First, like the term "morning sickness," "night sweats" aren't really just at night. They aren't merely a little nuisance either. I'm sure some get what they call night sweats when they get that momentary, boil from inside feeling. That sis not what I'm talking about. I'm talking about all of a sudden breaking out in a sweat for no reason. A clothing drenching sweat.

Ok, so we started the methamazole for the hyperactive thyroid and hope it will alleviate this issue. But in the meantime I have to, pardon the pun, "sweat it out." Give the meds time to work. But it sucks. I can't change my clothes and take a shower every time this happens, I don't own that many clothes. Shit, paris Hilton doesn't own that many clothes.

The other day, I was coming home from physical therapy. It was maybe 35 degrees outside. My vision kep getting blurry, then clear, then blurry. Like when you get an eye goober that crosses your pupil, you know? Turns out that the hot flash kept steaming up my sunglasses.

I get drenched in sweat, then the flash stops and I freeze as the persperation evaporates. Both bedroom windows are open and usually the window fan is on. My bedroom tends to be kept at less than 50 dgrees just so I can hopefully stay cool enough to sleep. Of course, I wake up several times a night freezing before the next heat wave.

I shower, but before I can even finish combing out the knots in my hair, I'm dripping with sweat again.

I've got multiple health problems, several pretty serious, like the diabetes, but all I want is to not feel like I'm sitting in my own tropical hell 24/7. To not be dreading what is predicted to be a brutally hot summer so that when it is 90 degrees outside, I don't feel like I'm sitting in 150 degrees with no relief. Evrything else seems minor compared to this.

It sucks and I need it to stop.

Rant over.

At times, especially when I am trying to sleep, I get a hot flash. Toss the blanket to one side and pray the sheet is enough. NOPE! Still too damn hot so the sheet gets tossed too. Now I am sleeping in a nightshirt with a nekkid butt which gets cold. Make up your mind, body! Hot or cold! I just want to get some sleep!

Try shorts. What you are talking about would be like heaven.

I'm not simply too hot, I'm literally dripping with sweat. The sheets, my pjs, all wet from it. That's the only time I'm getting cold is because the perspiration is evaporating, leaving me in the wet clothes.

I had hot flashes just as you described. The roots of my hair were always damp from sweating. I looked back through my notebooks on herbs, and found Black Cohosh. Holy cow. It was like a miracle.
Within a week, the sweats were dialed down to a few moments of my face flushing a bit.

I get the exact same problem if I take Tramadol.

I take various pain meds but if things get too bad where I need the Tramadol, the OH knows she is in for a washing marathon.
When I wake up in the night, I'm soo soaked that it looks like I've just stepped out of the shower.
The bed & bedding is sopping wet.
I don't mean just from a bit of sweat, I'm talking about if I pat the pillows (and these are feather pillows), it actually splashes!!
And I don't wear anything at all in bed and don't have the duvet or even a sheet over me.

When I'm up during the afternoons/evenings, unless I've been out, I'm only ever wearing my underpants, nothing else.
If I get another flush, the computer chair I'm sitting on gets absolutely soaked and my hair is just dripping.
The sweat is running in streams down my arms and body.
I'm not talking the odd bead of sweat or damp hair, literally streams of sweat and my hair is drenched.

So I'm wondering LL, is there some of your medication causing this??
I know that Tramadol works well as a pain med but it causes me to sweat like billio.

I get the same LL
My personal laundry some weeks consists of 6 or seven sheets heaven knows how many pillow cases and pillows, and towels by the dozen
its gotton to the point that when I get them I have big bath sheets under my side of the bed, a light blanket, my quilt and a spare pillow I also keep sheets in a drawer close by so I dont have to get too cold trying to get back to sleep.
Ive always burned hot, and been going thru the sweats since I was 37(im 52 now) ive tried the cohosh, it works on and off with me, usually ok with the period sweating, but my liver issues also cause me to itch and heat me up like no ones business and that is a nightmare of itch sweating clammy wetness that soaks thru four layers to the mattress. I even tried using incontinence pads but the plastic backing made it even worse.
I cannot handle summer above 76 degrees well at all, I prefer the cold. its not unusual this winter to see me outside with gloves and a scarf , tshirt and shorts and winter boots sitting outside trying to cool off.

BB,

I used to take something with Black Cohash in it, the generic, I think, of Estrovin. But right now, the endo doesn't want me to take anything so we can see if the methamazole is working. I understand his thinking, but I'm just so sick of this!

FD,

Not a drug causing it. Likely my thyroid problems. I'm allergic to tramadol, but before that developed, I never had that problem. So many other pain killers, can't you just switch to something else?

