I wish every day I had the power to make changes in this world. If I could save it, I would.

This planet is awe inspiringly beautiful. Humanities destructive nature is only equaled by its creative spirit.

Have you watched Suicide Squad? That's how they gonna force you to do it!

Implant an explosive in your brain. You either save the world or die!

Funny you should mention it. I just watched the movie last week and I thought it was pretty good. I was very pleasantly surprised.

OP I would enslave all the world for that is what us better altruistic folks do. You may apply for the position of minion but I am equally likely to hurl you into a volcano on a day ending with Y. I will of course rename the days: Muffinday, Hurlthemintovolcanoday etc - well, you get the drift.

what would we be saving the world from anyway?

Is it just me or is just about every superhero movie in the last 10-20 years completely shit? Dont you let me down wonder woman I love you, both of them

And the flash should totally be the flash in that new up and coming - probably another completely shite movie

Right where was I

Don't anyone go see Logan, unless you want to walk out of the theater totally depressed and disillusioned. Just saying'.

That's what I want from an X Men movie...

As for the the Flash, did you know he's Grant Morrison's favourite superhero ever, WD?

I'm kind of disappointed to hear this. Without spoilers, can you say why the film left you feeling this way? Was it just bad writing/directing, poor continuity, or something else?

(Just for fun, we should do an X-Men thread one of these days.)

I'm just thinking that most of the better X Men comics I remember reading are bleak, doomy and gloomier than a herd of goths the day after hot topic stopped carrying aquanet hair spray. The films should be doing that as well.

(We really should, yes.)

DesFIP -> RE: Please read entire question before answering. (4/21/2017 3:34:08 PM)

The only thing I can imagine being arrested for is civil disobedience. Now that it's legal to mow down peaceful protestors, dragging one old lady with a cane to jail should be easy.

I have children, so certainly I would do my best to save them.

I must say, that in all my life, the op is the first person with mental illness I feel no sympathy for. Her absolute refusal to do the work required to become a happier person is the sticking point for me. I dislike entitled people immensely.

Hard to force someone with suicidal tendencies to do their bidding. They'd only be doing me and the world a favor. Oops, did I mention earlier that I'd be invincible? They couldn't kill me if they wanted o. But I would enjoy going around tacking pictures of those who wronged me...souveni, ya know!

Oh, yeah, I neglected to mention that Lady Pact made the ignore list, so I won't see what see's she's saying either. See how long she realizes that I don't give a fuck what she says either...just like stef

DesFIP -> RE: Please read entire question before answering. (4/21/2017 5:11:40 PM)

You putting her on hide means you don't see what she says. Not that she can't see your posts.

I can't even fathom a reason why that would enter my mind.

Laughter, children, the beauty in a kind gesture...the faint green tint in the air after a spring rain, the sounds of birds in spring. Light that filters through a wooded canopy bringing the tiniest creatures into crisp focus. Bonfires on the beach, dancing in the rain and splashing in mud puddles. The sight of elderly couples holding hands, and acting silly. People, are beautifu, and interesting and so full of potential and creative and connected to this beautiful planet, not separate or apart.

Why wouldn't anyone want to save our world?

I don't give a fuck if she reads my shit, she and stef has made it their life's goal to follow me everywhere I go. By the same token, I don't give a fuck what they think or say about me anymore. I'm so over them, they need a life and stop trying to change mine. They haven't changed me all these years, do they really think they have a chance in hell to change me now?

I think Logan may be more in line with this then, rather than keeping with the previous movies.

It's hard to say without giving spoilers, but I will try. It's not bad writing out anything like that, it's just that movie has a different feel than what I expected. In all the other X men, there is always sadness and tragedy but it's balanced with a healthy dose of humor and camaraderie, and a sense of hope. You won't see any of that this time around. As far as continuity goes, the future that exists in Logan was never even hinted at in any of the others, not that I recall anyway.

This is something of a continuation from what we were discussing about X-Men on the other thread.

It might be an unusual opinion, but I think there is a certain challenge regarding character development that the films face where the comics do not. In a film, it's difficult know convey *why" that dark and gloomy side exists, while also getting the better understanding of *how* that is being overcome, and *when* it works as pivotal circumstances in story line. You can't have a character stuck in wanting to destroy ALL of the homo-sapiens and then ten seconds later having some epiphany of why they want to save the world.

I think that's a problem with the way Magneto was characterised by Chris Claremont for about twenty years in the comics, rather than an inconsistency in the films. Claremont obviously always wanted the character to redeem himself and become one of the good guys, but as he quickly established himself as one of the better villains they had at the time (rather than the ranting nutcase he was written as during the '60s), Marvel have never been very keen on the idea of his reformation sticking. It's a terrible shame, as when you go through Claremont's early X Men stuff, he's obviously setting up Magneto as Xavier's successor, and it's a shame that didn't stick.

As Wayward says though, the biggest problem with the films is that they have to have a Hollywood ending on them, even if that vitiates some of the grimmer stuff in the storyline. Just compare the Days Of Future Past film (SPOILER: which ends with Wolverine rebooting reality so that the Sentinels never got commissioned as a full scale government programme in the first place) to the comics (SPOILER: where despite preventing Senator Kelly's assassination they're still no closer to preventing the threatened future dystopia happening five hundred odd issues later than they were in the early '80s). It's an incompatibility between the two media at heart: films are supposed to have a beginning a middle and an end, whereas any long running superhero comic won't change much permanently besides a character's costume, and anything that changes or advances a character or their world on more than a cosmetic level is bound to get dumped the next time the series gets a makeover.

LadyPact -> RE: Please read entire question before answering. (4/22/2017 10:05:26 AM)

I'm so glad that you caught on to what I was trying to say. As a personal note, I'm not always the most articulate person when I'm tired as hell.

I concur, entirely. To make a film franchise successful, there is some pandering to the audience, most of which want to see the good guys win. Even when producers have a sequel in mind, most movies have to have that 'feel good' element to get people to come back to the next film. There's only so much you can do in two hours to wrap the whole thing up, compared to waiting just a bit for the next comic book issue.

From the films alone, Magento is an awesome villain! Ian Mckellon has done a fantastic job in the films.

A special word on "Days of Future Past" to tie into what we were discussing on the other thread. As much as I tend to dislike time warps, alternate realities, etc, I thought Days of Future Past solved a problem in film that comic book illustrators never face. The truth is, unlike characters, actors age. In film, you have to solve that issue in some way. I haven't seen the new "Logan" film, but how long is Huge Jackman going to be able to play Wolverine?

WhoreMods -> RE: Please read entire question before answering. (4/22/2017 10:51:00 AM)

The casting is a problem, as actors age a lot faster than immortal mutants with a healing factor. It's an even bigger problem when a film gets cast as perfectly as the first couple of X Men flicks were: you're absolutely right about McKellen nailing Magneto. That first film right from the off, he's very frightening indeed mostly because they have somebody playing the part who can make the lifetime of fury and frustration the character has lived through absolutely credible in a few lines of dialogue.
