The only driver problem I've ever had with Windows 7 is on very old HP towers where it sometimes loads the wrong CD driver and that has only ever happened ONCE on a HP a409UK tower system.

Other than that, I've never had a problem with Windows 7 Ultimate (32-bit or 64-bit versions) and I've installed literally dozens and dozens of machines with them - towers and laptops alike, from old 2001 stuff to brand new ones, not a hiccup.

I can't say that for Win 8/8.1 or Win10.

Yep. I've had problems with my graphics card since my downgrade from Win 7 to 10. No fix in sight even now from either MS or the card manufacturer.

To be honest, I've finally lost all interest in what MS operating systems can do. It's become boring. I suppose it's like kitchen tables: ultimately, you don't care about your kitchen table, you only care what there is on it to eat. I wiped nearly all the 'exciting extras' that Win 10 had to offer over Win 7 because they seemed like frivolous prettifications that were so pointless they didn't seem worth learning how to use.

I was brought up before computers took off. I read a lot of sci fi and I think that spoiled me. I kind of assumed that, by my present age, computers would have become properly intelligent, rather than the souped up electronic calculators that they still are. I want an OS that *really* does something new and big.

Greta75 -> RE: WINDOWS 10 (3/14/2016 5:15:06 PM)

I still can't get over how great XP was! It went downhill from there.

I hate Windows 7! And still am considering if it's worth changing from Windows 7 to Windows 10, or wait longer for new version.

I skip Windows 8 because everybody told me don't bother.

MrRodgers -> RE: WINDOWS 10 (3/17/2016 7:34:49 PM)

Bought a garden variety ACER not long ago for my first desktop in years. Had 8.1 went to 10 recently and have had no problems at all.

lovmuffin -> RE: WINDOWS 10 (3/19/2016 6:33:18 AM)

We upgraded to 10 several months ago but it was such a pain in the ass we went back to 8 (you could do that for 30 days, I'm not sure if you still can). We have decided that from now on we're only going to buy Macs.

I updated and it works fine so far
I use macs too and they are slower on average

so should I stay with 8.1 got used to it ???

I'd go with Windows 7 or Windows 10, but not go back to 8.1.

10 has been pretty stable on my system. In fact, it's the first time in 15 years I think Microsoft actually made something that wasn't a total piece of shit. See for yourself

windows 10 benchmark vs windows 7 vs windows 8

ShaharThorne -> RE: WINDOWS 10 (3/24/2016 1:47:36 AM)

I DLed 10 with no problem. Aside from 1 little problem which Microsoft made a patch for the next day, the most trouble I have is learning the system (vastly different from 7). Been going good since August.

(From a consumer product comparison site)

What are the issues with Windows 10 I should know about?

Privacy issues

Probably the biggest complaint people have had since Windows 10 was released is that it is invading its users’ privacy, big time. Selecting Privacy from the settings menu opens a rather intimidating window with 12 different menus of privacy settings to go through — many of these menus have multiple settings for you to read and understand. Additionally, the voice-controlled personal assistant Cortana and other features collect and access so much of your data that some people have gone so far as to call Windows 10 an elaborate spyware program. Data collection is something that many companies already do quite a lot of — think Facebook and other social media. But Microsoft 10 goes above and beyond when it comes to data collection, which understandably makes many people nervous. You can edit your settings to control what information is sent to Microsoft, and you can also disable Cortana.

In order to disable Cortana, navigate to the Privacy section of your Settings and click on the Speech, Inking and Typing tab. Once that opens, you can click on "Stop getting to know me" to disable Cortana. The language used here is, frankly, unsettling and many users will probably be glad to rid themselves of this feature. Another feature you should consider turning off can be found within the General tab. It controls whether Windows 10 will collect data on you to enable targeted advertising.

Using your bandwidth

The Windows Update Delivery Optimization feature included with Windows 10 is designed to help users get faster software updates. In theory, this is a nice idea. It works much the same as torrents; your computer running Windows 10 is used to deliver updates to other computers as part of a peer-to-peer network. The idea is that each user's computer will provide a little bit of the files to multiple computers, helping everyone download the updates more quickly. However, doing so means using your bandwidth. Since this is a default feature that Microsoft does not inform users about when they upgrade, that means many users are having their bandwidth used without their knowledge or permission. For those whose ISPs cap their bandwidth usage, this could be a huge problem.

Fortunately, you can disable this feature. First, click on your start menu then select Settings. In the Settings menu, click on Update and Security. A new window will open to the Windows Update tab. From here, click on Advance Options to open up a second window. Finally, clicking on "Choose how updates are delivered" in this window will get you to the place where you can disable the feature. Turn the slider so it says "Off" and Windows 10 will no longer use your bandwidth to update other people's computers.

Hi,

I am running windows 10 the 64bit - "Pro" version ... at first look it looked like .. shit really ... some settings the user can not change them at all.
other thing is that microsoft is actually spying on the users using windows 10. i did not pay a single dime for my version as i didnt for 8 pro or 8.1.

I am trying to get used to it really, i think everyone has his/her openion on windows. but, as windows XP and Visat died severla years ago .... its se7en time to die now I think.

Me too. And I 'm still waiting on my jetpack. I really can't believe we can do everything that we have, yet still no jetpack.

Since the software that I use for my business isn't 10 compatible, I'm still on 8.1

WickedsDesire -> RE: WINDOWS 10 (4/2/2016 11:27:02 AM)

dcnovice and BondageersT( I will do that lecture on here to you in a public forum) raise interesting points. in that it is essentially spy ware,data mine your pc to fukery...but you can turn, and should, everyone of those settings off.

OsideGirl Since the software that I use for my business isn't 10 compatible, I'm still on 8.1. that statement surprises me perhaps you can elaborate.

But make no mistake about it windows 8 or 8x is an utter piece of shittery and akin to windows mellenium.

I am either olde enough, or mad enough, to remember every version eg win 3.11, win98se, xp (not going to mention 2000), win 7 at a push and win 10 if you fiddled about with some sypware settings

So there you have it, windows 10 (or7) is just fine and even i know they had to recode xp - although they should be sued for inventing new turds,

Hmm driver issues...i think that is a cahoots cash thingy

Windows 10 you can still change everything, but it is hard to find some of the old control panel settings/menus. There is an option called GOD mode in Windows 10. To access it, create a folder on your desktop called GodMode.{ED7BA470-8E54-465E-825C-99712043E01C} One the folder is created double click on it. Every control panel setting will be there. The link below will also show you step by step instructions from Cnet's website for God Mode. Enjoy!

is it absolutely perfect, better than 8.1...
Congratulations on your new status as a fully-monitored vassal of Microsoft. I expect they'll be passing on your kinky conversations to the NSA as a matter of course.

I am olde enough, and its funny that my business software came out about the time of 3.1 and Ive used it since, in its various constructions. But as I have a 64 bit machine, im wasting lots of time on 32 bit programs.
Windows 10 doesnt improve my system or my working needs at all.

PS Doc, thanks for the god mode info:)
