MercTech -> Tasered with a stun gun???? (3/9/2014 12:59:34 PM)

Sometimes a disregard for the little facts irritates. Such as so many news reports calling anything that uses an electric charge to stun a "Taser".

Just for the record,"Taser" is a brand name for a weapon that shoots two needles trailing wires into a person then applies a large electric charge to incapacitate.

A "stun gun" is a popular generic term that isn't a gun except when applied to science fiction terminology. Although, you can use a Taser as a stun gun after the cartridge is deployed.

Stun gun:

Taser:

(In many jurisdictions, Tasers are reserved for law enforcement use only.)

Electric stunners are cheap, easy to use, and can knock a large man to his knees.

"Do you have any Kleenex?"
"No." (pulls out tissue)
"You said you didn't have any Kleenex!"
"I don't. I have tissue."

What's funny is how many people who have strong feelings on the subject are completely and happily ignorant of any associated realities, and will stubbornly remain that way.

It must be Monday, its irony day.

Sorry guys, my rant started with seeing a local reporter keep saying "... used an illegal Taser on him". In actuality, and you could see watching the film they showed, she was using a cheap purse size contact stun gun that is perfectly legal here.

wouldn't the use of anything causing pain/harm still be considered assault? which I would think would be illegal.. or are things different where you are?

Yes, I'm aware of how time zones work, but I'll not have a Monday shoved in my face before I even get my Walking Dead fix on Sunday.

It does however, offer a nice way to loop off Polite's snark and the little hijack, and back onto topic.

There are different time zones, and we operate with a mutual understanding of what they are.

We can divide the day into all sorts of different periods, have all sorts of different ways of referring to those periods, perhaps even agree that a fancy Rolex watch is a fine way to keep track of time.

This does not mean that someone who has vaguely heard of time can proceed successfully in the world, or communicate in a comprehensible manner with those better informed, by assuming that "Rolex" refers to all manner of time-keeping, or describes the various times of day.

We have a technology that allows one to temporarily incapacitate another by means of electrical impulses delivered from a device. Some of the devices that do this are stand-off types that shoot electrodes, some require the user to get right up close and personal. I own one of the latter type, and it lives in a drawer of my desk at work. It is not a Taser.

Get it right.

Surely the key thing is whether the owner of the stun-gun/Taser/phaser/whatever-we-call-it issues three warnings before using it. [;)]

I see the smiley, DC, and know you are having a bit of fun, but no. If I need to bring my (completely CA legal - asked a DA about it) stun gun into use on someone, they get no warnings.

Now it can be fun to spook a sub with the sound of one, before using something completely different, but these are devices that require you being able to physically reach the target, and in a way that they won't just bounce off it, before the central nervous system is affected and they go down quietly for a little bit.

No snark from me Rich, even the company involved marketed the Taser as a stun gun, proving those trying to look superior need to do some research.

Oh boy.......... The arrogance of this statement is stunning.

No matter wtf you wish to think, Monday in the UK, is still fucking Monday, time zones or not.

TheHeretic -> RE: Tasered with a stun gun???? (3/10/2014 6:26:19 AM)

While Sunday afternoon in SoCal is still Sunday afternoon. Your specific reality may vary, Polite.

You ain't special. Get over it, and have a nice evening.

This, coming from a man who complains about personal attacks, is just more irony.

I doubt those posting on the Eastern Seaboard would suggest it is Sunday morning in Cali, rather than use EST.

Ex boyfriend is shown on surveillance camera driving up, getting out, and grabbing her while entering a convenience store. She shocked him to the ground, called 911, and kept threatening him with further shocks when he tried to get up again.

Yes, using a stun gun with no provocation would be considered assault. Using non lethal non damaging force to preserve life and limb; perfectly legal and viewed more kindly than breaking a jaw swinging some of those combat weighted purses.

then you should have mentioned that in the first place.. imo you are quibbling over nits.. yes so much more important that the reporter used the (incorrect) term "taser" instead of the importance that it was used by the female to defend herself (eye roll)..
