You ask a couple of interesting questions, but I think I take umbrage with some of the words chosen.
Sure that's what discussion is all about.

I'll work backwards ...

"Rape" doesn't exist in the animal kingdom because, by-and-large, the females of the species are more evenly physically matched with their male counterparts than human females and, if they're not receptive (either for physiological or sociological reasons), mating doesn't happen (in most species) because the females are able to fight them off.

Likewise you probably know that there a lot holes in your assumptions here. You probably know that in the animal kingdom the male is generally larger than the female just as in mankind so that is iffy at best.

Actually, I don't know that and here's why: I specifically mentioned four species in that part of my example. I mentioned Baboons, Geladas, Chimps, and Toque Macaques. You'll notice I chose primates that are highly sociable; they live in fairly large communities.

In general, amongst the lower primates, there's not much difference in strength between the genders and with the exception of Macaques, there's almost no community punishment (though there is a caste system).

Finally, what I posted were not assumptions. They were the culmination of thousands of hours, spent paying attention to experts.

Silly me. I thought you wanted to have a discussion.

You'll have to forgive me. I'm a little disgusted with this concept.

As humans, as opposed to the other animals on the planet, we're supposed to have a conscious.

this is going exactly as Ithought it would, lol

He should have just put it in P&R where the rest of the usual suspects can join in the fun...

Hi froggy, I have yet to see how this subject fits into either politics or religion, perhaps you would be so good as to elucidate for us.

Because you're claiming that the evolutionary theory is even more evil than the fundies claim it is as it's there to excuse rape.

Froggy, why do you continue make up reasonings that have not been stated or implied? This thread is not about evolution, it is about consent and what it is and how it is to be understood. Get with it or if you have nothing to add, get lost.

You're claiming that there is no evolutionary mechanism for consent.
If there was anything else to your claims in the OP, you'd have an excuse to whine sniffily about that, rather than looking like an evasive little bitch.

No froggy, I'm just saying that there doesn't appear to be one. If there is one, stop bitching and point it out to us, please. ;-)

Wow, out of millions of species you mentioned four, great thanx for that contribution to the discussion.

Yes, four species with whom we share an ancestry, according to evolutionists.

Again, I thought you wanted to have a conversation, not be a douche-canoe. My mistake.

According to evolutionists we also share an ancestry with most of the other mammals on earth as well. How about them or are just to discuss the ancestors you wish to discuss?

you inextricably linked evolution and consent in your OP.

the real question as I see it is---how does "consent" fit into evolutionary psychology, or alternatively, if it doesn't, then where does the idea of it come from.

You're right, I don't know why I expected an intellegent discussion about consent, when for so many it is totally an emotional subject.

In the evolutionary "animal" world there is no such thing as rape, there is only mating with those ready to be bred.

So, the question is why does mankind even have a concept of rape?

OMFG!
Are you advocating that the world should change and it should be officially okay for any man to take any woman sexually he wants at his whim?

The reason why mankind has the concept of rape is because people decided to be kinder to each other and care about not doing things that hurt other people.

No I didn't and no it isn't.

I only brought up evolution to show that consent seems to be a relatively new concept and so ask where does it come from. LadyPact said; "As humans, as opposed to the other animals on the planet, we're supposed to have a conscious" but then didn't connect it to anything. We've had consciousness for a fairly long time but as I pointed out this concept of consent seems to be relatively a new one for us. So, it would seem that consent didn't come preloaded with our consciousness, as LadyPact seems to imply.

Certain animals also eat their young.

This isn't Mutual of Omaha's Wild Kingdom. Even if it was, there are a number of species on the planet that REJECT less than optimal males. Even in wildlife, roughly 80% of males are rejected. In darn near all species, the females chose, based on criteria that is inherent. Brighter plumage, bone structure, muscle tone. Will the off-spring live based on certain traits?

However, the females still select. In most species, the females will reject the lesser of the breed. Their inherent instinct for off-spring isn't an "any sperm will do" thing.

No, I'm not advocating anything.

I'm old enough to remember Lenny Bruce, who did some bits about obscenity and mentioned the phrase "fuck you" and wondered why that was an insult and basically said that it should be a friendly greeting and you should say "thanks" and "fuck you too". Because "fucking" was always one of the most enjoyable things he had ever done.

wtf?

quote:

Evolution says mankind has been here for millions of years and so it would seem consent and gender equality are relatively new concepts and so it begs the question are they things that mankind has evolved and if not then has mankind had a chance to evolve in response to them? Or are these just concepts laid in a thin veneer over deep set evolutionary programming we have received over billions of years of evolution?

if THAT is not linking the two concepts together, I don't know what is.

and it beats the daylights out of me how this---"how does "consent" fit into evolutionary psychology, or alternatively, if it doesn't, then where does the idea of it come from"---is not the relevant question.

Yes, some animals eat their young and I'm not recommending that for humans either.

As for females selecting, yes in some species they do, some they don't. In some species, the dominate males are the deciders. So what are humans? Male or female deciders? Why do you think so? Are humans just making it up as they go along?

I'm not twisting anything any way. Tell me when I said rape was OK?

It's funny to me that when someone wants to discuss something and people think that they may not agree with them, instead of actually carrying a discussion, they just attack the other person.

Allow me to assure you. If I wanted to attack you personally, I'd have taken care of that.
