needlesandpins -> bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 6:11:24 AM)

Is it just me, or is anyone else getting a stupid Bing advert popping out from the side bar when changing certain pages in here? It's only started doing it today, and it flashes so quickly that it's really bloody irritating.

Is using chrome these days...everything is fine for me here

clean out your cookies internet history etc which browser are you using?

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 7:34:08 AM)

Using FireFox this end (and sometimes IE) - don't see anything like that at all across all 17 machines here.

You sure you haven't inadvertently installed a browser 'helper' at some point?
Coz that's what it sounds like to me.

WickedsDesire -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 7:39:21 AM)

As freedomworf1 said could also be a bit of bad adware from another site. A simple clean out of the browsers temp files cache etc usually remedies that problem so dont panic.

needlesandpins -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 7:40:33 AM)

I'm using Chrome, but I also have adblock, so what I have done is added bing to the list, and that does appear to have stopped it. It was so quick that it took me ages if clicking around to figure out what the ad even was. It's definitely only on this site, and only since this morning. I haven't loaded anything new to my lappy, have done a sweep to check for anything hidden, have checked everything I can manually and found nothing. The flash was annoying because as a Migraine sufferer with ME that kind of nonsense is a trigger for all kinds of pain I just don't need on top of what I already suffer.

Anyway, no idea what the cause is, but Adblock is the solution [:)]

I don't use Adblock or any other Ad-blocking software.
I would get to the bottom of why this happened and where it came from.

Adblock only stops it displaying on your screen - it doesn't stop it being downloaded in the first place (or anything else it wants to download silently) and it doesn't stop whatever it's doing in the background that you can't see.

What are you using to sweep your system with?
Some things are better than others.

needlesandpins -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 7:53:31 AM)

Actually, I take that all back, it hasn't bloody worked! I use Avast. It's still doing its thing from the scrolling side bar, but again so quickly I can't see what it is. I've cleared temporary files going back four weeks. Avast can't find anything, so no idea what this is but it's doing my head in.

Sometimes text colours scream at me to...same lurgy.

I use chrome, rarely firefox.

With that I will use Norton internet security...all i need..all anyone needs a reputable Virus protection/firewall..i cant speak for windows 10 defender is that enough anyone?

Thats all you need needles

Its probably just a bad bit of adware from another site and the clean out will resolve it. You dont even need to click on an advert for this to happen.

Clear browsing data from the beginning of time on chrome I will do that once a week or so, or if I have a similar problem to you

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 7:58:53 AM)

Sorry WD, if whatever it is has installed itself into your browser bar, clearing cookies etc won't help one jot.
And.... because you've allowed it for your browser (somehow), most AV's won't detect it as malware or spyware either.

I used to use Norton but it's too cumbersome for anything but a very fast machine (and expensive).

GentleDommeBBW70 -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 8:01:00 AM)

:) ok!

What are you running for an OS and what else do you have except Avast for your AntiVirus?

If something has hooked itself into your browser as a 'helper', Avast won't see it as dangerous.

Avast is for the likes of Trojans and viruses, it's not good at detecting malware.
Malware is a different kind of beast and needs different software to detect it.

Have you tried MalwareBytes' AntiMalware??
With Windows Defender, it's all I've used for over 8 years now and we've not been hit with anything by accident.

If you want AntiMalware, you need to get version 2.1.6.1022.
If you get the newer version you'll have to pay for it (I have keys for the slightly older one).
ETA: download this version for free at File Hippo
When you've done that, let me know and I'll give you some keys.
Install the free version OFFLINE (Pull the internet plug or turn off the WiFi).
Register with the keys and change the preferences Update section to NOT update the program.
Reconnect internet, update the database, do a full threat scan.
Whatever it finds, let it delete it (I've never ever found a false positive), you may have to reboot.
Rinse and repeat until there is zero items found.

Can't PM you either.

I'm running Windows 7 Pro, and I'm on a very old recon machine that just can't cope with the likes of Norton. I'm guessing this thing has snuck in then somehow, and I'm not impressed. I also used to use Spybot, which was fantastic at catching all sorts of crap, and then they changed how it ran, and it started messing up all sorts of things. I have auto updates switched off so that I know exactly what is coming on to the machine, but I just can't fine where this bugger is hiding, and I don't understand why it's only on this forum.

Edited my previous post.

If you can PM me where I can send you the registration codes I'll gladly do so.

I Run XP SP3 and Windows7 Ultimate this end across 17 or 18 different PC's and laptops.
Some are too old for Win7 so they have XP.
I have some on 32-bit and 3 on 64-bit Win7 and 4 machines are dual-boot XP/Win7.

~~fast reply~~
It is happening on my computer---I haven't added anything recently. And it just started this morning.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 10:30:43 AM)

You don't necessarily need to install or add anything.

Just getting malware tucked into spam email with a preview pane open or just clicking it will install malware - even if you delete it afterwards.

Also, having Bing as your search engine, knowing how M$ like to bombard you with 'new stuff', it wouldn't surprise me in the least if it came from a normal search engine or add-on update - just because it's there.

I always delete all toolbars, all search engines and all 'helpers' from my browsers.

DocStrange -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 10:33:53 AM)

I am wondering if this is a CollarSpace advertisement for Bing that is poorly execute like the rest of CS programming? Versus Bing installing something on Chrome

Edited to add:
I just looked at the HTML programming. CS programmed it in page. It is not from Bing. It is from Collarspace programming. Poorly executed as usual.

UllrsIshtar -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 10:42:00 AM)

I'm using Chrome OS, and I had it happen two days ago. I cleared cookies, and edit search engine settings, and it went away.

Starting today, however, I get a Bing search thingy hovering over certain words on the forum. Only on this site, so I'm assuming CM is doing something.

freedomdwarf1 -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 10:43:23 AM)

If that were true, why aren't we all getting it??

I rebooted several machines this afternoon and I'm not seeing it at all.

Edit: maybe it's just something for Chrome.
I don't use it because it doesn't render a lot of my pages correctly.
Plus, of course, it no longer supports XP.

DocStrange -> RE: bing pop out??? (11/13/2016 10:46:14 AM)

I cannot tell you why you are not seeing it. I can only tell you it is programmed into the HTML coding. All you have to do is right click on the webpage and view the page source. It clearly shows the coding for Bing

Thanks for the offer, but I've tried this before, and for some reason it wouldn't run correctly on this laptop. Also as I'm running Avast defender insists in switching off, and not allowing me to switch it back on again as it insists that I'm not the administrator. It's all very annoying [&o]
