LittleGirlHeart -> I got impetigo after getting my lip waxed at a salon. (1/12/2015 2:01:19 AM)

Does this mean the salon was using dirty stuff, or is it a co incidence?

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: I got impetigo after getting my lip waxed at a salon. (1/12/2015 3:58:58 AM)

Impetigo is caused by two types of bacteria:

Staphylococcus aureus
Streptococcus pyogenes.

Both types of bacteria exist harmlessly on human skin. They cause infection when there is a cut or wound. Impetigo in adults is usually the result of injury to the skin - commonly by another skin condition, such as dermatitis (inflammation of the skin).

Or waxing, which leave pore-sized wounds...

True.

But the point I was making is that the bacteria live on the skin quite harmlessly in most cases and cause no harm at all - until you break or damage the skin.

I don't think LGH can blame the salon for it was my posit.

I was agreeing. Waxing, no matter who does it, damages the skin and leave micro-wounds where the hairs are ripped out at the root.

It's a coincidence LGH. There has to be a break in the skin for you to get impetigo. The good news is there are very effective treatments for impetigo so it's very treatable. The most common one used here involves very short exposures to IV rays and really works well. If you haven't been told about it ask about it.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: I got impetigo after getting my lip waxed at a salon. (1/12/2015 9:12:22 AM)

I can if they're using dirty wax or dirty tools. That's one of the ways of how you spread it. I have been getting waxed for years and never had anything nasty come from it.

Have you been seen by a dermatologist (skin doctor)? They really are the best option for treatment of impetigo. I'm saying this btw as someone who works in healthcare at a hospital not just randomly. I'm NOT a doctor but have picked things up along the way.

LittleGirlHeart -> RE: I got impetigo after getting my lip waxed at a salon. (1/12/2015 1:50:15 PM)

LiveSpark, no he just called me, I told him where it is, that it looks like extremely nasty pimples, with a yellowish center and crust, and it's only where I was waxed. And he said it sounds like impetigo.

I also looked it up before that, and I fit the description and pictures. But that's not always accurate I realize.

I never get sores or anything nasty after getting waxed, this is the first time. :/

LiveSpark -> RE: I got impetigo after getting my lip waxed at a salon. (1/12/2015 2:01:28 PM)

So a doctor has never even seen it? That's crazy! Noone can or should even try to diagnose over the phone. Get yourself to a doctor sweetie, you need to be seen so you can be diagnosed properly.

How could you pick up Keflex (a prescription antibiotic) without actually seeing a doctor or nurse practicioner?

I don't know if we're allowed to link to other forums here, so I'll just quote a post I found in a waxing related board responding to the same question you asked.

That you got an infection doesn't prove negligence. Remember that skin infections can and sometimes do occur after procedures performed under the most sterile conditions in medical practice. In the majority of cases, the source of the bacteria was the patient's own skin. Staph bacteria are evereywhere, including your skin, your nose, boyfriend's skin/nose, your pants or pantyhose, etc...

It's even possible that you contracted the infection after leaving the salon. You could have touched someone or something contaminated at any point after leaving. After all, your skin was already irritated from the waxing, so defenses would have been low. Even normal waxing does some damage to the skin , disrupting the topmost layers.

Even with the best and most stringent precautions, infections can happen.

And I'll add that usually the skin is swiped with an antibacterial solution before starting, just to lessen the risk of irritation. Maybe they forgot or skipped this part. Again, you don't really have enough evidence to blame them for your infection, but in the future you could make sure to request that they clean the area before getting started.

The prescription can be called in or faxed. I'm more concerned that apparently it was diagnosed over the phone.

My point exactly. No ethical physician I have ever seen or heard of will prescribe medication without actually seeing the patient in person.

It's gaining popularity (while being a norm in Europe, apparently) and the FDA seems to have mixed opinions on it. The main issue being antibiotic resistance and dosing people unnecessarily.

She never swiped me with anything before starting.

I won't be going back, to her, just in case, and because she's not close. Next time I will ask them about their sanitary procedures first.
