You seem to have some networking knowledge, which is more than we can say for most people here (especially the inevitable trolls), so, let's work together to figure out WHY and WHERE the collar(stuff) sites are breaking down. quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me none of them are valid for my problems. Actually, you can't say that the two tests I proposed aren't GENERAL USE tests: 1. A baseline speedtest, and, 2. A baseline trace route In fact, the traceroute "could" reveal a bad server, as you must be aware, somewhere in the chain. I realize you're dismissing that out of hand, and I completely understand, as I think the problem lies somewhere in the implementation of the clouflare-to-collarstuff sites, or in the collastuff servers themselves. So I ask you: Where do you think the problem lies? quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me I even use sites to see if the site is just down for me or everyone, and most times its down for everyone. Yup. I was gonna get to those next. I had planned on a general-networking debug thread for a while, so, maybe what we learn here can be applied to that thread, so that everyone benefits from each of our efforts. quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me I just ask if other people get the lag & time outs. So I am confused as to why you felt it necessary to post all this? Did I miss something? If I am a gamer, and I do not share my connection, why did you feel the need to post all this unnecessary information? As I said, the general complaint that the collarspace/collarchat sites have been offline, slow, flaky, and giving a dozen different errors is extremely well known. So, unless you and I ADD VALUE, your thread (and mine) simply become "complaint" threads, where nothing new will be learned. So, since you seem to have some networking skills, let's all work together to determine WHERE the networking problem lies! quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me I prefer the following when I do need to do a speed test or other checks, There are many web sites that run speedtests, some of which require javascript and flash, and others don't require so much. Personally, I mostly use the command-line speed tests (because they require nothing and they're also easier to put into scripts), but, to help others, I added your speedtest link to the aforementioned networking thread. quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me I do not use ISP speed tests as they often times are pointless being they use their own servers to run the test from me back to them, and this is not always valid with other servers. I think you're actually wrong on this interpretation, but, your general idea is spot on correct in that we wouldn't want an ISP-specific speedtest site. (I use Comcasts's speedtest for all ISPs, not just when I'm on Comcast because I think it's more accurate than the Speedtest site you used, but either site is just fine for the general purpose audience so let's not quibble about which site we use to test fundamental Internet connectivity.) So, I put both the Comcast test site (which I prefer over your suggestion) and the speedtest.net test site into the general-purpose networking thread. We should mention that there are PLENTY of other speetest sites, such as the ones run by the VOIP companies that test even more things (such as jitter). But, for most people, having the two sites (speedtest & speedtest.comcast) should suffice. quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me With SpeedTest.net I can use any servers around the world. I don't generally test my speeds around the world, so I didn't look, but with almost any test site (including Comcast) you can change the server (since that is a critical factor, we all agree). quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me Also I hate Comcast with a passion, same as my own ISP Charter they both suck at life! Me too. I have multiple homes, some with Comcast, and others with NOTHING except Internet from the sky. I just installed a new WiFi antenna, for example, for my neighbor, this week, as we have to fend for ourselves where I live. The distance from his antenna to his nearest access point is about 10 miles for example. quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me Shame I don't get fiber here as I would swap & never look back. We don't have ANY services where I live (no cable, no dsl, not even water or sewage or gas). All we have are phone & electricity, where everyone has their own generator because the power goes out once a month in the winter. We have to learn how to fend for ourselves. So, for you to want fiber is fine, but I'd be happy with just cable! :) quote:
ORIGINAL: HugeStrapon4Me * IsItDownRightNow.com - A great way to check sites to see if they are online or not, and even gives the load times. So yeah I am well aware of how to check on sites as I use these kinds of links to check on the sites I webmaster, and own. These types of links are great, as you know, because they run historical tests that tell us whether a site is down for just us or for everyone, and for how long. The results are, I think, slightly complicated by the fact that cloudflare has been inserted in between, which means that nobody is going to the same server, but that's why we should pool our knowledge and resources to figure out where the problems lie. I'm sure the admins of this site know EXACTLY where the problems lie, but that doesn't help us if they won't tell us.
