I get what you mean -- namely that riots are a part of humanity and civil society -- part of the human make-up when emotions boil over, anger needs an outlet, and civil institutions are lacking.

Yes. What people will or won't do, rather than should or should not do, in short.

kdsub -> RE: Rioting is the answer (8/13/2014 1:39:39 PM)

Yes humans can be assholes... yes they riot for no good reason... yes when they loot they are thieves...So... should we close our eyes or call it what it is.. uncivilized behavior that deserves incarceration? Just step back from your "I understand everything world"... what if it was your business that you sank your life savings into that was being looting... for WHAT? Would you be so philosophical then...are mad as hell?

Otherwise what the heck is your point?

The great white fear in America is "that those black people are out of control." In the 60s in led to a massive white flight from the cities.

It wasn't so much a fear that blacks were out of control but the increase in crime and deteriorating property values to go along with it.

To me a riot is a sign that something basic inside the mind of the rioter is not working and they seem to think that looting and burning is an answer to anything. Now you and cloudboy can keep blaming society for this but until you actually put the blame on the ones who are actually doing the violence you are more a part of the problem than a solution to it.

Is it really that difficult for you, THB? Once again, for me, the 'blame' or 'excuse' game is irrelevant *in its entirety*, because I think it's pointless. That applies to your side of the argument but what you wrongly consider to be my side, too. Seriously, what do you expect could be achieved by it?

Achieved by what? If you mean rioting, nothing is achieved except more violence. If you mean trying to find out why people are so violent, it would be to try and stop it. If you mean pointing out that the boy has his head in the clouds and needs to stop defending violence and come back to the real world, probably nothing but sometimes it's fun to poke him.

No, I meant, what do think will be achieved by the great 'blame' argument. Supposing you were to 'win' and everybody on this board - everybody in the country - were to be convinced that the rioters themselves were to be blamed for lacking in moral fibre (or however you want to put it). Do you think that they, or others in the future, would take the blindest bit of notice? It's idealistic nonsense.

Does this mean that since condemnation will not stop them they should not be condemned?

Here blacks are fleeing the cities as fast as whites.

George Bush I ran the famous Willie Horton political ad to scare white voters away from Dukakis in the Presidental race of 88 -- and the ad was very effective. Such political tactics, though, mean the GOP forfeits the black vote. (Before that was Nixon's "Southern Strategy.")

That's funny, I thought it was to scare everyone away from Dukakis. If it would have been a white guy who was furlowed who killed and raped, I'm sure they would have used him. The only point was making Dukaka look soft on crime.

Why isn't the liberal media reporting this mass exodus from Alabama? I read one report where three teenagers were missing near montgomery after fleeing a police raid of their kegger.........but again, liberal media...perhaps you have conservative video footage of this astounding event?

Yet your country is the result of rioters. How two faced can you get?

Do you have any validation for your ignorant unsubstantiated opinion ?

I think even you may have heard of the boston tea party. Remember where the rioters disguised themselves as native americans and destroyed the private property of others.

I do recall but I also recall it was a well planed operation. It was not a riot. Try again.

Never mind their woodworking skills. Most terrorist attacks are planned events.

And Horton was used in the primaries by Al Gore, the Bush campaign just continued the attack.

He was not. You will not find one credible citation of that. Gore attacked him for the furlough program, but never mentioned Horton. That was Read My Lips all the way.

It was the contest of two inept people, and the inept one won.

Coming from the OP, it's a compliment. It puts me in the company of folks like SimplyMichael, who I loved to read.

The whole premise of the OP is simply stupid (and a racial swipe, too.) 40 people were arrested for the rioting and misbehavior. If you want to eliminate rioting you have to ask, "Why are people rioting." It does not happen in a vacuum.

The OP doesn't want to ask that question. And, as I noted before, he didn't lead with the shooting of an unarmed, black teenager -- as his focus of concern. (Why is that, I wonder?)

While business and property owners can file insurance claims -- and be restored -- the mother and father of Michael Brown can never get him back.

'Our family didn't ask for this': Relatives of unarmed black teen shot dead by police condemn St Louis riot claiming violence is 'not what Mike would want'

• Michael Brown, 18, was shot dead in street by police officers near St Louis
• Vigil was held in honor of the teen but quickly descended into chaos
• Angry crowds then gathered at police headquarters to protest his death
Started chanting 'we want answers' and 'no justice, no peace'
• Looters among the thousands of protestors smashed store front windows
• They also pilfered goods as others smashed windows of parked cars
• At least 32 people were arrested
• Police explained that victim was killed after getting into an altercation
• Witnesses say Brown was unarmed with his hands in the air when shot

See the incident I recounted at the start of this thread.
Lets wait for all the facts.

The point is to zero in on the causes of the riot and try to solve them, in order to stop them happening in the future. That is, be realistic about it all. I'm not the one being "philosophical" and "idealistic" here, Butch. You need to be addressing your comments to those who philosophise about how people *should* behave, in an 'ideal' world.

Me, after various riots here in England over the past decades, I got really bloody tired of our MPs furiously 'condemning' them. I've always thought, 'Who cares that they've condemned them?' I didn't have any business that was smashed up, but I *did* have a father, in the police at the times of some of the worst riots, coming home traumatised. Relations between the police and ethnic minorities in some of the areas in question were beyond piss poor. It was only after major, deep and lengthy investigations into these riots that some solutions were finally sorted out.

Had you ever used the pages of a history book for something besides shit paper you might not think the American revolution started out as a riot. Perhaps it is time you got a phoquing clue?

The Boston Harbor is not in my zip code.

Nor does it appear any history books.

kdsub -> RE: Rioting is the answer (8/13/2014 5:06:24 PM)

Protesting is one thing ... people rioting and looting is another... Those that protest want answers and will get it... Those that loot want to steal period.

Butch
