ORIGINAL: Greta75 Okay, it's the terminology that is very confusing. There is a lot of terminology that can get confusing. Even among educators some of it is treated interchangeably when it shouldn't be. quote:
Charter schools equals Private school? That's all it means right? Yes and no. They receive public funds, based on some of the same criteria that public schools do, they do not require the accountability that public schools do. But because they do receive public funding, they are not truly private so they have to meet federal guidelines in certain things, such as non-discrimination (theoretically). quote:
If that's all it means, it's a bit strange the whole charter schools push. Why can't public schools and charter schools co-exist together? So people have plenty of choices to choose public or charter? Because they compete with each other for funding. And since there is no system of accountability for charter schools along the scale of that like there is for public schools, there have been huge problems with financial fraud and quality of education. Don't get me wrong. There are some good charter schools out there. I've seen them. But there is still too much inconsistency and unaccountably in the concept to be able to argue that its worth taking money away from the public school system. Charter schools are hit and miss more than any other educational system I have seen out there. As far as the different educational systems go, there are pros and cons to them all. There are lots of people who say that people should not home-school their children, that only religious freaks do it. And I have seen several kids come my way from being home-schooled that were definitely stunted socially and a few that were nowhere near the academic level that they should be. But I can also tell you that far and away, the most amazing students that I have ever have had have all been homeschooled up until they were in the 8th or 9th grade. I have had to really take a hard look at the different types of schooling (public, private, homeschooling, magnet, charter, unschooling, proprietary schools etc) because of the different types of kids that I have worked with, and have had to change some assumptions. But I have a lot of concerns over charter schools. But you want to have a fun argument? Get in a discussion with an educator over unschooling!
