I believe the kids growing up today are the most vulnerable - no real guidance, and no fear. Unless parents are hammering into their kids' heads not to take nude pictures of themselves and offer themselves up to strangers, thinking that no harm can come to them because they're behind a screen - and hammering this into their kids' heads regularly - then that internet safety course that they took in 8th grade for 20 minutes when the local police came to the class will be long forgotten. I remember how immortal I felt at 18 years old. If I had the internet, I am certain I would have put my immortality to the test.

I respectfully disagree for a handful of reasons I don't really care to get into, because I don't think you'll change your mind on this. I don't think any generation is anymore stupid or hopeless than the other, every generation has the same capacity for idiocy and education. Its just the variables that change, thus the experiences are different- but really has any generation been without those challenges? I think implying that these 18 year olds today are more hopeless than the ones 10 years ago- is insulting. I do feel 18 year olds grew up with computers- and not unlike growing up hearing a foreign language all the time- are more apt to be adept and aware of the risks of interacting with strangers online because they DID have at least one or two internet safety courses vs. the zero their parents had.

Oh, I completely agree that no one generation is any more hopeless than another and that only the variables change. (If you knew me in other arenas, I am often the one arguing that very point.) But yes, you're correct that I don't imagine I'll change my thinking that the internet is a much more dangerous variable than what I faced in my youth.

I guess my point of view is this... I don't know anyone my age who would do what these two ladies I know did...they are both in their late 50's. Lady one: She is engaged to someone she met once, in France, last year. She met him online. She tattoo'd his name on her ass BEFORE she even met him. She has a ring, but he still lives in France. He is attractive, younger, not originally from France (he says he is from South Africa...). She still thinks he will eventually move here if she saves enough money to help him with it. No matter what anyone says to her. lady two: she has now three times, flown cross country to meet three different men, on her time & dime. All three times it didn't work out. Fortunately for her, being in a strange city with no one she knew didn't have more catastrophic results. I'm not saying it isn't going to work out for lady 1 or 2. Those are just risks I would not take because...to me...those are dangerous situations. I'm not saying those are problems 18 year olds are immune to, just I think that occurs throughout the spectrum and internet safety is something I think some folks should take some responsibility to learn, no matter the age. I think it is a variable that is dangerous to ALL folks who choose to engage in it. To assume an 18 is more or less safe than those two ladies I mentioned- is in my opinion, a poor assumption. I guess. I see your view, I just don't think its a reality that a younger generation is more at risk for bad shit happening to them because of the internet than someone of an older generation.

You are totally right. you hear way too many idiotic stories about older men and women falling for crap. Being delusional is not confined to a specific age.

It's not about being delusional or not. It's about helping an adolescent learn how to make wise choices on the internet so that when they turn 18 (not that that's a magic number for maturity but I guess legally it is) they have the skills to navigate the online world safely. Parents always tell their kids to drive safely, to be careful, to eat right. A parent should also be consistently diligent about teaching the child the skills to keep information safe and private on the internet, from the moment they touch a computer. But too many parents (perhaps those are the delusional ones) don't know the dangers themselves enough to teach their kids. So kids grow up without that reinforcement and training. Don't get in a stranger's car. Don't do drugs. Don't drive with someone who's intoxicated. If nobody ever tells you that doing drugs is wrong, how will you ever know? Well, if parents don't teach their kids that internet safety is just as important as not doing drugs or riding with strangers, then that child grows into an adult (an 18 year old) without the benefit of being taught during their upbringing and so has to come upon it somehow on their own or, unfortunately, learn by experience. Being delusional is not confined to a certain age, of course. Having a birthday and suddenly being thrust at the world as an "adult" on the internet without the benefit of having been taught to have a healthy fear of it to balance out their newly found freedom is.

At 18 years old most people are bullet proof, immortal, hormonally motivated . . . and deaf. You are correct that no generation can yet be declared as having cornered the market on stupid. Each one has contributed its own respective share of dumb to the collective and each succeeding one will continue to do the same. But I also believe that the overall intelligence of each generation continues to grow as well. As for the two examples you cited: Lady 1: The lady is living in a fantasy world of her own creation. That world will eventually crash, but this type of event is neither new nor unique to any specific generation. Lady 2: Best spin I can put on this one is, the lady is obviously a slow learner (also a cross-generational attribute).