Lucy,

Oh my fucking God, YES! That's it on the money. Except I don't have a washer/dryer here and certainly can't afford to go to the laundramat every day. If I had the means to wash everything I sweat through, I might be less annoyed (but not by much at all, lol).

Yesterday, I was so exhausted when I cam home from PT for my neck, I ate dinner and went up to bed before 6. When my bladder was forcing me out of bed, I thought it must be like 3 or something. It was 10:55! So I haven't been back to bed since. Its getting to a point where I dread going to bed because its more exhausting than not sleeping at all.

I already need to have my electric throw between the fitted and top sheets because my feet are always cold, but also because when the flash stope and all that sweat starts to evaporate I'm freezing. So I'm falling asleep and waking up over and over all night.

Technically not supposed to go back to the endo until like the third week in April, but I don't think I can keep going at this rate for much longer. And with summer coming?! I'm already trying to figure out how to get him to say AC is medically necessary so insurance will pay for a second AC unit. The one doesn't cover the whole house so it basically takes out the humidity, that's it.

LaffeytteLady,
I feel your pain, I was finally in menopause, got sick, have to take hormone pills. I swear sometimes just blinking will bring on the sweats. I sleep with the window cracked, fan on, buck naked except for heavy socks because my feet are always cold. Yeah, ain't I a vision???

Anyway, I don't have any grandmas home cures for you, just lots of sympathy and hopes that you can banish the sweats soon.

I know you're getting the Vit D checked, could you ask your endo about the levels you have? Because with thyroid issues, it should be considerably higher than normal, the upper end of 150 is just right for people with faulty thyroids, when mine were really low, I was constantly freezing but then had the occasional night sweat, sometimes also during the day were all of a sudden I felt dizzy, sick and then just was soaking wet. As soon as my levels were above 50, it stopped. Can't harm to ask for a copy of the blood results.

well,... there are a few doctors that feel a persons diet (& lifestyle) are at least part of the problem..

Dr Brownstein's view on most thyroid problems is that people don't get enough Iodine in their diet, he says people should be using iodized salt (not sea salt, it needs to be iodized) but my feeling is if you are supposed to keep your salt level down, that you should try to get your iodine in other forms, like using dulse flakes, miso soup, small fishies like sardines, etc
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ku2lylX13h4

and I have seen Dr Hyman on Dr Oz & PBS talking about diet and its affect on a persons body.. he has a few books on it, his 10 Day Detox is not necessarily for everyone, imo, as its hard to adjust to if you eat a lot of processed food and stuff.. http://drhyman.com/

Now you can do whatever you want with that info, try it or not.. I just know from my experience that diet is a HUGE factor for me.. a few years ago I was in incredible pain, pain in my lower back got worse and worse, it climbed all the way to the base of my head.. I was in so much pain that I could not sleep in bed, I could not sit at my computer for longer than 2 minutes, the least painful was to stand all the time.. going to the chiropractor was ineffective so I went to an acupuncturist and he told me my problem was my stomach/diet.. I thought he was nuts cuz it was my back, not my stomach.. but I decided to google and damn if he wasn't right.. so I totally changed my diet overnight and a week later I was feeling much better, two weeks later the pain was gone.. so, imo, diet is for many people part of their health problems.. I however don't know what your diet is so I am just throwing this info out there, for anyone..

I have never tried one of these but what about using a Chillow? its supposed to help you stay cooler when you sleep.. you can buy them online or at Bed, bath & beyond & target.. https://www.chillow.com/ You can buy it at walmart too and they have their money back guarantee policy if it doesn't work for you.. http://www.walmart.com/ip/As-Seen-on-TV-Chillow/27457141

It sounds like you have Graves Disease. Both my mother and aunt have it. I watched my mom gow through all of that. The good news is you are getting on top of it. I bealive diet and exercise could help with diabetes. Meds are the best for Graves. My mother goes to the gym and eats healthier then me yat she still has Graves. Your doctor knows best. Just know once the meds do their job you will feel like a new person.

My former wife had hot flashes really bad. She really did not have major medical issues other than a hysterectomy with 1 ovary left in.

For sleeping the only solution we were able to come up with is a ceiling fan turned on high ever night and changed the sheets to silk the bed cover to silk. Silk tends to breath better but still keeps a person warm. When a hot flash started she would simple throw off the silk cover and some times the topsheet. It is not a perfect solution by far. But silk rapidly dries and creates a cooling effect as it does. The downside to silk is that it is expensive. The best kinds will say Mulberry..

tj the problem is that thyroid disorders are also genetic, I understand that Graves is similar (just for Hyperthyroids) as Hashimoto is for Hypothyroids...

