In my studies, it has been discussed that shaving, for example, leaves micro-cuts in the skin, which means direct-to blood contact. Waxing can do the same thing when hairs are ripped out of their follicles. Also, a "bush" provides a small barrier against skin-to-skin contact outside of the condom zone (which only protects from SOME STDs/STIs), and offers some protection there, especially from HSV lesion-skin contact. After reading the article, it seems to me that it's a bit silly. That's ONE study.
