Wrong, ninjas do not have cool looking ships with lots of sails, nor do they get the drop dead gorgeous girl with the great boobs.

And speaking of ships with lots of sails, it is at this point that I need to point out a very important fact lost on the vast OVERWHELMING majority of you land lubbers.

Ship: Noun; a sailing vessel having a bowsprit and usually three masts each composed of a lower mast, a topmast, and a topgallant mast

Now, in all that definition, is there ONE mention of an engine or other means of propulsion?

NO

This indicates two things.

1) all those sacrilegious, blasphemous, abominations plying the oceans utilizing something other than wind for propulsion are not ships

And,

2) All those who seek passage or otherwise deal with such vessels are bound for the lowest level of hell, usually reserved for traitors and mutineers.

Now, I base this on a few facts from religion and myth.

Now for those who believe in an almighty, or a group of almighty omniscient, all powerful beings, looking back at the texts of these beliefs, did any one god or group of gods tell any of their sea going believers to build a sea going vessel and place any kind of unnatural propulsion system on said vessels?

NO.

For those that do not believe in a god or gods or goddesses, and stay strictly in the realm of science, I ask you the following.

Prior to the advent of a man made propulsion system, where there any accidents involving sea going vessels that were the direct result of a the explosion of the means of propulsion resulting in fouling the oceans and a great loss of life?

Again the answer is a resounding NO.

Furthermore, I will submit even more conclusive proof that the sea does not like artificial propulsion systems, which had they not been utilized would not have resulted in a great loss of life.

I give you the incident involving the white star liner Titanic.

Had the vessel not been powered by steam and therefore travelling at a velocity greater than what would have been provided by sail, the impact with the infamous iceberg would not have been so catastrophic.

The proof of this statement is clear by the simple fact that after impacting the ice berg, the ship continued moving and thus allowed the spur of said ice berg to tear a long gash down the side of the vessel rendering unable to remain afloat.

Had the vessel been propelled by sail, the impact would have resulted in a sudden, albeit violently so, stop and damage would have been minimal.

In other words, the North Atlantic (a violently vengeful bitch of an ocean) would not have claimed so many lives on a vessel she clearly did not want on her surface due to the fact it violated the laws of nature being powered by steam.

As far as the whole "pirates vs ninjas" thing goes, historically AD&D slanted towards the "pirates" side of things under TSR and only went all ninja-ey when WOTC bought out TSR. Yes, there were ninjas in the original first edition Oriental Adventures, but whatever else can be said against the universally loathed by RPG nerds Lorraine Whatserface AD&D's second edition emphasised pirates over ninjas. There were supplements for swashbuckle-y stuff, supplements for sailing ships of various sorts, and a paucity of ninjas.
In fact, this whole "pirates vs ninjas" thing only started after TSR was bought out. Wasn't even a contest before that, was it? In AD&D 2E the pirates had won, and then some.
