Well then, let's look at the course...and their descriptions...being offered today:

Doin' Time: A History of Black Incarceration
This course may also count for the major in Gender, Feminist Studies and Sexuality.
This course considers how a system of imprisoning Black men and women has been sustained from colonial times to the present. Beginning with Foucault's Discipline and Punish and Davis's Are Prisons Obsolete?, the course establishes a theoretical grounding upon which to understand early systems of surveillance and confinement. The course surveys institutions, justice systems, and incarcerated men's and women's crimes, punishments, and experiences negotiating what can arguably be termed 21st century re-enslavement. ENVS 10: Joy of Garbage
What happens to the things we don’t want? This class follows the path of our waste products as they are burnt, decomposed, landfilled, treated, recycled, reused, dumped on minority communities, or shipped abroad. Building on basic chemical and biological principles, and using the scientific method to guide us, this class explores the fates of organic and nonorganic detritus, and searches for sustainable solutions to waste problems. PHIL-180 PHILOSOPHY AND STAR TREK-FALL FOR 2014-2015
FACULTY:
WETZEL, LINDA
STAR TREK IS VERY PHILOSOPHICAL. WHAT BETTER WAY, THEN, TO DO PHILOSOPHY, BUT TO WATCH STAR TREK, READ PHILOSOPHY AND HASH IT ALL OUT IN CLASS (AND ON BLACKBOARD)? THAT’S THE PLAN. THIS COURSE WILL CENTER ON TOPICS IN METAPHYSICS THAT COME UP AGAIN AND AGAIN IN STAR TREK. IN CONJUNCTION WITH WATCHING STAR TREK, WE WILL READ EXCERPTS FROM THE WRITINGS OF GREAT PHILOSOPHERS, EXTRACT KEY CONCEPTS AND ARGUMENTS AND THEN ANALYZE THOSE ARGUMENTS. QUESTIONS WE WILL WRESTLE WITH INCLUDE:
I. IS TIME TRAVEL POSSIBLE? COULD YOU GO BACK AND KILL YOUR GRANDMOTHER? WHAT IS TIME?
II. WHAT IS THE RELATION BETWEEN YOUR MIND AND YOUR BRAIN--ARE THEY SEPARATE ITEMS OR IDENTICAL? CAN PERSONS SURVIVE DEATH? COULD A MACHINE SOMEDAY THINK? IS DATA A PERSON?
III. WHAT IS A PERSON? MUST YOU HAVE THE SAME BODY TO BE YOU? SAME MEMORIES? WHEN DO WE HAVE ONE PERSON, AND WHEN DO WE HAVE TWO (THINK OF THE EPISODES WHERE PEOPLE "SPLIT" OR "FUSE").
IV. DO YOU HAVE FREE WILL, OR ARE YOU DETERMINED BY THE LAWS OF NATURE TO DO EXACTLY WHAT YOU WIND UP DOING (WHILE BELIEVING YOU HAVE FREE WILL)? OR BOTH? WHAT IS FREEWILL?
TEXT: METAPHYSICS: CLASSIC AND CONTEMPORARY READINGS, 2ND ED., ED. BY HOY & OAKLANDER (WADSWORTH, 2005). THREE SHORT PAPERS, AND ONE PRESENTATION OR DEBATE.
CREDITS: 3
PREREQUISITES: ONE OF PHIL 010, 020, 098, OR 099.
(Georgetown University)

Hey now, those sound interesting.

Of course I wonder on the first if they are going to discuss the Quaker beginnings. Of course, the Scottsboro boys comes to mind with this.

For the second, I have a good friend that does environmental sciences, specifically with regard to landfills and this looks like a presentation thingie that he would take me to. LOL

The last. . . well, frankly we discussed all of those topics in my beginning philosophy class years ago. It does seem that they belong in an intro level class, but. . . STAR TREK!

I do believe that serious scholarship could be done on all three. I am a bit doubtful that it will happen, however.

