I am a huge Dr. Who fan. Been a fan since the beginning of the original series. I am a little bit peeved right now. Currently in Germany and will have to see it in German. Real bummer. While my German is okay, it is still hard form me to watch a movie any anything fast paced and still comprehend.

Anyways, really looking forward to the Christmas Special. And in the fall and the start of a new season with Jodie Whittaker. Really curious to see her style.

Unless you are stuck in a hotel with german only tv, the bbc is carried on most german cable providers, and bbc does have an online streaming service.

In fact, the bbc pioneered streaming tv service many years ago, although admittedly it was not so great on the dial up systems of the time

And, while on your travels, if you find yourself close enough to a little town in Germany named Dossildorf (spelling is probably wrong) near Spangdollum AFB, you need to check out the church there.

My father was stationed at spangdollum when i was a kid, and that church survived without so much as broken window when the town was bombed during ww2. It is one of the most beautiful small churches in the area, well worth a look.

Well the problem is I am not by myself. I am with some Germans, and the ladies are going to have it their way, and so we will need to watch it in German. Though I wonder if I could stream it on my tablet with earphones while they listen in German....hmmm

The town you speak of I believe is Dudeldorf which is about 9 km from the AFB. I have driven through the town but have not stopped there. I will need to check it out. I rather enjoy visiting the churches in Germany. The architecture of the churches is so beautiful, words cannot do them justice

I was five when we were transferred back to the states, so all I remember is what I remember calling the town...

And considering that, according to my mom, I was speaking German as a first language since we lived off post, and when we got back here, english with an accent, what do you expect?

I do not think I can recall anything from when I was 5 years old. I think my mind is starting to go LOL!

Again, thank you for the tip on the church. I will check it out on my trip over here.

I usually purchase the episode from Google Play and cast it to my TV (or watch on phone or tablet or laptop.) The downside is you have to wait at least 24 hrs from original air time. It is usually only about $1.99.

There are still a lot of people here in the UK who are disgruntled about Dr Who becoming a woman. By no means just the stuffed-up Tory types who don't like any change of any sort, either. One argument I've heard is that Dr W was one of the few male role models left that wasn't a thug - but a clever man who had no need of thuggishness. And young males could do with more such role models, not fewer of them, etc. Also, from a more esoteric, new agey or Jungian sort of angle: the argument that he's essentially a wizard, not a witch. 'Don't play around with the archetype', so it's said.

Whatever. I'm not so involved in it as I was as a kid. I'll see what she's like. I'm guessing that she'll play it like a sort of Miss Marple, which would be a fine and safe way to do it. But maybe she'll have something that's more creative and individual than that. Regardless, she's going to have a world of keen cricitism awaiting her after her first full episode. An actor who lets down millions of children (not to mention adults) in an iconic role like that is going to suffer badly if she bollocks it up. I know it's daunting for each new Doctor; probably ten times more so for Jodie Whittaker.

Peon,
That is interesting. Never thought about it that way (male role model). I always did like Dr. Who for using wit versus might. Few characters have that quality. Sherlock Holmes is the only other one that come to mind at present.

I love the concept that instead of a weapon the doctor has a screwdriver. He fixes things instead of destroys them. He has two hearts instead of one. I loved Peter Capaldi in the role. Quirky, dark, vulnerable. I’m trying to keep an open mind about a woman taking the role. I understand why they caved to the pressure but I think they should have kept the doctor a male role. I hope Jodie Whittaker does a great job and I wish her well.

*I* know. Hoh yes ... despite only having watched bits and pieces of the relevant season of Doc W.

Loved (and was terrified of) Dr. Who as a kid. Remember the old doctor - and was appalled when i rewatched episodes about how male oriented it was. The little woman was there to provide straight lines for the Doctor to educate and patronize her. Not that this is unique - watching Bewitched and the Dick van Dyke show showed the same thing. Interesting to me from a societal perspective - it was normal for me then, and now is glaringly irritating.

And the daleks aren't nearly as scary. *sigh* getting older sucks in some ways.

On the other hand, i really enjoyed Peter Garibaldi as the doctor - he was an interesting character. And the doctor as a woman should be equally ....interesting..... How far we have come as a society.

It does kind of suck growing up. Yeah, I thought the daleks were pretty frightening as a kid too.

While Dr. Who character was certainly male oriented, I do not feel the show put women down or made them inferior. Women were in many lead roles wherever the Doctor ended up landing. I think 2 of the Presidents of Gallifrey were women. There were women rival Time Lords. Some of Dr Who companions were portrayed to be very smart intellectually. I saw Dr. Who (original series) portraying women as equals at a time when society was very much male dominated.

My two favorite Doctors:
Tom Baker - original series
Peter Capaldi - new series

I have to say I never found them scary, even as a kid. The cybermen, on the other hand ... multiple nightmares.

I think they're taking the daleks the same way as they did during the '70s and '80s and they're being deliberately toned down so as not to scare the kids. The "last" one in Dalek and Rusty in Inside The Dalek were both pretty frightening, but the stuff in between was mostly laughable. There were whole stories where nobody gets zapped by them, FFS.

DocStrange: It was made very clear that Romana (at least when she was Mary Tamm) was smarter than Tom Baker's Doctor, iirc.

Do you remember the daleks' guns kept changing? In the Peter Cushing film they puffed out some kind of super-hot smoke. In all the TV series, though, they fired whatever the best special effects were around at the time.

True. Zoe (2nd doctor companion) was also very intelligent. She scoreed more than double the highest score ever recorded on the Kroton's teaching machines.
