I was in the Army long enough to denote impossible responses. Spoken as a former private who was sent looking for a bucket of steam once. And I know that "Mark" designations didn't start occurring in weapons nomenclature until the early 20th century, so I figured it was one of those. Nice try, though. A lot of guys would've punted on that one.

I had no idea about 'Mark' designations in weapons nomenclature, on account of I don't know the first thing about guns.

That story of your being sent looking for a bucket of steam resonates. Way back in the dawn of time, my dad, as a new police recruit, was sent by his sergeant to the local hardware store to get a new air bubble for the station's spirit level. The proprietor said to him, 'No, we've run out. And I've also run out of patience with your sergeant. Every bloody cadet, every bloody time.'

MercTech -> RE: Guns (12/19/2013 1:22:39 PM)

No, no, no... you don't send the fellow looking for a bucket of steam, you send him looking for a steam blanket to keep the boiler warm when in idle.
(There is such a thing as a steam blanket, btw.)

The best was the girl sent to find the nearest place to find fallopian tube.
After spending most of the day being sent from work center to work center the corpsman finally told her, "an inch behind your navel".

Hang on - she didn't go looking for an underground station in London, did she? It does sound like it could be near Fenchurch Street or something. Oh gawd, how embarrassing . . .

MasterCaneman -> RE: Guns (12/19/2013 8:14:43 PM)

No, the best one I've heard was of an Airman who'd just come out of Basic and his sergeant sent him to look for 'five thousand feet of flight line". This happened to occur near where several Army units were training, and one happened to be a combat engineer unit that just happened to have roughly five thousand feet of Marsden matting, which to the uninformed, is interlocking steel plates with lightening holes that can be bolted to form roads and runways.

The airman had been bounced around and ended up at the Army bivouac, where a junior officer clued in the CO about what the kid was looking for. The CO, looking to bust Air Force balls (because that's what the Army does, when it's not fucking with the Navy), decides to play his own little joke. He tells his junior to go load up all the Marsden and drive it over to the airbase with the private. Again, a barracks tale, probably total bullshit, but there ya go.

Weren't we talking about private shooting ranges or something?

I was galley-boy on a british freighter and the second cook sent me for a bucket of steam. The freighter was a 'Reefer' ship and had a few tons of 'dry ice' on board in the fridge flat, so I chipped a chunk off and dropped it in a bucket half full of water and took it back to the galley. I got my ass soundly kicked for being a smart cocknye batasrd !!!

Some time in 2014 I am thinking about opening my private fire arms range to bdsm lbgt folks by appointment .
A way to experience fire arms without the the macho vanilla baggage found at most gun ranges.
Thoughts??

A lot of people have given input on why you shouldn't do this and how its a bad bushiness model. The fact is if you are willing to deal with the legalities and the expenses of opening a range I say go for it. You have nothing to loose but money and that stuff is worthless. If your range was local to me I would definitely visit.

Having been to many ranges around these parts I can say that most of them are nice places to shoot. Others employ unknowledgeable employee's or price gouge heavily and I have seen condescending behavior toward my female family members more than once. I choose not to visit those establishments again and don't let it bother me. It is their issue not mine. My money will go to support a range I feel comfortable at.

MercTech -> RE: Guns (12/20/2013 5:24:45 PM)

Anyway, I've never seen any macho stuff at the range.
You pay your fee, you wait your turn at a carrel, you punch your holes, you retrieve your targets, ... go for coffee.

MalcolmNathaniel -> RE: Guns (12/20/2013 7:22:11 PM)

I've never seen any of that either.

People are usually extremely polite at the range because of Niven's Law:

Never throw shit at an armed man.
