Doesn't vitamin D make that much of a difference? We had a funny situation where he suggested to retire much much earlier so he can get his regular hours of sleep in...

I thought it would scare him but he tends to text me from work to remind me to take it, so I guess he doesn't feel too molested... Maybe you should encourage him to up his vitamin D too?

I've lost 15lbs in 2 months (from 185lbs to 170lbs) by switching to the paleo diet for managing chronic pain.
I eat about 2000-2500 calories a day, currently rarely exercise, and eat any time I want, any thing I want that's legal on the diet. I'm not even trying to loose weight, and I've dropped 2 pant sizes. My husband has as well, just from me cooking different stuff for him.

I imagine that combined with exercise as well as calorie management, this diet could do wonders for weight loss in a very short amount of time.

On Friday I decided it was time to check out style options for pants since the ones in my closet were bagging at the legs.  I headed over to the local fat people store where I regularly shopped and sought out the thinnest leg styles I could find.  I bought my size and discovered later they were baggy and returned them to the store, replacing them with a size 14/16.  Wowie.. they fit.
Goodie.
But, I still look fat.
What do I do to lose inches around my waist and behind?  I recognize that as long as the issues with my digestion have not been fixed I will still have problems dumping stomach contents but there has to be a way of losing weight around the waist.
Any tips?

A Food that helps with belly fat and digestion is yogurt. You will notice a difference by adding it to your daily regimen. Activia is the best and then greek as far as active cultures (also good for immune system...over 80% in digestive tract).
This is going to sound cliche but drinking water. Get rid of sugar drinks and eat fruit. It's a matter of picking healthier alternatives for the foods you crave. Example: brown rice instead of white. Brown spaghetti instead of bleached etc.
These small tweaks make a difference. KEEP A WATER BOTTLE WITH YOU AT ALL TIMES. Think of it like your crutch, you need it, you can't do without it. Drinking 8-16 oz in one sitting I'd recommend. For 16 oz, 4 times a day, 8-twice as much.
If you want really dramatic weight loss with the abs and all that, I recommend the beach body workouts.
I'm 31 and a size 1 and never thought I could have this shape. My starter workout was Insanity with Shaun T. I was a smoker when I started it and couldn't do a single pushup. I'm lazy but figured "one workout is as long as a cartoon or even half a movie", think about how fast half an hour goes by. In that half an hour you can do this just for you. Sixty days later I went from flab and unable to lose weight and gaining even after 3 hours of biking, to FIT, more fit than I've ever been in my life. Since then I branched off into weight lifting and crossfit and fitness is my life. I had to quit smoking for Insanity and never restarted.
If you need a fun workout I'd recommend hip hop abs by Shaun T, he guarantees you lose 3 inches in 3 days and you learn some awesome dance moves. I can tell you it works. I started gaining no matter what calories I cut after I hit 25. Now I eat cake if I want cake, I eat carbs, I don't diet. I no longer have back pain from being top heavy (bra). Just a huge difference in your body. Before I would bike for 3 hours, cut calories down to almost nothing and drink nothing but tea but was still gaining. Women's bodies are like that. Men retain muscle easier and we retain fat. So I'm a testament that these particular workouts do work. And you only have to push yourself for 40 mins unlike my 3 hours of biking that did nothing for me.
Here are the workouts if interested:
Insanity Workout
Hip Hop Abs (fun workout)

I don't know what your digestive issues are, but have you looked into the paleo diet? There is mounting (sound, research-based) evidence that the paleo diet not only aids weight loss, but can improve or clear up various medical conditions, including IBS and Crohn's. I have personal experience with this, and while anecdotal evidence isn't as good as real research, I can happily report that going paleo improved my health considerably.

While, I would love to go Paleo also- my endocrinologist basically told me not to- discuss with your doctor- especially if you have a thyroid issue. I can't eat a lot of the veggies that supply Paleo dieters with critical nutrients.

However, I have in the past, and now even, had great success with Weight Watchers.

I'm lucky in the respect that my thyroid dysfunction has never influenced my weight all that much (though if 10 lbs decide to stick and shifting them is as hard as for my other half shifting 40 lbs, it is a pisser, though I get the period pains from hell just so that I don't feel too cocky about the weight) but yeah, a lot of diets are just out when your thyroid doesn't work as it should... Btw the vitamin D should help with shifting weight a lot.

1) My own policy: do the exercise that you like doing, because it's long term habits that are important
2) Check how your belly feels after food. You don't need to feel satiated.
3) Er
4) That's it.

Weight loss isn't magic.

If Calories in > Calories out, then gain weight.

If Calories in < Calories out, then lose weight.

Doesn't always work, got a friend who messed up her metabolism this way, she also has a thyroid issue and wasn't getting properly medicated, due to the joint pain she got from the thyroid problem her exercise was reduced to mostly swimming but it also tended to sap her energy, so everything was a major effort, she kept cutting calories and her body just got so used to burn the absolute minimum.

The work out more and watch what you eat works for healthy people, if you're severely hypo, it can cause real issues, especially since a lot of the "healthy foods" are everything but healthy for a hypothyroid person.

Before going on paleo, it didn't matter what I did. Even on 1500 cal/day weightloss was painstakingly slow, I was in chronic pain, and the second I'd try to up my calories after cutting them the weight would come back... and then some.

Currently I'm on at least 2000 cal/day, but a lot of days go over that (sometimes by a lot). My pain is gone. And any day where I actually strictly stick to the diet I drop a little weight, or stay about the same. Days where I cheat, for whatever reason, I put on weight again. The thing is that it's really not that hard for me to strictly eat paleo and not cheat at all, I can imagine eating the rest of my life like this, especially considering that for most of my cheating, I can go gluten free and make it only a half a cheat. (Rice flour is technically not allowed, but it's much much better than wheat, and not that harmful to me nor does it cause weightgain if consumed in infrequent quantities.)

My weightloss/gain is very clearly linked to the type of food I eat, and much less clearly -if at all as long as I don't go to real starvation extremes- to the amount of calories in/out. That's not to say that there is no connection at all, but I do not believe that the connection between calories in versus out is a sustainable one for me when it comes to weightloss.
