Seriously, as far as monsters go, these things are about as big a threat as gnat to a battleship.

Once more let me point out a few weaknesses for this creature.

1) It is an animated corpse, corpses rot, when they rot they fall apart, so the damn things would be falling to pieces in a little over a week.

2) Corpses decompose, this causes gases to build up inside them, which causes the things to explode once the gas pressure exceeds the ability of the rotting skin to contain it.

3) Zombies are slow, from the episodes of TWD I have seen, a grand mother with both legs in a cast using a walker could out run them going up hill.

Of course, again from what I have seen in the few episodes of TWD and the infrequent viewings of Zombie themed movies, there are a few observations that can be made.

A) Evidently the people not infected with Zombie syndrome do become infected with terminal stupidity, because the majority of the victims are caught in places where there is but one entrance.

Thus they become trapped and become a Zombie buffet.

B) Somebody always comes up with the plan to stay IN the city where they are outnumbered.

Again, they become a Zombie fast food menu item.

C) Then there is the guy that comes up with the idea to wait for the zombies to come to them.

Now the virus basis for the Zombie infection.

While there are viruses that do cause symptoms such as mindlessness, they do not have any connection for the desire to eat brains.

As for undead, or walking dead monsters to worry about, might I suggest mummies? I mean these critters come back because some idiot goes and fucks with their tomb. No matter what you do, you cant stop them until you put back whatever it is you took that pissed them off in the first place.

I've always felt that the post Romero zombie is basically just a crippled vampire with brain damage and no table manners.

There's at least a couple of '80s horror flicks (though I can't remember the title of either: that's how good they are) that use mummies the same way as every other Italian horror director at the time was using zombies.

The viral model for zombies is unconvincing, but there are some other ones that seem, if not exactly credible, a bit less preposterous. The excellent Living Dead At Manchester Morgue, for instance, has the nervous systems of the recently dead being agitated by subsonic pest control devices designed to kill insects on farmland. Mind you, I might be biased in this one as I believe it's the single best zombie film ever made: it's the only Italian rip off I've seen that makes mincemeat out of NOTLD.

I think the "not decomposing to the point of falling apart" is an effect of whatever makes the zombies move and hunger.
Either that or it's just because the story needs it.

A cripple can outrun zombies, yes, but the threat comes from the higher numbers and their not needing to catch their breath or sleep, ever.

Mummies are cool, but they come in such tiny numbers...

What we need is ghouls.

You know that was how Romero referred to his undead in NOTLD? He never used the Z word, which I think wasn't applied to anything of his until DOTD was retitled "Zombie" in Italy. They were ghouls in the first two scripts.

Further zombie notes (this time leaning towards Dungeon type arguments):

There's a long standing argument among subtext fans that zombies are a metaphor for the proletariat (while vampires are aristocratic and werewolves are middle class). I've never been entirely sure that I buy that one, despite the surprisingly large amount of fiction that involves zombies being forcibly conscripted as slave labour, but it is notable that the current boom in zombie fiction does seem to have coincided with the various cultural shifts to the right that culminated in the election of a President with tiny hands on Tuesday.
Myself, I find the argument that there's left leaning subtexts to a lot of horror fiction laughable, as neither the people who produce most of it, nor the people who consume most of it are particularly left leaning. (Stephen King's argument in Danse Macabre that the reactionary elements of most horror fiction is merely a protective camouflage is the most ridiculous statement he's ever made, and look at some of the competition it's fought off for that role.) However, as a reactionary's portrayal of the working class (and the non-working underclass of spongers, moochers and professional criminals) zombies seem to fit quite well: they're stupid, parasitical on the lives of real people who need saving from them, only dangerous in mobs, and wouldn't be a problem at all if stupid eggheads and do gooders just left things as they were instead of tampering with a system that worked perfectly well.
