Thankyou for all the info. The reason I started using cotton swabs is that several years ago I went to a clinic where I was told that I needed to be tested for a std. The nurse inserted what looked to be a long cotton swap, maybe 6 to 8 inches long. It was inserted until I squirmed and felt I was going to pee. I always wanted to repeat the feeling.

This is exactly why you want a decent set of urethral sounds.

Along with what MM said about making sure that you have medical quality swabs for something like testing, that's something different than what you've got in mind for play. Swabs are used for tests because they are absorbent and are the material necessary to take a sample. Even a medical grade swab still has fibers that have the potential to come off, even with generous amounts of lube, depending on how much friction the swab endures. It's not like there have to be big pieces of cotton left behind to cause a urethral infection. Just very tiny particles. This isn't a place in the body where foreign contaminants are well accepted, so you want to reduce that risk to the best of your ability.

Metal sounds, on the other hand, when cleaned properly, will reduce that risk. No fibers to pull off alone makes them the better choice. You will have to learn how to sterilize them and such but it really is worth it in the long run.

I'm still going to recommend that you get some education on the practice. It's not terribly hard to learn, but there definitely are things you should know. You aren't that far off from L.A. so it shouldn't be that difficult to find a class on the subject.
