Pro-Dommes are sex workers and you are nothing but a paycheck. They are selling you a sexual fantasy, especially online ones. Does it really matter if they are a man, a woman, or a monkey trained to use a keyboard? You are inherently paying them for a fiction (that they care about you, care about your submission, etc) and for them to deliver that fiction in a convincing online manner. In answer to your original question; because there are a lot of guys who aren't really looking for anything more than a quick fix for their desires and have no intention of paying (which you basically admit to being), some Pro-Dommes demand an upfront fee to protect their time. Others are just looking for an effortless way to get money without delivering services. As TNDommeK noted, the nice thing about Pro-Domming as sex work is that the sex worker can get paid to have someone do what the Pro-Domme wants, which is a turn around from most other areas of sex work. Hell, it's a turn around from most areas of life. I wish I could find someone willing to pay me for the privilege of cleaning my apartment even if I did have to put up with them wearing a latex maid outfit while they did it.
Also, according to your profile you live in Singapore. Just go to the four floors if you want a paid sexual release. I'm sure you can find someone willing to do whatever gets your kinky rocks off there and they won't make bones about being a prostitute. If you are going to stick to online only then don't worry about if they are fake or real, you're paying someone to deliver a fantasy anyway. Ultimately all paid sex work is fake unless you can really make yourself believe an employee has power over you. Why you are looking for online play when you live in a country with legal prostitution is beyond me.
However, if you do care about fake, then only work with a Domme who is willing to meet your requirements for confirmation of their "realness". They are selling a service and you are the customer.
