but you changed the question. your point is not hers. my response was to hers.

But your answer was bullshit, regardless of who it was directed to.

Clever argument. Did it take you long to reason through it?

If it wasn't desertion the first 2 times then why is it now?

Because our military can't afford to get serious about cleaning house just yet, Angelika. Just as 20% of our recruits can't meet the criteria for enlistment without some kind of a waiver, a lot of the troops who are in really shouldn't be.

Earlier in the thread, I related an incident from my time in uniform when a serious court martial offense was overlooked for the good of the service, but let me share the flip-side as well. Out of 5 guys who came into that shop over a few months, fresh from basic and tech school, 2 were thrown out of the military within the first 2 years. One for drunk driving and the other after an off-duty fight with a local national. In the next squadron, 20+ guys were up for court martial after a marijuana bust in the barracks, and getting 18 months of jail time and a bad conduct discharge. That was for the good of the service, too.

It isn't happening today. I hear drug testing isn't even being done in the zone of operations for soldiers. They use them up, before dropping the hammer, and taking away the benefits. We wait until they aren't deployable anymore to kick them out.

Why wasn't Bergdahl busted on an earlier incident? Why'd they take him after he washed out of one boot camp? Because they needed a physically fit body to carry a rifle, and maybe get maimed or killed, and he was still good enough to do that.

This time next week, I'll be drinking around a campfire with a couple career Army officers, and I'll be interested to hear what they bitch about.

I think that is what a good defense attorney will use against the Army in a full general court if they bring desertion charges which is just one reason I really doubt they will. I'm increasingly thinking he'll get a medical discharge due to some mental condition and avoid the disciplinary system altogether.

Thank you for taking the time for a reply.

My question was actually directed at one specific poster, because to me the answer you gave seemed kind of obvious.

In case anyone hasn't read it, Rolling Stone covered Bergdahl a few years ago.
