While that is high, it is not in the imediately dangerous range. However, considering all the meds you are on to get your blood pressure under control, something is very much wrong. Especially combined with the elevated pulse rate.
You should seek medical attention fast, better today than tomorrow.

Now, what excuses have you planned to not take any of the advice and keep whining?

I left a message with my PCP, just waiting for a reply.

If you do not get a response, is there a urgent care clinic you can visit?

Maybe. Or I could go to the ER. A bit worried b/c the top of my head is pounding right now and that's usually a sign it's really high. (higher than what it was this morning) I really need to get a wrist bp monitor thingy for at home.

calamitysandra -> RE: Natural/OTC ways to treat severe pain? (2/3/2014 2:22:20 PM)

You have dangerously high blood pressure and no way to monitor it at home? That is really irresponsible.

If the symptoms you are now expiriencing are pointing to a very high pressure, get to the ER right now. Blood pressure crisis is no joke.

I've been having trouble finding one that fits me. Have returned a couple b/c they didn't fit.

Go to the ER

Someone your size can't but a BP cuff at Walmart. You need to go to medical supply.

As CS said, that is a high rating but not immediate danger high. Do you know the range for norma?

The impression I get is that you really aren't all that concerned because you aren't doing anything about it. You made the post this morning/early afternoon. When did you call PCP? And you still haven't responded to what the GI doctor said about your BP reading.

I have no doubt that all of your doctors have suggested that many of your problems would diminish if not disappear if your lost some weight. Based on your current photo, I don't wonder why you are still in pain after surgery, or why your BP is high. I find it difficult to believe any doctor would do another surgery until you lose some weight because back surgery is unlikely to help when you are still exertin so much weight on your spine.

I know the normal range but having bp high like this for an extended period of time is dangerous. It's putting stress on my organs and I know it's getting super high when the pain is really bad.

GI doctor didn't say anything about my bp. I emailed my PCP shortly after my appointment.

I'm trying really hard to lose weight. Just had my thyroid medicine increased about 3 weeks ago and I'm starting to lose finally.

I found myfitnesspal.com very effective in helping me lose weight. Having awareness about my choices helped me make better ones.

So..what is the doctor's response? Certainy, he isn't going to just say, "wow, your BP is really high. See ya next month."

Several people here have suggested you question your doctor further. I suggested switching, to which you responded that your insurance company required a 30 wait fro previous visit. Obviously you have chosen to stick with the same doctor.

By the way, many doctors would hospitalize you for super high. What was the actual reading?

This was a GI doctor, not a PCP. I can only see one PCP within a 30 day period and I have to contact the insurance and change my PCP before I see the new PCP.

The bp was 159/94 and pulse was 116

What's with all these crappy doctors people keep posting about? Did that doctor just let you leave? Didn't your GI doctor want to get your PCP on the phone at least?

I usually have good BP but can get 'white coat hypertension' when I am there if I know they looking at it. If my BP is elevated they don't even let me leave until it goes back into normal range, but they at least take it a few times.

Mines been this high and higher for several months and no one has said anything really cept Friday when my PCP decided to put me on the HCTZ. I keep telling them that I'm worried about it being high but they don't seem to be.

LafayetteLady -> RE: Natural/OTC ways to treat severe pain? (2/3/2014 6:24:12 PM)

They aren't concerned that you frequently get dizzy, fall down and black out? They've seen your BP high for months and said nothing?! I find two things difficult to believe here. One that they say nothing and two that you continue to see the same doctor. Is your PCP prescribing thyoid meds? He isn't qualified to deal with your blood pressure (if your statements are trueK, but knows how to regulate thyroid meds, rather than refer you to an endocrinologist? Sure.

If I ever move to your state, you'll have to cmail his name. I wouldn't let him even treat a cold for me.

She said she's already on Diovan, Metoprolol, Spironolactone and Lasix, and THEN they started on HCTZ. That's a shit ton of meds for someone so young.

At this point, best to seriously cut back on the salt if the MDs is ok with her labs, and and get real about losing weight.

I haven't blacked out in a long time. (over a year) She changed my bp medicine on Friday b/c it's been high. And yes, she does my thyroid medicine. My old PCP did my thyroid medicine too. I've been told hypothyroidism doesn't require an endocrinologist though I have seen one in the past who pretty much did nothing. I've had hypothyroidism for 10 years.

I keep my sodium intake really low...it actually gets too low a lot and then I get muscle cramps bad. Which is one thing I'm worried about with the HCTZ...I'm pretty much chronically dehydrated as it is. >.<

Ultimatetragedy -> RE: Natural/OTC ways to treat severe pain? (2/3/2014 9:01:07 PM)

Pain after back surgery is rather frequent....there is actually a medical diagnosis/condition known as Failed Back Syndrome.

Innmate--have you any real medical training? HCTZ works primarily as a diuretic. If she had been experiencing urinary retention due to opiod use, diuretics would do nothing to alleviate the symptoms!! And would only cause more urinary retention which could lead to post obstructive renal failure!!! Pain medications do NOT directly cause fluctuations in the SNS/PNS. Pain causes increased discharge of catecholamines which in turn increase blood pressure. There are a number of ways to treat heart failure. The mainstay is to increase ionotropy and decrease chronotropy. An EKG can not be used to diagnose Heart failure as it is a lack of ionotropy and not of electrical conductance (which is what EKG picks up). Innmate, from the quality of your posts, it is evident you dont really have any medical training and thus should avoid doling out erroneous information. ANY ONE who completed medical school would be able to see the fallacy of your recommendations!

Amazon.com has dozens that will fit even the largest of arms. You can even use a wrist one if you can't find an arm cuff that fits.

I don't have urinary retention or anything. I wasn't taking enough hydrocodone to even become addicted. I have a bit of a fear of getting physically addicted to I refused to take it as much as I should have LOL

LafayetteLady -> RE: Natural/OTC ways to treat severe pain? (2/4/2014 9:10:31 PM)

Oh for God's sake! There isn't a set "dosage" where people become addicted. Some people can become addicted after one dose, others, like me, never will.

You really should do some research before you speak about certain things.
