It's funny how nobody seems to be talking about money straight on. Let's try and have a look at the matter, shall we ?

How much does it cost to be a sucessful Dom ? And how much does it cost to be a sucessfull Master ?

For convenience, I'll arbitrary presume question 1 implies casual play, maybe ocasional overnights/over weekend stay overs, whereas question 2 implies a 24/7 situation. Sure, D/s can be 24/7, but that's not what I'm getting at.

Now, a decent Dom probably doesn't need as much practice as a decent Master. But still, my guess would be 10 or so hours a week dedicated to study and practice, over one year. For a Master, probably the same 10-12 hours a week, over the course of two or three years. And a Master needs alot more practice than a Dom, who can probably do pretty well on equal halves of reading and doing.

That comes to, at 10$ an hour, an opportunity cost of about $5,000 to be a decent Dom, and probably 10-20k to be a decent Master, just for the time you spend on your education. Add to that whatever you pay for books, teachers, play sessions, etc, and the sum may well double or triple.

Then, there's the gear. Again, a Dom gets off easier than a Master, but still, floggers, rope, suspension devices, dildo's, vibrators, new sheets, fetish dress, various and sundry contraptions, you probably go anywhere from 1k for a really scrawny set to the 100k and over people with many years behind them have accumulated.

Then, there's the question of the slave him or herself. A Dom could reasonably work things out so that the submissive pays her own bills, although there is plenty of slippage going on as a rule. But a Master usually will cover the slave's expenses, and if s/he is crafty, maybe can make something, but that doesn't happen all that often.

So, as a bottom line, if you want to be a Dom, think about it as a one year supplemental degree. If you'd rather spend the time and money to get a MBA and a raise for it, may well be this isn't for you. And if you want to be a Master, think college. Plus, for all practical purposes, one invalid person you will take care of the rest of your life.

Looking at things this way may help alot of people who are just confused clarify their goals, and maybe even avoid the very frustrated threads we've seen lately.

One could also ask "How much is it worth to You to be a decent Dominant/Master to be able to attain a submissive/slave that is worth more than all the money and time that would be invested?" That helps to differenciate between Someone Who is a serious lifestyler. i know that my Master is always reading, looking, and learning. As i am. Otherwise Y/you become stagnant. It helps the relationship and play to keep growing . The surprises are always wonderful whether it comes from Master or me.

Okay. your post really made me laugh.

but in all seriousness.....

i spend quite a bit of money keeping myself up. laser hair removal, manicures, pedicures, facials, the gym to stay in shape, outfits that are sexy, etc etc.

and i do expect that i should "pay for myself." i live in los angeles. try buying a house here and you'll see teardowns for just under a million.

the next 24/7 i enter into, i would expect my Master to appreciate my "skill" to earn a successful living just as important as my cooking, cleaning and sexual skills (okay, well maybe not QUITE as important as my sexual skills, but you get my gist).

maybe it's different in other areas of the country where the housing market isn't completely insane. or if the dom has a few spare million he doesn't mind pouring into the relationship. but to me, a huge part of "serving" is helping the bottom line of the household.

he is basically saying that men need to plan to make a heck of a lot of money to be good Masters to be able to afford their female slaves, who in most cases will have no income and will live, due to the Master, quite possibly a cushy lifestyle.

I had wondered about you but with this post, you have removed all doubt.

I have done better scenes than most people could ever imagine of doing and I did them by taking a key off of my keychain. That scene took place in a multi-million dollar home (edited to add, someone ELSE's home) in a driveway full of fancy cars (I rode motorcycles at the time).

I am sure the only thing she remembers is the key and the sound of my voice.

Pissdoll, (Great name by the way!) yes it's insane for housing out there in Calif!
I moved here to Myrtle Beach, SC from New Hampshire two years ago to get away from the severe winters and the high cost of housing up North. It's nowhere near as bad as Calif though!
You can get a 2000 sq. ft, 3 b/r, 2 full bath house here with a big 2 car garage for $179k and up.
The same thing in the N.E. would go for $400-$700k and I can only imagine what it would be in Calif!
I bought two condos here when I first moved down @ pre-construction prices of $84 & $97k. They've more than doubled in value.
Of course housing is a cost you have to factor into the lifestyle just as in anything else.
Then of course there is all the bondage gear which when you add up can be considerable! A set of fitted black leather sheets can go for $400-$600.
I have a nice pension from Uncle Sam so I'm in good shape financially. I never figured that I'd be making more than a lot of people with college degrees but I do. So much for that "Global Economy" eh college grads?
Pissdoll, we have people from Calif now moving here after selling their houses in Calif.
How do people afford houses out there?

Um..... i do not know where you have been hanging out but i know possibly a hundred subs/slaves in real time not online and out of all of them i know very few who are unemployed. Some of them make more than their owners; some of their owners make more than them. This is no different than any vanilla relationship.

In my previous collar i made about 3 times the money my owner did. I worked 2 jobs, owned a farm and had a good head for saving.

In my current collar it is true i do not work outside of the home. I am well cared for, in a lot of ways i am extremely spoiled.

But i do take care of the house, my owners, the cooking, the yard work, and the motorcycles.

Plus a lot of other things; this week i wired the garage so the inspector could give us the ok on the building for hookup to the electric company, i hung curtains, cooked for a large 4th party, sanded down the motor on Master's dresser so i could repaint it, started polishing out the derby cover, helped with body repairs on the camper, i could go on.

I find what the OP is implying about subs/slaves quite insulting.

Gee, I haven't been getting any lately, I wonder what I could do? I mean I have shitloads of money and actually know enough to get my jacket sleeves tailored to the right length, I mean that should be enough to get me elbow deep in pussy and I can't think of ANY other reason they would be blowing me off.

SO, what should I do? Oh I know, perhaps I will write a post that discreetly but transparently enough that the sluts will see I have money and spend it on the little whores. Yeah, that should get some more notches on the little guy. I will mask it in some insipid post about how poor other guys are and that should mask it enough for the whole charade to work.

my goals have no significant monetary value for any spent is worth it..while a considerable amount of time is geared towards improving myself and the life of my pet....i'm neither rich nor am i poor, i use my imagination and skills learned thru trial and error over the years...while i spend money for new toys i also spend the money for the materials to make/build my own from floggers to furniture...
