Oh Dizzy, I really don't care that you swear like it's going out of fashion. I also swear if I feel the need to show hightened emotion. The problem with text though is that's it's almost always going to sound angry to the person reading it, especially if it's directed against them. If you're constantly swearing which you appear to do quite a bit, how are people supposed to tell when you're angry and when you're not?

Yes, I can see that's the case now. I wish I'd known in advance as I wouldn't have bothered creating a thread and subjecting myself to hostility.

Although not easy, attempts are being made to police the internet, and thousands of sites a week are being shut down. For the really bad stuff, such as child abuse, fraud, terrorism etc., offenders are being pursued, and when caught will be prosecuted. More and more resources will be made available to combat cyber crime. We already have dedicated units in the UK to track down online offenders. Needless to say they're kept pretty busy!

What is it, exactly, other than keystrokes printed on a screen, that convinces you that the person who create the profile is REALLY underage?

Do you have a copy of their driver's license, have access to the birth certificate, know the family history, or anything else? Can you PROVE the person on the other end of the screen is not a legal adult? Do you have any evidence, other than the stuff on the net that YOU read and accepted for truth? Do you have one single document to verify your claims?

What tangible evidence do you have?

I’m only referring to profiles where the user has admitted they are underage.

I have no way of knowing if they are telling the truth or not. Considering the site’s TOS and policy surrounding this, it would seem a very strange claim for someone to make if not true. My guess is, and it's only a guess, is that users who say they are underage don't realise there is an age barrier. Most adults don't read the TOS, so probably even fewer children do.

However, if someone states they are underage, it is probably prudent in my opinion to take action on the basis they are telling the truth.

There will be people who ask why I don't mind my own business? I could turn a blind eye when I see kids that are at risk, but then I would have to live with that decision. Perhaps my own personal history makes me more sensitive to the issue. Personally I think any civilised society has a duty of care to those that are vulnerable.

I hope that goes some way to explaining my position on the "underage" aspect of this thread.

You could buy an equally bad off the shelf social network solution for a lot less, and collarchat seems to be just some version of PHP BB2, which I understood was free... unless it's the membership you want to buy... but I don't know how valuable that is. If someone creates a superior product, that actually has community building tools people can use, they will get all the membership anyway in time.

If I were an advertiser, even one who is ok with the site and its content, I would be seriously trying to avoid spending any money on this site. The odds of your Ads getting seen by ANYONE because of all the 504 Gateway errors make it unviable.

Yeah for the last 8 or 9 years I have had accounts on this site it has always been a rickety barely working dinosaur of a website, but at least for the most part it always MOSTLY worked and had at least some form of moderation even if there was no transparency to the decisions made.

These days? It honestly makes me wonder what I might have to actually DO to get my account removed from this site. Is there even anybody watching to make sure the worst elements don't get a foothold?

I will say this though. CS is the only sinking ship I have ever seen rats rushing to get ON to.

Some days the site works... others it doesn't. that's no way to run a business. I would be surprised if it is even making any money. More likely it is hemorrhaging it.

Are you worried about your chunk of the inheritance or something? Personally I dont get why some people get overly worked up or invested in something when they have no dog in the fight. If the owner wants to run it into the ground, there really isnt jack shit anyone can do about it. His ball, his court, his rules.
