ORIGINAL: NotFiftyShades I absolutely LOVE the way defunding planned parenthood is always compared to taking away women's rights. The fact that their main focus is abortion and NOT women's health An estimated 42% of their services end up being for STD screenings and treatments An estimated 34% of their services end up being for pregnancy prevention and birth control (including vasectomies and sterilization procedures) Other services include cancer screenings, sex education, pregnancy tests, prenatal care, and yes, about 3% of its services are abortions, none of which are funded with your taxes. saw almost 5X as many patients for sex education than patients that came to them for abortions prevented an estimated 1.8X as many unintended pregnancies as it did abortions it performed saw almost 3X as many patients for emergency contraception as it did abortion patients performed 3445 vasectomies (GASP, THEY TREAT MEN AS WELL?) performed over 700 sterilization procedures saw 13X as many patients for STD screenings and treatment as they did abortions saw nearly 2X as many patients for cervical and breast cancer screenings as they did for abortions http://www.cnn.com/2015/08/04/health/planned-parenthood-by-the-numbers/ When I was in college and covered under my college provided health insurance, getting birth control and 'yearly woman exam' from them, as the old physician there called them, he told me as young as I was that I didn't need a pap smear as often as recommended, despite being sexually active. That being his opinion, I couldn't get one through my health insurance, so I went to PP. They detected a virus that adolescents are commonly vaccinated against now, but weren't then. Lots of women slough it off when they get it, but some don't. I didn't. They told me then when I was in college, that it could one day cause me to be diagnosed with cervical cancer and that I always needed to be screened for it. Guess what I was just told a few weeks ago? I have cervical cancer. But I am in the earliest stages of it, as early as can be caught. Because I had early warning and knew what to look for and what to tell my doctors. Pretty damn good for an organization whose main concern is not women's health.[sm=ofcourse.gif] I have a pretty damn good prognosis, thanks to them. If I were to liken fighting cancer to going to a gun fight, I would have to say that PP started me on arms training a couple of decades ago.
