guns (12/14/2013 12:16:40 PM)

My thoughts are that you don't have a very good business strategy. Catering to a limited cliental is from the start a very bad idea. If you want to make a successful money venture, your focus should be on all who have pocketbooks and wallets. Rent and supplies don't come cheap.

shadowborn61 -> RE: Guns (12/14/2013 12:32:24 PM)

A buddy of mine has a pair of Mosin nagants that are a lot of fun to shoot and very accurate. The recoil is not for a novice shooter though.
My uncle had a 7mm Mauser that i loved to shoot and a friend from years ago had a lever action .44 magnum to go with a S&M model 29 (think Dirty Harry) that were a sweet pair.
I have always wanted to shoot a Barrett .50 at range and see if i am really as good as i think i am[;)]

shadowborn61 -> RE: Guns (12/14/2013 12:36:52 PM)

Just reading the OP again and i do not think they intend to be a kink only range just that they want to offer private range time to those who may want it but are not comfortable being with shooters who are much more experienced.
I have known novice shooters who did not want to look like a "noob" in front of others they did not know and they were not into the lifestyle or LGBT.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Guns (12/16/2013 5:52:44 AM)

I read the post as the OP had a private range and wanted to open it up exclusively to that demographic. Now, she can do anything she wants with her own "private" range, but I got the impression it was a backhanded dig at hetero vanillas. Just to satisfy my curiosity, I called two privately-run commercial ranges in my area and two of the clubs to see what the criteria for booking private sessions would be.

Not one specified sexual orientation as a deciding factor. The only restrictions I was informed of were: no felons, shooters must be sober and over the age of majority unless accompanied by a parent or guardian, and in the case of the clubs, had to supply their own hearing and eye protection.

I commend the OP for attempting to introduce more folks to the shooting sports. It's fun, relaxing, and scares the hell of the powers-that-be when more people are into it. I would just say that perhaps she could have worded her original post better.

shadowborn61 -> RE: Guns (12/16/2013 7:38:55 AM)

I agree with You MasterCaneman especially about making the powers that be nervous. As long as we can maintain our right to bear arms we have a fighting chance at staying free.
i have always believed that the only good gun control is the ability to hit your target.

As a business, you want to serve a large clientele. By restricting it to only kinkfolk and/or LGBT that like to shoot, you're catering to a pretty small group.

that's not true, Coccinelli, Armani, Prada, Ferrari, Lamborghini, Aston Martin, Porches, Henri Jayer, Chianti wine producers, resturants with a micheline's star... just to make some examples are all business that make huge profit by reducing their clientele, how much does a common shooting range charge? how much would a group of BDSMers pay for a private kinky party with the possibility to shoot? what maximize the profit a lower price or a better service? It's not so easy to say.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Guns (12/17/2013 10:25:56 AM)

I may be in a better position to answer that, as I am an officer at a range. Generally, commercial ranges open to the public can charge anywhere between ten and twenty dollars an hour, depending on the amenities they have. Private groups tend to be given flat rates based on two to four hour sessions, and they stress longer ones if there are new shooters present in order to allow enough time to slowly introduce them to the regimen and weapons.

In the past, we've charged flat rates ranging from 250 to 400 dollars based on the size of the group, but we're a private range. I've heard of similar rates charged, usually in conjunction with follow-up visits. Speaking from my own experience, we've hosted everyone from Scouts to local businesses and social groups who want to try something different.

I was at a gun show about two years ago and they were selling Mosin Nagants for $100 apiece. They came with ammo pouches, cleaning kits and bayonets. I really couldn't justify buying one. So I bought two! One is from 1940 and one from 1943. You can actually see how the war was going based on the detail in the finishing on those rifles.

Anyhow, I went with a friend to the local range and we blew through over 100 rounds: you aren't kidding about the recoil - it's the metal butt plates. Accurate as all hell though.

They should be careful then. Hot brass is no one's friend. I had a young female friend I was teaching to shoot learn the hard way when I told her not to wear anything with cleavage.

I took one of the young ladies from here for her first shooting experience. I didn't warn her. You know, sadist and all. *grins evilly* It wasn't my pistol that caused hot brass to go flying between here breasts. It was the guy shooting two lanes over whose .40 S&W had a rather overpowered ejectors.

Friend of mine got one and dropped it into an aftermarket plastic stock with a recoil pad. Still a stout kick, but much more manageable, and with a little plastic surgery on it, he made the rifle look and work very nicely.

That's always a lot of fun when you have a newbie with a loaded firearm. Mine almost launched one into the next stall if I didn't wrap her up when it happened. I don't care if it's a guy or a girl, when it's their very first time shooting, I'm always directly behind them coaching. Pisses some folks off, but that's how I do it, period. Immediately behind and leaning over to their shooting side so I can see what's going on.

Oh hell yes. Did you ask: was it the repro Mark 1 with Swiss-chamfered flugels? God, the originals of those were a work of art.

MasterCaneman -> RE: Guns (12/17/2013 11:52:53 PM)

1970's vintage Uberti.

That's a great point. OP - is this a range you operate as an above-board commercial business, or one at your property for your personal use?

If it's the latter..... it seems like maybe not the best idea to invite near-strangers to shoot guns on your property? It would probably be easier and more prudent for you to get some of these folks together and see if you could rent out a local gun range once a month or something like that.

I agree with that. If it is a private range (such as a backyard range or one of those one or two station indoor deals) and something happened, chances are high your homeowner's insurance wouldn't cover it. Plus, there are many advantages of using an established range. They're generally clean, well-lit, have good lead and smoke handling equipment in place, and while it may not seem important now, bathrooms. I don't know about you, but I'd have an issue with strangers in my house while I was outside tending to the event.

That said, I would still commend the OP for wishing to help introduce new shooters and to encourage those who may not practice the sport as often or intently as they'd wish, through situations real or imagined.

Well done for not asking me what 'Swiss-chamfered flugels' are, MC. I'm impressed!

That's light headlight fluid or a left-handed smoke-shifter. I caught that on the first pass.

I was in the Army long enough to denote impossible responses. Spoken as a former private who was sent looking for a bucket of steam once. And I know that "Mark" designations didn't start occurring in weapons nomenclature until the early 20th century, so I figured it was one of those. Nice try, though. A lot of guys would've punted on that one.
