Missokyst -> tips for losing inches? (2/16/2014 9:09:43 AM)

On Friday I decided it was time to check out style options for pants since the ones in my closet were bagging at the legs.  I headed over to the local fat people store where I regularly shopped and sought out the thinnest leg styles I could find.  I bought my size and discovered later they were baggy and returned them to the store, replacing them with a size 14/16.  Wowie.. they fit.
Goodie.
But, I still look fat.
What do I do to lose inches around my waist and behind?  I recognize that as long as the issues with my digestion have not been fixed I will still have problems dumping stomach contents but there has to be a way of losing weight around the waist.
Any tips?

I was going to type out some long thing, but my views pretty much line up with this guys post I found.

quote:

Your body starts storing fat around your hips, thighs & essential organs(belly area). Once these places start to get hefty, your body then moves outwards towards your arms and feet. If you are at the point where you are storing lots of fat in your arms then when you burn calories, your body will take it from heavily favor fat in your arms rather than your belly fat. (This has something to do with protecting and/or warming your vital organs in the event of disaster) This is why if you start an intense running program, the first place you will start to lose fat is in your arms and lower legs. Eventually, if you continue an intense running program, that weight will start to come off of shoulders and thighs. Finally, once all of the remote fat stores are depleted, your body will start using the fat around your vitals(belly).
Your body stores fat using a F-I-L-O algorithm. (First In Last Out). An analogy: If you were to stack 10 papers, in order to get the first paper off of the stack, you would have to remove the top 9 papers. In other words, if you want to get at the belly fat, you have to attack your whole body mass % as a whole. It is impossible to "Target" belly fat. If someone told you they did a bunch of crunches and they got a flat stomach, its because of the calories they burnt, not because their stomach got amazingly strong. Having a six pack is about low body fat, not super big stomach muscles.

TLDR: No shortcuts. Gotta drop total body fat before you get abs.

This is right from my experience. That's why people do more aerobics in a week than they do target exercises. Target exercises are more for muscle definition. And it is important to do both as a person can start losing muscle mass in as little as two weeks. A well rounded exercise routine is important for overall health and weight loss.

I have found swimming to be the best *overall* exercise. I do a variety of strokes to work muscles differently - breast, crawl, backstroke - and roll more than I need to during the crawl and backstroke to perhaps work my obliques more. Before I started having all these problems with my knees, I squeezed more during the frog kick of the breast stroke. My knees apparently don't like the frog kick, so now I swim with flippers and just do the arms part.

Note I said "overall exercise" above - I'm not disagreeing with what Lynnxz posted about FILO.

I'm jealous, I can't swim. :-/

I usually end up doing the free classes at the gym, run a little bit on the treadmill (hate ellipticals), and then tool around with the weights a little, if no one is being overly enthusiastic in the free weights.

For me, it was figuring out my wheat intolerance. My belly is still flabby, but I don't have the bloat that came from within. Getting the undigested wheat out and reducing the inflammation of my gut parts really shrunk my actual waistline two pants sizes. My boobs stick out over my stomach now, instead of the other way around, and I can look down and see my feet [:)]

lol sadly my boobs shrunk with the first round of lost inches.
I went from a solid C, to a packed B cup.  I can still see tummy.  phhht.

That's where I lost a bit too, but everything evened out in the end.

not being able to spot tone is by far the worst part of exercise for me.

MercTech -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/5/2014 4:31:08 PM)

Alas, the abdomen and the backside go last.
Exercise will not spot reduce but toning the muscles will make what is left look more firm, rounded, and properly packed. <grin>

People are very bad about estimating the right amount of food we need. Worse yet, they confuse 'I am hungry' with 'I want to eat'. My submissive ate very healthful vegetarian food but the problem was for her was the amount. She used myfitnesspal with a fitbit and was very meticulous about inputting the exact amount of food she was eating, has had visible results, and doesn't feel overly hungry or miserable.

sunshinemiss -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/5/2014 4:47:54 PM)

Find an exercise you love. Personally, I have gained a few kilos this winter, but I am just chomping at the bit to get back on my bike and ride, ride ride! I adore riding and can't get enough of it. I would rather ride than eat. I would rather ride than just about anything. I know that as soon as my regular biking routine gets back on track, those few kilos will melt off.

