The Mentor program is members helping new members, with staff assisting in small ways. Mentors are not staff. Mentors are not expected to coddle. Mentors are not expected to convince new members to white wash the forums. All they do is help new members assimilate into our online community that has a distinctive culture.

For over a year, maybe two, we have disallowed snark in the introduction section. The reason is that this section is for new members to say hello. It keeps those that find entertainment in flaming any minuscule misstep someone may make, from ripping up new members that may have made an honest mistake in an introduction.

Soon there will be an entire new section for New Members. There will be FAQ's and other informational things all in one place to assist them.

There will still be new members that no amount of mentoring or being nice to will help. All this program was designed for is to allow members that want to help, to be able to help and see if we can retain good new members into our community.

While Mentors are not staff, they are still volunteers. Volunteers are needed in any community to assist in various services. I appreciate and applaud those people that have stepped forward to try and assist this community, your community, and maybe improve it. Only time will really tell, but at least there are people in this community willing to make that attempt.

Thanks for being a part of CollarMe,
Gamma

As I said before, new people often get hell for "asking", which is pretty awful, there is a massive difference between phrasing something wrong and looking for wank fodder, and there will always be trolls (beware of school holidays).

It would really be nice to have new blood around, could I suggest a sticky at the introduction board with the names of mentors, so the newbies could ask them questions? It might make it a bit easier for them.

Can we add a category called the shark tank? Just for those "snark" approved threads... imagine the feeding frenzy, the pool of sharks waiting for a thread to be sent to the tank. I mean, really, some posts are like chum in shark infested waters.

Good idea about the list of Mentors. At the moment it is just test run and the new section should be available next month. A sticky with the current list of Mentors may be something they wish to do.

Thanks,

So far the Mentors are pretty good about jumping on the welcome wagon. A C/P blurb such as:

"I am a Collar Me Mentor, if you have any questions about the forums, or would like advice about posting/interacting on the forums, please press the "PM" button on the bottom left of this post, and I will happily assist you."

Jus sayin

I'm actually looking forward to the newbie section going live. I think it will be a bridge between new people and the rest of the forum that ends up serving both the new folks and the regulars. I don't claim to be nice, but I have a knack for explaining things clearly, so I'm the resident FAQ writer.

I'm not sure a FAQ with the names of all the mentors is feasible though. We don't know how much turn over we're going to have and keeping it up-to-date could end up being more effort than it's worth. That's why most of us have "Forum Mentor" in our signature lines to help people find us.

As a side note - we're looking for bilingual mentors who can help with translation for non-native English speakers. If anyone's interested, PM Gamma or Chi.

Thank you, LP. I do think it has a nice ring to it and after all I have been called worse.

Is that bilingual thing aimed at me? Yeah, I give it a shot my German is a lot better than my English, Italian I'm a fluent speaker but not writer, same with French...

As for the sticky, a newbie might not recognize the sig line "forum mentor" or have time to look around for it, so a simple "Trying to fit in? Not sure what's cool? Here are a bunch of people to ask when in doubt" might help a few of them out...

Right now, each mentor is assigned new people in groups according to the letters their usernames start with. That mentor is responsible for writing to and helping those new people. So far so good, but who knows how things will be done over time. So far, it's working good. I'm feeling positive about things so far.

Well...you know...if you want to volunteer...

Anyone bilingual in any language is welcome, although European languages will be most helpful. Every newbie gets a welcome letter with the name of a mentor as a point of contact. Right now, we're still in the trial phase, so some tweaking is bound to happen. A FAQ with all the names is something the Mod Squad would have to maintain since they're the only ones with the ability to edit posts at any time. The rest of us mere mortals can only edit posts for a finite period. It will depend on whether or not they want to keep up with it.

I think changing the list of mentors might be a matter of minutes and could be done on a weekly basis...

As far as I can see, until Easter I'm having a hell lot of free time (actually bored) so if you guys need translations to German, cool, but I'd say most Germans will have a pretty good working knowledge of English, so just hit me with what you need to have translated, after that pretty much on the road but I usually take an iPad with me, so it wouldn't be a big deal. Tell you what, might break the boredom of long flights... An uncle regularly abuses me for pretty intricate medical translations (damned hard to tell your family to stuff it), so I think what you ask for might be a hell lot easier...

We'll have to get Chi on it. She's good at such things.

As for the rest, I think a list of forum mentors would be a great idea.

Snark (outside of Introductions) is fine; personal attacks are not.

I expect certain threads in Random Stupidity to be snark infested.
