jlf1961 -> Marvel Productions takes a left turn into... (5/12/2017 11:14:23 AM)

I broke down and watched Doctor Strange yesterday.

And was greatly disappointed, on many levels.

First, some years ago, Marvel studios released an animated feature length version of the Doctor Strange origin story, which was pretty good, and kept to the original fairly well....

Doctor Strange got into medicine primarily so he could save his sister, who died on his operating table, thus ending his compassion and reason for being a neurosurgeon.

So he became an egotistical, self important asshole of a Doctor who only took cases that would bring him fame, accolades, and of course, money.

Thus, his 'healing' was more of him relearning the basic truths and finding his human side again, and losing his self important all powerful ego.

And the ancient one was Tibetan, male, and less of a pain in the spiritual ass who bent the rules, not outright broke them.

Now, for the feature film staring Tilda Swinton as the Ancient one....

Which makes about as much sense as it would be to cast Wil Smith or Seth Rogan as the next Doctor Who.

First, she is Celt in the movie, a people known more for kicking Roman asses and reacting on a strictly emotional level and not so much for divine wisdom. Want proof, piss off an Irish or Scot female and watch for divine wisdom and controlled response.

Second, where as the ancient one from the comic was long lived due to his spiritual connection to the non material world, Tilda's character drew her long life from the very dimension that they were taught to avoid.

Come to think of it, that would be a Celt thing to do....

In the original story line, Baron Mordo was the rule breaker, not the adherent to the rules as portrayed by Chiwetel Ejiofor, in fact he opened the gate to the dark deminsion because he was not going to follow the ancient one as the sorcerer supreme in the original story.

Basically the new movie is less of a Doctor Strange feature and more of lets rewrite the damn story to really fuck with the die hard fans of the comic book.

What, you mean like making Reed Richards a boy genius rather than the only superhero who's the wrong side of forty, making Deadpool somebody who went into Weapon X to provide for the woman he loves rather than a sneering psychopath with poor impulse control, or making Peter Quill Richie Cunningham in space rather than a massively overcontrolled borderline autistic monomaniac?

Yup, you got it.

Personally I kind of like the flawed heroes as they were originally.

Same here. However fun Guardians of the Galaxy was, I was very annoyed at the changes they'd made to Starlord and Drax. (Wasn't happy about the changes to Gamora either, but they were less annoying. The new version of Yondu I rather liked, on the other hand...)

needlesandpins -> RE: Marvel Productions takes a left turn into... (5/13/2017 4:27:59 AM)

As an avid reader I have always been disappointed by films, barring one where I saw the film first and liked it better than the book I read afterwards. I have sat through far too many films muttering away that this character didn't look like that, didn't do that, didn't say that, didn't behave like that, didn't even bloody exist FFS, and annoyed the hell out of myself.

With the Marvel films my family is split on their approach to them. My step-son and family come at them through Iron-man, my son through X-men, specifically Logan (whom he has tattooed on his calf), me, I come at them through Thor. Not particularly the best of the films, but I know the mythology. Now that of itself is enough to create major issues for me. I mean not only do they not follow the graphic novels as they should (from my understanding, because I've never read them), but the GNs don't even follow the mythology as they should.

What I've had to teach myself to do is to throw everything I do know out the window and watch each film as its own entity. Let's face it, they don't even follow a 'This is based on true events' without making a massive drama that hardly resembles what really happened anymore.

I have been disappointed in just about every superhero movie, reboots, reboots of reboots and every star wars movie save a new hope.

Dr strange got pass marks from me so a little over 5/10

I actually enjoy the shows Flash, Arrows, Legends of tomorrow, and Dare Devil

The Flash : 1x09 - "The Flash vs. Reverse Flash Part #2

The Flash vs Savitar the god of speed (Full Fight) KillerFrost saves Barry from the wrath of Savitar

A comic I didn't read, so the 'it wasn't true to the pages' on this one doesn't bug me.

Would you recommend GotG2?

Since I don't read comics. I thoroughly enjoyed every Marvel Movie.

Guardians of the Galaxy 2 was even better than Part 1 for me. Maybe because Baby Groot is so cute, I wish it stays a baby forever. And Rocket Racoon was more motormouth than ever! Love his assholeness.

(PS: Drax pretty much said Asian women are ugly in the movie and he would never ever want to fuck one! Pretty racist haha but I found it funny especially how he gags and pukes to show his disgust for her ugliness)

Still waiting for DC to come up with anything decent! They seem to can't even get anything right! Let's hope Wonder Woman is gonna be great!

I think they should quit Superman already, as they keep screwing it up.

DC seem to be doing much better in their series.

Flash/Legends of Tomorrow/Supergirl are excellent! But I don't know about Arrow. I find that boring.

They gotta stop making Flash's most threatening enemy a Speedster though. For 3 whole seasons! WTF! I am bored with their villains already.

I think Baby Groot is what is swaying me. Rocket Racoon? I mostly appreciated the way they brought him to life on the screen. (I'm a fan of CGI, special effects, and the work that goes into that.) Of course, as a Walking Dead fan, I wanted to see Michael Rooker play a sci-fi bad guy.

OK, but think about it. Just because Captain Kirk wanted to nail everything in the galaxy doesn't mean that everybody would want to nail every kind of alien out there. Some 'forms' would be attractive and others wouldn't.

GotG2 is the movie we are going to see because WW isn't out yet. [:-]

Yeah, I know its a Marvel thread and WW is DC, but let me explain....

Back in the days of Saturday morning cartoon-land, Wonder Woman was kind of it. All of the other female superheros, were kind of second rate. They were side-kicks or knock-offs because some guy already had the same kind of powers, (i.e., Bat Girl, Supergirl, etc). Wonder Woman was unique back then.

