No, I don't think that was clear. The movies ended with them headed in the direction they thought it was in. But they hadn't yet found it, and it's existence was never confirmed.

You're right... the kids were on their way to Eden.

But what does it matter?
It leaves the door open for more movies.
Even though the mutants were artificially created, it does seem to highlight several places/organisations that are still 'making' them for various purposes.

I still didn't see the movie as morose or depressing though.

Oddly enough, it wasn't the main spoiler of the film that I thought was the dark part. It was one of the other sub plots that hasn't been put on the thread and I really don't think I should put it on because I think it's spoiler material.

I do have to agree with FD that they definitely opened the way for more movie material. Not just with the 'new' mutants finding the so called Eden. There's also some material in Logan that could be movies because we didn't really see some of the things that were talked about. I really thought some of those things could be potential movies. With a franchise like this, there's nothing saying they can't go back and use those ideas.

The whole thing about mutants dying out is a bit less grimdark than the set up Marvel came up with that to do away with: in Grant Morrison's run on X Men it was stated that the non-mutant human race would be extinct in four generations...
(I liked that, as it gave you impression that Morrison had actually read some evolutionary biology, rather than thinking that competing species with the same genetic heritage can maintain a status quo indefinitely...)

If you were either spending time in prison or let out on parole (regardless of the crime, that doesn't matter) and suddenly acquired super powers an we're the only one who could save the world. Then something comes to threaten the planet and the government asked you to save the world, would you...?

(Please kill me).
