Zonie63 -> Problems with White House Security (9/24/2014 7:18:42 AM)

An interesting follow up story regarding last weekend's security breaches.

quote:

A few yards farther on, the intruder, Omar Jose Gonzalez, reached the White House door. A guard was supposed to be posted directly in front, but no one was blocking the door at that moment.

Those new details help explain how the Secret Service’s plan for guarding the White House — which envisioned five different rings of protection between the public sidewalk and the president’s front door — failed so completely.

A plainclothes surveillance team was on duty that night outside the fence, meant to spot jumpers and give early warning before they made it over. When that team didn’t notice Gonzalez, there was an officer in a guard booth on the North Lawn. When that officer couldn’t stop him, there was supposed to be an attack dog, a SWAT team and a guard at the front door — all at the ready.

But the attack dog wasn’t released.

The SWAT team, which didn’t react in time, was trailing Gonzalez as he dove through some bushes ringing the White House’s front entrance.

And when Gonzalez reached the door, he found his path clear and the door unlocked.

“One after another unit failed,” said a former high-ranking Secret Service official who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe White House security protocols. “This guy has now crossed 70-some yards of restricted area. If he has [an explosive] device on him and he gets in, he controls the White House. He could have anything on him.”

Inside, Gonzalez was subdued by a plainclothes agent — the sixth ring of security that night. That agent’s job is to patrol a place that intruders are never supposed to reach: the interior of the executive mansion.

Now, they have these temporary metal barriers which look like bicycle racks.

I suppose they could just build a taller fence with barbed wire on it.

Party crashers and now this guy. I don't understand why people don't take their jobs seriously. It doesn't matter if nothing has happened since the party crashers. Hell, it doesn't matter if there hasn't ever been any incidents before, there are reasons security is put in place.

I hope there is accountability.

I heard an interview where that's exactly what any SS agent would want -- 15' fence topped with barbed wire. But the White House is a symbol, so there's resistance to that kind of visual security.

Aylee -> RE: Problems with White House Security (9/24/2014 9:08:15 AM)

Hasn't the issues with the Secret Service been going back at least 12 years. I recall that there were some questionable things in 2002 (racism, whistle blowing, money, assignments). And there was the prostitution thing a couple of years ago as well as the van of equipment that was stolen (I think just the equipment was stolen) and the parties at Martha's Vineyard that did damage.

Something is rotten in the state of Denmark.

mnottertail -> RE: Problems with White House Security (9/24/2014 9:13:13 AM)

It goes back even further than that. Most of the detail guarding Kennedy in Dallas were still drunk from an all night party.

Maybe some tripple concertina and double apron with a company of mud marines dug in between the two[:D]

The White House cannot be secured as long as it remains in downtown DC and isn't turned into a fortress of the kind Americans would find unacceptable. A taller fence might result in fewer breaches but people would still try and some would get over or through. People want to get close enough to take pictures so it has to be accessible to the public which means cranks with guns will take potshots at it on occasion. To keep disgruntled army privates from flying choppers into DC and landing on the lawn, that really happened in 1974, would require anti aircraft batteries on the roof.

Maybe we should get rid of the Secret Service and contract Blackwater for security. [:D]

The incident that sticks out most in my mind was the episode where the Presidential Limo high-centered, and was stuck in the driveway of an embassy overseas, with the President aboard. I'd have thought there would be an adjustable ride height on the vehicle, but cars scraping when exiting the underground garage was a known factor, and the lack of a dry run on that exit seems really negligent to me. The Secret Service does not have the luxury of saying "oops."

Hey gang, I suspect you're being a bit harsh here. Keep in mind that Nothing works well in DC any more. Why should the Secret Service be exempt from the malaise?

Yeah, less "Starbucks salutes" would be an improvement at this point.[sm=coffee.gif]

Anyone jumping that fence should be shot. End of story. I'm no Obama supporter but when someone is able to make it to the front door, something is wrong.

This is still korporate amerika so that won't float.

Had you a clue about amerikan history you would know that it was common for ordinary citizens to visit the white house and talk to the president until farily recently.

Why is the black guys salute a problem for you.
I believe he is the president and the commander and chief of all of the armed forces of the u.s. Would it not be his perogative to salute as he chooses? I have seen dubya try to salute and he actually claims to have been in the military.

Abductyounow -> RE: Problems with White House Security (9/26/2014 12:52:35 PM)

For me it is not a matter of color it is a matter of pride. I feel you on the color thing don't get me wrong. I feel a lot of unnecessary criticism has been aimed at our opresident by SOME because of his race. However, when it comes to the salute, because he is the commander and chief, he, and dubya ought to have enough pride to get it right. What happened to leading by example? As for the Whitehouse security issues, hardly anyone these days wants to do their job properly. Poor service is prevalent in many areas in our economy. People seem to think they are entitled to a paycheck no matter how shabby their work is. Check out the attitude you get from a lot of store 'associates'. How many times have you walk into an establishment and saw the person who is supposed to assist you, talking on the telephone and either ignore you or wait on you with indifference? Is it any wonder that this attitude of minimalism is so pervasive that it reaches all the way to the elite services of law enforcement? Very scary prospect. We do not need terrorists or communists, many of us are destroying the country just fine without any help. We need a return to personal responsibility. Our ancestors, black, white, red, brown, and yellow, all took pride in what they did. They faced the harshest adversities, now people are looking for the easy ride. God help us.

Eisenhower and grant had the same problem with their salutes.

What do you expect when you pay someone minimum wage?

It would appear that you also do not wish to be responsible since by your own admission you need your imaginary friend for help instead of depending on your own ethical compass.

I have worked for minimum wage before and my outlook was as follows - I knew what the job paid when I accepted it. I agreed to take the job, so therefore I will be a man of my word and do the job.

"It would appear that you also do not wish to be responsible since by your own admission you need your imaginary friend for help instead of depending on your own ethical compass."

I guess you were never taught to respect the views and beliefs of others. You know nothing about me or what my ethics are. I would invite you to refrain from personal attacks and to discuss and debate with intelligence. Or is it customary to attack ideas that are different than yours?

mnottertail -> RE: Problems with White House Security (9/26/2014 1:37:47 PM)

Fuck that stupid fuckin salute. That stupid shit was started by St. Wrinklemeat. For what reason I dont know.

Prior to that, no president, including and especially IKE; ever saluted.

And the ones since, with the exception of the elder bush, who wasnt too bad, and Jimmy who was a lifer, none of the presidents since have been in the real military, not Reagan who was a piss poor saluter, and made films or some shit in the war, not W who was awol, who there is at least one picture of him saluting with his dog, not clinton who went to canada, and not Obama who was not in the draft.

Further, they are not given the classes, the history, the propers, and all that rot, so they do it like john wayne in the movies or something else they have seen.

Even further, I have had to salute a whole latrine full of officers who otherwise could kiss the bloody end of my fuckstick.

It is a meaningless much ado about nothing, we got some real problems we gotta face, and we are fucking around in this fucking swill.

Abductyounow -> RE: Problems with White House Security (9/26/2014 2:05:43 PM)

Well it is obvious that you have issues with the salute. Point taken. I still assert if you are going to do something do it right. If you take the job, know the ins and outs. I am actually a supporter of our President - for the most part - but I stick to my guns. If I tell you I am going to take a job, I am going to do everything in my power to get all aspects of that job right. But you are right in one aspect - despite you obvious anger - the salute in the scheme of things is not that important.
