tj444 talked about convictions rather than incarceration, K. Presumably only a percentage of people get put behind bars as a result of their convictions, as is the case this side of the pond too. But even so, that's still a surprising figure.

My point exactly, and your sharp mind caught it, despite what they say about the English.

K.

God knows where this was said - I've never bothered to look it up - but, in the USA, the moment a British accent is heard the (American) hearer adjusts his estimate of the speaker's IQ upwards by an average of 6%. Silliness is rife worldwide.

That's only because they figure you must be doing pretty well for yourself if you can afford a jaunt to the colonies.

Its probably a good idea for criminals or mischievous teenagers to make sure no one is home, when they decide to break an entry, especially in the middle of the night. Owners tend to get a little edgy, when its dark, they don't know their intent and a stranger has invaded their home./property. Approximately 37% of homes in the USA own a firearm, and those are the ones on record. Some people are a little edgier then others when it comes to protecting their family/home. Kill/or be killed mentality, a place of fear and not taking any chances.
Its very easy to make judgments when one is not in the position. The average Joe has no desire to kill another human being, for one they have to live with it, and for another who would want to go through the court proceedings and hate?

would the same rules apply to a white guy walking into a black guys garage for similar reasons ? The black guy would be all in the right and the white guy would be an idiot who was in dire need of killing ? With FOUR shots from a shotgun no less ???? Where did that fool think he was On point in the jungle ?................yeah, I guess so. It IS a jungle out there.

I don't own a gun. But if someone comes into my home at night - considering the sorry state of gangbangers - without other knowledge, I'm killing the bastard, not wounding him.

Too much risk of payback if you wound.
Too much risk of he said she said.

Killing the bastard resolves the question. You came into my house at night.
You petrified me and my family. I was within my rights to shoot you.
I did. End of story.

Thank god you aint got a family then. Cuz you would run a big risk of killing your kids when they are older with the shoot first and see what you are shooting at later routine.

It's really funny how the shocked and horrified keep needing to embellish the story to try and force those with an ounce of common sense to say they are shocked and horrified, too.

And it's this kind of stoopid idiotic mentality that has gotten the US a very bad name for guns.

You may be within your legal rights to kill the intruder; but is it a moral right also??
I would argue that it isn't.

Dont know what embellishments are made here, or that anyone has shown an ounce of common sense in this vignette.

No.... It means you don't KILL the fucker as your first choice.
Just disable them and wait for the cops.

wait for the police seems logical if they are disabled but even a disable person can hurt you

Ja, I believe he understands, and will stipulate it is your property, but you still don't comprehend the gravamen of his statements in any wise.

Right. So you can't actually point out where I made that suggestion, can you.

It seems a little silly to me.

Sure, this is a story about an idiot with a gun, I agree with you there.

But it is also a story about an idiot who went into someone's garage, in a place where gun ownership is high, and the fear of violence also high.

I can tell you that if I knew someone was rooting around my garage at night while my kids slept in the adjoining house, I too would be working on the basis that they had left most of their civil rights at the boundary of my property. No, I wouldn't fire blindly, and recklessly, into the garage.. but then in the UK, my fear that a burglar might have a firearm is pretty low.

Even in the UK, where we are all terribly anti gun... If the guy could demonstrate that he believed was in imminent fear of his life, his actions would be justified.

He doesn't have to not be a complete idiot. .. He just has to believe his life, or that of his family, was threatened.