I think a little lee-way has to be given. I still think Christopher Reeves was the best Superman. Can't get that back.

Michael Shannon as General Zod? He was The Sh^t!

If you like Michael Rooker, you definitely gotta watch Part 2, as I feel like this whole Part 2 Arch is about him. And he gets alot of action. I could watch a whole movie on his character Yondu itself! Very cool powers! And technically, he is not really a bad guy. He is the man who raised Star-Lord and he just thieves for a living.

And I don't know if any of you ever watched Rainbow Brite cartoon. The whole visual in Guardians of the Galaxy, even their battle with the Monsters, reminds me of Rainbow Brite and I swear they got their inspiration from the whole visual rainbow background from that cartoon!

Zod was a pretty good Villain. But in a bad movie! It's like, how hard is it to make it comparable to the first superman. They just keep trying to change things up, make it darker, that is the problem. Superman is not Batman! The Dark ambience do not work.

heavyblinker -> RE: Marvel Productions takes a left turn into... (5/14/2017 1:35:14 AM)

I am amazed at how people are willing to watch the same movie over and over.
How many times can we watch someone learn how to be a hero and save (love interest/best friend/the world) from a villain who wants (revenge/world domination/the apocalypse)?

I'm convinced now. Lol.

In the first one, I kind of wanted Rooker's part to be... Bigger? Knowing he'll get more screen time is a plus.

Rainbow Brite was more of my daughter's cartoon.

Zod was really good. Same guy played a part in an HBO series called "Boardwalk Empire". Great cast. (I'm a Steve Buscemi fan, too.)

Since we're talking about movies, cartoons, and the rest, before all of the summer blockbusters come out, the flick to see in theaters, believe it or not, is Beauty and the Beast. [;)]

“There is no such thing as a new idea. It is impossible. We simply take a lot of old ideas and put them into a sort of mental kaleidoscope. We give them a turn and they make new and curious combinations. We keep on turning and making new combinations indefinitely; but they are the same old pieces of colored glass that have been in use through all the ages.”

~ Mark Twain

(Had he the opportunity, I'm sure this would have applied to Hollywood.)

jlf1961 -> RE: Marvel Productions takes a left turn into... (5/14/2017 2:03:00 AM)

Look, as far as the Marvel Movies go...

I am not saying they are not good, I mean I laughed through most of Deadpool.

However, instead of taking the entire marvel universe and twisting them into some obscenely fucked up images of the originals, why not do what they did with 'Watchmen?'

The took a limited run comic series, and had fun with it.

I mean the whole 'alternate universe/timeline' could open some avenues that would give some of the characters a bit more leeway, instead of making it clear it is the original Marvel universe and then fucking with us diehard old school been around since issue one folks.

As it stands I do not tolerate change very well (I am still working on a way to go back in time and beat the mother fucking asshole who came up with electronic ignition and engine control to death in the most gruesome manner possible) so as it stands now, with what they have done with many of my favorite characters, the idea of having Cthulhu show up where ever these writers are having sex seems a minimalist way of expressing my displeasure.

Of course I am still trying to figure out a way to have all those responsible for the cancellation of Firefly end up as sacrifices to some volcano dwelling god or goddess.....

Yes, but in this case there is no mental kaleidoscope, and there are no new or curious combinations.
It's the same humor, the same plot, the same characters, the same music, the same humor, the same special effects.

I love pop culture just as much as everyone else, but there used to be a bit more to it.

Re Cthulhu, I thought I would share this with you, because of the coffee addiction too:) hehehhe

Regarding the topic itself.

I grew up in the 60s, with two sets of boys living next door(6), the only access I had to American comics was thru them, so my history knowledge is practically nil. And I couldnt tell you with certainty who belongs to DC and Marvel without googling, there are huge holes in my experience, but its good to learn as I get older, so my views come simply from the movies and tv shows and my kids.

Ive seen more, but there are tons of them I have lined up to watch.
Ive always enjoyed sci fi, fantasy shows when I wanna get away from it all, but learned more about people than I expected.
Im just about to start Arrow.

I enjoy the movies, altho I havent seen one in a very long time, I will, one day:)

WhoreMods -> RE: Marvel Productions takes a left turn into... (5/14/2017 3:10:46 AM)

LP: I Haven't seen GOTG 2 yet, so I can't comment on that one.
As for the DC stuff, did you know that Wonder Woman was designed by a psychologist (very definitely a proto-feminist and who was probably into femdom) specifically as a positive role model for girls?
I'm not entirely fond of a grimdark Superman myself, but I still thought Man Of Steel was a pretty good film, which got pretty much everything else right. It's pretty unfair to compare anybody else playing that role to Christopher Reeve, but Henry Carvill did a very good job indeed.

Jeff: you do know that the original version of Watchmen was written using the '60s Charlton characters (the rights to whom DC had just acquired at the time), and Moore's editor editor, who had started his comics career as a writer at Charlton insisted on Moore changing them to lookalikes, right? For some reason he thought introducing those characters to the DCU in a story that ended with The Question (Rorschach) and Peacemaker (The Comedian) dead, and Captain Atom (Doctor Manhattan) fleeing the planet might rather trash the property for further use.

guilty
Because I always miss something, usually that makes some things clearer than the first time I watched it.
I have masses numbers of movies and tv shows Ive watched more than once, even three times, I blame it on chitty chitty bang bang, grease, Aliens, Star trek TOS.
I went to see Grease more times than is normal even for a 14 year old girl crushing on jeff conaway.

I do the same with books.
yeah but its usually not a bad thing. for me at least:)

Oscar Wilde observed that if you can't get anything out of rereading a book, there was no point reading it the first time, didn't he?
(Probably rather more wittily than my paraphrase above, though.)
