Status: offline 		Human behaviour is complex; objectively understanding and predicting it isn't.

Studies aren't replicated. They always involve different samples of a population and often involve different independent and dependent variables.

Psychology has a premise that creates our understanding of behaviour (and it's amazing to study) but as with everything else its constantly evolving, so there is nothing uncertain. Look at the relationship and the significance. Focus on longitudinal studies and do not look for causation.

Status: offline 		Pretty much, this study of studies concluded that half of them (roughly) were hogwash.
I guess that means the other half were decent, so, all is not lost.
It just means we need to carry a sack of salt with us whenever we hear of a new psychological study.

Status: offline 		With a loy of research it's misinterpretation by the people reading it to take into account to. Reporters that write about studies rarely understand them.... just the other day on the news they repprted "fat gene found!" And I audibly groaned "now everyone is going to think they were born fat"

With psychology it's even worse because social evolution changes they way people think really quickly... ive always strongly been opposed to the field. Trying to create a guideline by which people behave then criminalizes any who don't behave by that guideline.

Status: offline 		I agree with Nookie. I will also add, there are many experiments that can't be replicated, period -- and it is almost always due to mistakes made by the researcher.

When your research is math based, it's easy to catch a mistake made in calculation. When it is personality or mind based, well gee, it can be hard to know how to execute an accurate scientific study. It takes lots of trial and error, hence the inability to replicate.

Agreed.

We were all taught, in all our science classes, that the "experiment" isn't only about the results.
It also includes documenting the method.

If someone else can't reproduce the results using the documented method, then, a grain of salt starts to grow into a larger and larger crystal (witness cold fusion).