Last year, I went on a four day, cross country ride. Didn't lose a single pound, but I went down a pants size. A pound of muscle is smaller than a pound of fat. I work my bike on harder to pedal gears as a way to increase resistance and to build muscle. Come on, Spring!

... sorry... got a wee bit excited there....

Add maca to your diet.

About 6 months ago I started putting 1 tsp in my a.m. protein drink and 10 lbs went bye bye in a couple weeks. I just wanted to eat less, though it wasn't a conscious decision.

It has not come back.

TheWillToThrive -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/10/2014 9:05:02 PM)

There is no easy answer. People generally focus on I want this part of my body to look better and forget that being healthy overall is the only real way to achieve results that are lasting and worthwhile. You can target the specific muscle group you wish to define and train it but this is something that makes a lot more difference once you are at a specific level of health. There is no shortcut sadly.

The best advice I could give is be aware of what you are consuming and exercise as much as possible. Technique matters when exercising, its better to do less correctly than more incorrectly.

Trans fats aka hydrogenated oils, high fructose corn syrup aka highly refined sugar waste, sugars period, wheat gluten, artificial anything each take a toll on our bodies. You can't avoid them all 100% of the time, that is almost impossible these days. What you can do is substitute as much good as you can for the bad. We do need a certain amount of fats and sugars to operate correctly so don't cut out all fat or sugar. Make sure your getting enough protein, you don't want to burn muscle you want to burn fat. Carbs at night are not a good idea but protein at night is, especially slow digesting casein. If you choose to use supplements go quality not cheap. Quality is worth the extra money.

Don't stress out if you eat a bag of chips or a cupcake or whatever your personal naughty food is. Stress hormones tell your body to store fat in case of emergency. Set some goals that are achievable within 2-6 weeks. Checking your weight can be a motivator or a problem. Don't concern yourself with going up and down a few lbs as this happens all the time. Whats more important is how you feel and how you look.

Eating well and exercising together are required for overall health. Combining aerobic and anaerobic exercises in the same day is less effective than having days assigned for each. This being said having both in a weekly workout routine will give you considerably better results. Lastly, changing up your workout routine every 2-3 weeks and doing new things will keep your body from adapting and your body responds best when challenged. Working out hard enough to fatigue your muscles is good sometimes but not every time. If you are hurting 2 hours after a workout you need to tone it down a notch. If you breeze through a workout you need to tone it up a notch. Your muscles should hum after a good workout, not scream. No pain no gain is misleading you shouldn't regret working out but you should know you worked out after the fact.

Thus ends some ramblings from a previous martial arts instructor and personal trainer. Hopefully someone can find these tips useful.

I think I am off to order some of it... Winter and the broken ankle added about 10 lbs (just when I was happy to actually be as fit as I want to be) sounds like this and a little bit more exercise will do the trick

It increases fertility and libido too though?
That makes me nervous- my man is already struggling to keep up with my sex drive, and we certainly aren't trying for babies.

We certainly aren't trying for babies and when I told him, he tried to not grin and said "I'll try to cope with it", but I do tend to go through phases, in winter I hibernate a bit, sunshine seems to have quite an effect on my libido, there must be a reason why he keeps on telling me that we should move to a place that gets more sun...

shiftyw -> RE: tips for losing inches? (3/11/2014 1:38:18 PM)

Yah, I've been taking vitamin d (on your recommendation) and I can't believe how much more energy I have.

But I've always had the stronger sex drive than him. I might just drive him crazy if maca makes me beg for it all the time.
