8th Grade Class Receives Immigration Assignment that Leaves One Dad Shaking His Head

At Shattuck Middle School in Wisconsin, one 8th grade class was assigned homework on the topic of immigration policy in the United States using the following illustration...

The homework assignment asks:

Who are the men in the picture (What is their job? Look at what they are doing for a hint)
What are they building?
What do the symbols on their shirts represent?
What is action being done by each man?
What might this mean to us about immigration and citizenship?

What could possibly be wrong with this?

Jim Strick, the Communications Director for the Neenah Joint School District, confirmed to IJ Review that Davis did in fact assign the politically-charged worksheet. However, Strick was adamant that the assignment was not intended to shape the children’s political views...

Yeah, no.

Wisconsin Mom Alarmed at What School Quiz Suggests Conservatives Think About the Poor

Students at Nathan Hale High School were asked to place this and other statements on a political spectrum...

We should not help the poor, it’s a waste of money.

The answer scored as correct is Conservative/Republican.

The student’s mother told Fox News the correction bothered her son... “We tend to only see what they are learning as parents when they need our assistance on something. I think that all parents need to realize that there are things taught sometimes to their kids that aren’t true or at best are misleading.”

This is what they want more money to teach?

K.

The appearance to me is that the educational system is teaching pure politics under some other guise. I don't view this as a good idea.

Nothing wrong here. The image is quite neutral. Its showing a slice of American history (very recent US History). It shows the Democrats helping people enjoy being free and Republicans as the scum they are. Nope, don't see any problem with it. Its not politically charged, because anyone with half a brain could tell this image is an all true statement about the two major political parties on the topic of immigration.

What? Dont have half a brain?

Dont see any problem here either.....

The statement: "We should not help the poor, it’s a waste of money.", is indeed a conservative/Republican viewpoint.

Should we not teach students true information rather that political ideology? Saying that conservative/Republican viewpoint of helping the poor and its a good use of the taxpayer money, would be a falsehood. Its the stuff FOX 'new's would try to pass off as true.

Thank you for your reply, joether, but you seem to have screwed up the quotes.

Could you please fix that? I want to have this one bronzed.

Yes we shouldn't teach students about freedom of speech, individual rights, and right to choose one's religious views. Those are all political topics. According to you, we should not teach anything related to US History. Because much of US History is based around politics. Brown verse Board of Education, is a historical moment in US History. But it is also a political viewpoint at the time. There are people today, whom feel we should force students to accept Creationism right next to actual science. Tell me that's not pushing politics and religion down someone's throat?

Teaching the kids the Constitution is both political and historical. And in some ways, law. However, teaching them Democratic Dogma vs Republican Dogma is political.

I posted this in the helicopter parent thread, it works here too. its a quote by engels, one of the fathers of communism:

“With the transfer of the means of production into common ownership, the single family ceases to be the economic unit of society. Private housekeeping is transformed into a social industry. The care and education of the children becomes a public affair..."

contemporary elementary and secondary education (not to mention college) is awash with examples like what you've shared, some blatant, some surreptitious. i'll do some looking around and post some actual examples that occur in school, as well as some statements that illustrate the invidiousness of the leftist philosophy concerning education.

I would like to say it's unfathomable to me also but I have lived most of my life outside of Detroit and have heard the same type of bullshit from racists so I am getting used to it. It is sad though, I'll give you that.

Engles was german, who died in 1895
AMazing that left leaning countries, like most of europe, the UK and Canada, families and education arent nearly as fucked up as the US(
but you still want to assign blame to a communist(therefore leftist view)
I know you have me on hide*sighs* But your post is as wrong as it was factually wrong on the helicopter kids thread.

here is a partial explanation:

“We often focus on the ideological biases of the university, where the more lunatic examples of political correctness get the most attention. But in education as in economics, there is a trickle-down effect. The grandees at the elite universities train the PhD’s who go on to second and third tier institutions, where they in turn train the students who get high school and grade school teaching credentials. They also write most of the textbooks that end up in K-12 classrooms. Thus the progressive ideology metastasizes throughout the educational system, determining the curriculum, the textbooks, and the point of view of the teachers. At that level the ideas may be garbled, half-baked, incoherent, and a collection of clichés and slogans. But they are still toxic and effective at transmitting a world-view to impressionable minds.

“When my kids were in public school I witnessed this process over and over. Questionable leftist ideas I had to sit through in graduate seminars turned up regularly in my kids’ English and history courses and textbooks…”

here is another partial explanation:

the NEA is the largest union in the country and is the one most associated with public school teaching. the photo below is information from the 2012 election cycle and who they contributed to. between 300-400 national politicians received donations from them. in that mix of 300-400, there were roughly a dozen republicans, amounting to just a handful of thousands of dollars, compared to close to 2 million for the rest. and yes, this has been the history of the NEA, not just 2012. it gives some insight as to the political leanings of teachers (though not all), and to which side the of the political spectrum the organization that leads teachers goes.

The NEA has been a target for extermination by the GOP tea party and conservatives, why would anyone with smarts give money to candidates who wants them shut down.

Hopefully that 8th Grader will see how a minority in just one branch of Congress can stop all legislation.

THE DREAM ACT passed the house and had a majority of votes in the Senate -- but without a Senate super majority, it went nowhere.

Businesses, Evangelicals, Catholics, and Democrats all want to pass reform.

Lucy I think it has, at least in my case, more to do with unions. Teachers are public employees.

They work at the will of the people, not the union.
They already have rights that most non-governmental employees would love to have (civil service)
The membership must pay dues, and thus support causes, regardless of the desires of the individual.

I was forced, by the government, to join a governmental union. A part of the by-laws said that the membership had no control over it's activities. That was vested solely in the Board of Directors and Executive Board.
