That's why I'm posting. I know that they are from the US, I'm trying to show them what a good thing programs like this one and the one I mentioned are a GOOD thing. Still far as I can see the US system has come a long way and I see "Obamacare" as a good first step in the right direction.

They think all govts are as controlling as the US govt is.. They wont see it as you and I do unless they move out of the US and actually experience the difference of living in a different country for themselves..

You may get the impression that the US system has come a long way but really, the lobbyists, Big Pharma, the greedy and HMOs, etc have just found a different way to milk patients, taxpayers and the system..

Assuming you are correct, it is that controlling U S government we are dealing with here not the perfect, compassionate Canadian government.
To paraphrase Carlos Mensia if Canada was so perfect why did you leave?

I never said it was perfect, its just a fuck of a lot better than this country.. I am not staying here, I am here just temporarily.. believe me, I cant wait to leave.. once I do I never want to come back.. The poor will continue to get poorer and the rich will get richer and there is not much American voters can do about that or their corrupt politicians.. This country is on a downward slide and that will continue to happen slowly over time and eventually the US will no longer be a "superpower" and the US dollar will no longer be the reserve currency..

"GPs will be asked to identify patients who are putting on weight under a new national programme to help fight obesity."
Identify. And then follow up with their patients.
The government isn't going to do anything about it except ask doctors to do it, and presumably pass on the data (which need not contain names, just numbers).

If they government isn't going to do anything about it, why do they need the data?
How would a GP "identify" a patient that has gained weight without names and numbers? Does the government think that GP's don't know how to do their jobs in advising their patients to reduce weight and to screen for diabetes?!?

Pre-diabetes. Preventative care for likely folks before they contract diabetes.
Clearly, the government is willing to pay for this preventative care.
Seems like a good idea to me. I can't help the phobias of those who can't grasp this.

You can't grasp why people don't want government involved in it. Once again, it's not so much about the "what" (preventive care) as it is about the "how" (government).

Preventive care is, without a doubt, a great idea. Do Dr.'s not agree? If they do agree, don't you think they're already doing this stuff (besides the identifying)?

Well then, there's no problem.

Glad to hear it.

Aylee how can you not see that identifying patients who are at risk of developing diabetes (for example) and helping to prevent it by encouraging a healthy lifestyle as bad. It's called preventative medicine and it's a good thing.
When it's between doctor and patient, I agree. Not when it is the government who is now doing the advising.

Oh FFS......... NHS agenda is set by the Government who are voted in by the people...... Dont you understand how democracy works ?

Oh FFS...don't you understand that not everyone wants the government in their business o
OR that in a democracy, the government has no presumption of the right to involve themselves in private health issues?

What a clown.

See...that's why we vote. Not everyone gets their way in everything. It's called being a grown-up, as well as democracy.

Having no government to have a say is called anarchy, and it's an extreme left position.

Or used to be, until the modern band of the clueless decided it was "conservative."

Tell that to someone who couldnt afford Before the ACA to go and get their diabetes and health issues worked out.
Tell the people that cant afford to see a nutritionist, get blood work done, or afford their insulin/or ischaemia medications, or gets gangrene in a limb due to their diabetes not being addressed.
Weird how so many democracies HAVE government healthcare as a human right. Insurance companies are way to lax on the human compassion part of the process.
Its so much more effective to let people die instead of caring for them, so much cheaper.

Actually, it's cheaper to care for them before they get sick. Afterward is costly.

No need for me to try and make you like stupid. I will just let you keep posting which will remove all doubt.

Your points about governments and democracy clearly show you dont have a clue about either.

Need I point out where you went wrong ?.......... Oh fuck it, you went wrong by ignoring facts and posting bullshit. (Hope this helps @ smileyface.com)

Good grief, really?

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/health/healthnews/11295265/Doctors-told-to-report-patients-who-put-on-weight.html

quote:

Under the scheme, family doctors will be asked to identify anyone who has gained weight and is at risk of diabetes – particularly those aged below 40.

They will then be offered tests for pre-diabetes, followed by healthy lifestyle advice and close monitoring to ensure they are eating better and exercising more.

Two plus two makes five, now?

I think I have read about this sort of close monitoring before:

quote:

'Smith!' screamed the shrewish voice from the telescreen. '6079 Smith W.! Yes, you! Bend lower, please! You can do better than that. You're not trying. Lower, please! That's better, comrade. Now stand at ease, the whole squad, and watch me.'

A sudden hot sweat had broken out all over Winston's body. His face remained completely inscrutable. Never show dismay! Never show resentment! A single flicker of the eyes could give you away. He stood watching while the instructress raised her arms above her head and — one could not say gracefully, but with remarkable neatness and efficiency — bent over and tucked the first joint of her fingers under her toes.

'There, comrades! That's how I want to see you doing it. Watch me again. I'm thirty-nine and I've had four children. Now look.' She bent over again. 'You see my knees aren't bent. You can all do it if you want to,' she added as she straightened herself up. 'Anyone under forty-five is perfectly capable of touching his toes. We don't all have the privilege of fighting in the front line, but at least we can all keep fit. Remember our boys on the Malabar front! And the sailors in the Floating Fortresses! Just think what they have to put up with. Now try again. That's better, comrade, that's much better,' she added encouragingly as Winston, with a violent lunge, succeeded in touching his toes with knees unbent, for the first time in several years...

I am glad that for now I do not live in Airstrip One.

Let the stupidity continue Aylee.

Obesity is a big health problem, no point trying to tackle it at source eh, just wait until people die or become diabetic.

So, since you are in the UK can you tell us all how the "close monitoring to ensure they are eating better and exercising more," is going to work?

How does the government ENSURE healthy eating and exercising?

What costs? This is a British program. I thought that costs were already covered.

Seriously. . .? The great democracy of the UK just outlawed pay for porn with female ejaculation and face sitting. However, raping and drugging young girls is still A-Okay (if you are Muslim.)

Of course my concern here is still: How are they going to ensure compliance? I have yet to see an answer to that. Just poo-pooing the question.

How does ANYONE ensure compliance? Even doctors can't do that, all they can do is inform their patients and hope they do as their doctor suggests. The idea that doctors are somehow more capable of getting their patients to comply is ludicrous and naive at best.