I don't super-understand the Israel thing, but Israeli-Jewish influence on US foreign policy is huge and disproportionate. I think its political suicide to go against existing policies for any US elected official.

Maybe cloud boy... they believe in the policies....You and tweak both always miss the obvious. Yes many people... good people...responsible people... think differently than you. There is always the chance they are right.

You know what's funny and sad at the same time, Butch? The Jewish people in this country overwhelmingly support leftist, liberal causes while those same people always see the side of any enemy of Israel.

Sorry Lucy...I should have said majority but I did fall prey to one of polite's traits, didn't I? Perhaps you'd care to show me a few posts from the leftists or liberals on this board showing support for Israel?

You thought you made a mistake once, but you were wrong.

You didnt write all, or every, at all. You wrote 'overwhelmingly'

You are certainly correct when you observe that it's " political suicide to go against existing policies for any US elected official". The pro-Israel lobby's stranglehold over US policy is a major factor in causing the biased US policies in the Middle East. It is simply insane for any nation to put the interests of another nation above its own, yet US policy towards the ME routinely places Israeli interests at the top of the list and US interests in second place.

For the US to reverse this order, and to put its own interests first would be a giant step towards relieving tensions and achieving a lasting fair peace in the region.

actually no
polite is a tory(conservative) and knows the difference between, left, liberal, democrat and socialist, marxist, and commmunist.
now if you had named sanity as a prize example of using blanket bullshit on generalising, then I would have taken that comment seriously.
And find your own posts...you want to prove a point, YOU take the time to find all the lefties that hate israel.
You find your posters and I will find matching posters who pretend to be against "radicals" only, who want to deny religious freedoms to muslims.
I dont even need to find posts. But I will wait for your ....research.

in the rest of the world, well US and the western world
Religious freedom demands that corporations can deny health coverage, because its against their religious beliefs, and that was screamed about as being sacred, yet islamaphobics want to curtail more than just the extremists. And sounding like a nazi idealogues meeting and discussing anti semite propoganda for the final solution pogroms. Religious freedom, my arse, to these people, if it aint white christian or jewish, it isnt religion.

I remember the days when no Democrat worth their salt would oppose just about anything Israel did because they knew it would mean switching parties or it would be a career ender.

I grew up in New York City, where if a mayoral candidate didn't enjoy some major Jewish endorsements, they didn't get elected. That simple.

France saw its biggest demonstrations in history Sunday as millions turned out to show unity and defend freedom of expression. The current issue of Charlie Hebdo is scheduled for release tomorrow, January 14, with 3 million copies--up from 60,000 copies of the previous edition. The cover shows a drawing of Mohammad shedding a tear and holding an "Je suis Charlie" or "I am Charlie" sign. The caption reads "Tout est Pardonne" or "All is Forgiven." His turban and nose could possibly be construed as having a phallic appearance. Gerard Biard, editor in chief, clarified the drawing's message. "It is we who forgive, not Mohammad."

I think this might be the perfect response. It shows compassion and defiance.

He's erecting another straw man (which is what got him on my hide list, this time, in the first place).

It's sad, really and now I know why higher education is going to hell in this country; reading comprehension.

He has apparently consciously realized that his only hope for ever "winning" a debate on here (given his positions) is to drag the discussion down several levels through the use of such fallacies as said straw man above, and childish ad hominems etc

Mindless obfuscation, derails, and other such forms of trollishness

Back on topic though, despite his efforts, here is another example of how Islam is at its heart an utterly fascist ideology:

Snowmen are anti-Islamic, and forbidden

See, that would explain why I wrote it as a claim, not a quote. Reading comprehension.

NYC has a large Jewish community. They look for that support in their politicians.

They get to do that. It's how representation works.

Sorry that bothers you. But it's how things work.

Key difference - your crazy christian bastards dont control the whole nation, they dont even control their congregations or their families

Christians are free to shun the crazies among them in the West

Among Islamists though, you must submit to the crazies

(And they dont just talk about it, they really do kill gays by law)