Basically it's an autoimmune disease, your own body produces antibodies, I'm eating seaweed and stuff like it's going out of fashion, iodine is not the problem, the problem is that if a thyroid doesn't work right it's not always an iodine problem, an iodine lack can cause it but some people just are inclined that way. It's closely linked to hormones, mainly gets women and the typical times it hits is puberty, pregnancy, menopause... Whenever you have hormonal changes, so that nixes the diet theory for most people.

I asked my mom what she did to help get some relief. She shai that cillo pillo thing, ice packs. She carried the ones you can break open are great to put in pockets and so on. She used to slip them in her shoes. Your feet and your head loose heat the fastest. My mom used to take a cold shower and then go to bed with her hair wet. I hope this helps.

I'm praying for menopause to hurry up and arrive and take care of my fibroid, but no hot flashes yet.

I'm definitely getting a duct-less split AC this spring though!

wow! That describes my "night sweats" to a TEE LafayetteLady! When it was 10 degrees here this year I would step outside and see everyone else wearing heavy coats and I am outside in a light coat and sweat pouring off of me. I step out of the shower and before I'm even dried off I'm already sweating.

This all started about a year ago and one doc just said it was in my head and laughed at me <WTF??????> and another said I am probably going through perimenopause but refused to test me.

It's a fucking pain in the ass and makes it nearly impossible for Master to even come near me. I think that bothers me more than the sweating.

I go into work and I have a small fan sitting at my desk. Everyone else is sitting around their cubicles with heaters and I have a fan on.

I would do absolutely anything to not go through this sweating at all hours and minutes of the day. I'm tired of taking 2-3 showers a day and constantly changing clothes.

I'm right there with you with the sweating! My sympathies and if you have any tips that are helping you, please share!!!

ETA: I've tried the Estrovin and Black Cohosh. Neither did anything at all.

It's worse at night because you don't wake up until you're dripping. When you're awake, you can hopefully strip off clothes when it starts. You need your bottom layer to be a wife beater or some such that barely covers anything. Then layer up to a heavy sweater. Start stripping off all the layers and once it's over and you start to feel cold again you then start putting things back on.

Keep bath sheets nearby so you can put them on the bed instead of having to change the sheets in the middle of the night.

It is 82F inside right now. I had to turn the fan on to cool off. I did laundry, leaf burning and moving logs and limbs today. I have been up since 2 this morning because of a hot flash and back pain (and then I help getting the damned tree off the shed). Usually I take 2 Tramadol (sorry FD about how it affects you) but when I finished getting the limbs, I had to take a Norco. I need a hiding place Monday when Mom comes home (she does not know I did these chores).

My pain management doctor is trying to get me on a diet similar to the Paleo diet. Mom lost 9 pounds, I have no idea how much I weigh. I am dealing with hypothyroidism as well, high cholesterol and high trigs. No grains yet I got a canister of oatmeal left to eat (we do not toss away opened food unless it is spoiled). I got a core ball and a stretch band so I am working on my obliques and back core muscles.

Damn it...I am still sweating!

I do realize that not everyone would be helped by increasing iodine etc, that's why I said "many" instead of "all".. but Dr Brownstein says that 70% have inadequate iodine intake.. that doesn't mean that everyone that tries his iodine therapy is successful just as anything in life, for some people that doesn't work either or only partially helps.. now you can call him a quack if you want.. each person has to make their own decisions on their health and what they will try and wont.. but personally I feel his opinion has merit for me.. but then I don't have diabetes, or anything seriously medically wrong.. I did go thru a period where I was dead tired all the time and I do believe it was due to not enough iodine..

There will always be doctors that will disagree on what is bad for you (Dr Brownstien & Dr Hyman disagree on soy, for instance).. so each person has to do their own research, listen to their doctor, get more doctor opinions if needed and make up their own mind, try different things until they find what actually works.. but you can go to 10 doctors and they can all tell you the very same thing and they might all be wrong, my ex-SIL went thru multiple doctors before she finally found a doctor that decided to test her for celiac disease..

"Dr. Brownstein feels iodine is the most misunderstood nutrient. He feels it is impossible to achieve your optimal health when there is iodine deficiency present. This book provides information on how iodine therapy can help:
•ADHD
•Autism
•Breast, Thyroid, Ovarian and Uterine Cancer
•Detoxification
•Fatigue
•Fibrocystic Breasts
•Graves' Disease
•Hashimoto's Disease
•Hypothyroidism
•Improve the Immune System
