I was watching this last night and Mom is going "Is this what you go through?"

Every damn time I go off of my pills...last time was over 5 years ago when I had a PTSD attack at the same time.

I have lost my creativity unless you count my crocheting. I modify patterns to suit babies, grown ups, clothing...

I miss the sex though.

I used to volunteer at a clinic that worked with bi polar adults. Beyond having the period from going off meds to the out of control manic spiral being incredibly short it seemed reasonably accurate (although I do doubt how a repeatedly noncompliant person ever got a medical degree and license). Beyond the suicide ideation at the very end it did mostly gloss over the depressive part of the cycle which in the people I worked with was just as likely, if not more so, to be damaging as the manic phase just not as memorable or "fun."

I've always wondered if the drugs do damp down the brain or if the manic phase is addictive and convinces those with the illness that that is the true baseline. The people I worked with often complained about being fuzzy on the meds (mostly lithium) but most of them worked and kept a reasonably normal life going.

I know a pediatric neurologist with severe ADHD. He took the meds when in school but doesn't use them anymore. However he sure isn't secretive about it. In fact, it's how he connects with his patients by sharing his story. He is the role model for them. And although his specialty is pediatrics, one third of his patients are the adult parents who see their kids succeeding and realize that they too need help.

In AA they say that you're only as sick as your secrets. So I'm having trouble with the idea that someone who is helping others cope and not be ashamed of their illness was secretly ashamed and not open.

My daughter won't go off her pills, she cycled every five minutes before finding the right combo. In 13 years, she's not needed to be readmitted to a psych ward. Now, if she'd stop changing grad school majors every year and figure out what she wants to do, then I'd be happy.

I am bipolar, and the portrayal is absolutely nothing like what i go through off meds. But i realize all reactions are different.

Des, I am going through the same thing with Lizard. The college wants her to get tested because she can't seem to keep her mind on her schoolwork and she keeps changing her major (first Drama, then Crime Justice, Music and now English or Liberal Arts). If we get her LD pinpointed, the college will get her the help she needs. She is terrible at math (we figured dyscalculia(?) and the college refused to readmitted her until the testing is done.

Put 5 coins on a surface. If she can't count them at a glance she might have dyscalculia, that really is one of the diagnostics. She still needs testing but that is a quick test to give you an idea. I should also point out that a lot of young women have been taught to be terrible at math by the schools and society. If testing shows no actual problem she might consider getting hold of Danica McKellar's books, while aimed at a younger audience they do teach math and do it from a woman's POV.

But I'm not sure that changing majors qualifies as a LD. I've known lots of people who changed majors several times. Do they have some other reason beyond that?

She got Ds and dropped half of her classes because she said she could not understand...she is great with Music and Latin though. I pulled her out of HS because the teachers were bullying her about the way she could not do the work (I think it was Common Core) and she was able to get a diploma through an online high school with no trouble (Bs in 3 courses and a C in math). The only As she got in HS was in Music and Latin. She also has a mood disorder so she gets triggered real easy. She loves Shakespeare and I was going to give her my book of his works but her BF beat me to it...LOL! Now I got 2 copies...the hardback one and the one on my Kindle. We use my HB one for crossword puzzles. I am bad at math as well...I have to use the computer to balance my checkbook and accounts.

I use a calculator to do arithmetic as well and I have a degree in math. It's just faster and more accurate.

It's not conclusive but musical ability, especially the ability to compose music, is associated with mathematical ability. Get her tested but do not be surprised if it is simply that she has been taught "girls are bad at math so you will be bad at math." Unfortunately that is quite common.

Her problem may be that she doesn't learn well in the classic classroom setting. She might do better in a program that is more independent study or done online.

When she gets a hold of me, I will chat with her about it. She was suppose to go back to the institute yesterday and I got some news about her roses (Mom plants roses for all the grandkids).
