ORIGINAL: NorthernGent quote:
ORIGINAL: Sanity “Peace is not the absence of war but the presence of justice” I think you may have missed a pertinent point as it should read: "....not merely the absence of war....", which gives the quote an altogether different complexion. I'm not sure what the point of quoting this is, though, given that 100% of people on this thread value law and order. On second thoughts, I'll take that back as it seems a similar quote can be attributed to Spinoza, i.e. "not the absence of war". Not sure of the relevance in the context of the thread? The absence of fear, the presence of opportunity, the freedom to travel, work, live, and worship how you choose (as long as no one else is affected.) There's a lot to peace. Many things have to be both in place and functioning before peace can be 'declared.' Those things take justice. If a nation abuses its citizens, is it just to let them? If a man kills a dozen other men, is it just to allow him to live his life, no matter how confined? Most people's conceptions of peace cannot include beatings, imprisonment, rape, slavery, and the like. Without justice, there is no peace.
