Hillwilliam -> A bit torn (12/21/2017 5:43:36 PM)

I'm a bit torn over this one.

https://www.yahoo.com/news/trump-commutes-sentence-kosher-meatpacking-executive-225329336--politics.html

On the one hand, the sentence was massively harsh for a nonviolent first offender.

On the other hand, the first time you commute a sentence, what kind of message does it send when you say that you want to be tough on illegal immigration while commuting the sentence of a guy who had 389 illegals working for him when he was raided?

bounty44 -> RE: A bit torn (12/21/2017 7:01:39 PM)

the sentencing was for money laundering. the "illegals" was an after the fact thing and as such, separate from the commutation.

https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2017/12/trump-commutes-sholom-rubashkin-sentence-freeing-kosher-meatpacking-executive-convicted-of-fraud.html?via=recirc_recent

Rubashkin was the CEO of the country’s largest kosher meatpacking operation when federal agents raided his Iowa plant in 2008, arresting nearly 400 undocumented workers, including some children.

The bottom line is that he routinely hired hundreds of illegals and now he is getting a "Get out of jail free card".

Seems a bit hypocritical for a guy who promised to be tough on immigration.

Didn't Mr. Trump say "Enforce immigration laws!...Go after the businesses that hire illegals!"?

Helluva way to do it

tamaka -> RE: A bit torn (12/21/2017 7:25:01 PM)

You haven't figured him out. It's more about 'stirring up the pot' than actually changing the soup.

NoirMetal -> RE: A bit torn (12/21/2017 7:33:59 PM)

He needed more votes for something he's trying to push through. 100, nice if you can get it that cheap.

The lip service about humanitarian concerns is just window dressing...

Like Bob Ross painting a few "happy little trees" in, to mask the dung heap.

MrRodgers -> RE: A bit torn (12/21/2017 8:58:08 PM)

Well the cynic in me tells me that those 389 illegals were one tremendous profit center and as much why the US has an illegal immigrant problem, as anything. Then there are the short term visa workers who just stay...more profits at the expense of our immigration laws.

The sentence should have been X years for the money washing and so many years for the illegals...served and done.

27 seems a bit much and what this case screamed for...was a big fine instead of all the years. 8-10 would have been enough.

What does ring strange, is how this is the biggest kosher meat plant in the country, saving $1,000's a day on the illegals and he needs to lie to get loans...he shouldn't need ?

Actually, I have figured him out.

He isn't stirring the pot so much as trying to cater to the Jewish vote.
Between recognizing Jerusalem as their capital and this, he is attempting to sway a very powerful and wealthy voting bloc that has frequently supported the Democrats.

He is losing a lot of his base so he needs to find a new base.
Purely a strategic/business decision.

He's been very blatantly pandering to the zionist conspiracyvote since he announced his campaign. It's a big part of why I find the unconditional and unstinting support he gets from our resident resident hysterical anti-semites on here so funny. The spectacle of holocaust deniers making excuses for a man with Netanyahu's hand up his arse is priceless.

MasterDrakk -> RE: A bit torn (12/22/2017 8:38:54 AM)

So, in other news, a bloke was sent to gaol for improperly sorting his recycle bin.

In the meantime, during the course of his trial, it was found that he had murdered his wife.

bounty44 incorrectly claimed that trump had pardoned him, and that everything was brilliant, in that the murder was after the fact, and there was no reason to conflate that bit of fact with the purity of the commutation, oafish oik that he is.

Maybe it's a solidarity thing among fathers of autistic children? None of the spacehopper's sons seem to be playing with a full deck, and I'm surprised that Baron knew how to work the telly in order to be traumatised by Kathy Griffin's head: he looks more like he spends his evenings playing the banjo at Burt Reynolds...

In all seriousness.

Let's leave the kids out of it. They can't defend themselves and had nothing to do with the situation that they are in.

MasterDrakk -> RE: A bit torn (12/22/2017 1:14:21 PM)

Except as it relates to DACA according to the demented howling imbeciles of the right. Those children are guilty.

JVoV -> RE: A bit torn (12/22/2017 7:00:34 PM)

Trump only has one kid that isn't an anchor baby.

DaddySatyr -> RE: A bit torn (12/23/2017 2:19:01 AM)

If we're using the term "anchor" baby, President Trump has three children that don't fit that description since, Donald Jr. "anchored" his mother to the country.

His two full siblings would not qualify for that term.

Tiffany's mother was American by birth so ...

Just Don Jr. and Baron

That is impossible, as the president is a citizen by birth.

An anchor baby has no parent who is a citizen. Oftentimes, the mother crosses the border to give birth so as to have an "anchor" here

Hence the term

It's safe to ignore whatever propaganda source feeds you that kind of stupidity btw

How long has the kid's mother been resident in the 'States, you fuckwit?
Nobody's talking about the tangering bawbag being the parent who needed an anchor baby.

Calling others "fuckwit" while howling insanity - priceless [:D]

I see the real danger as people losing their already wavering faith in our judicial system.
What's the point of having any court system when a president can just ignore the verdict and set someone free, based on the president's personal and/or political views?

I think you make a good point. I also think that people have had it up to here (holds his left hand up under his chin) with "mandatory minimums", full stop.

They've never been anywhere near fair in many cases because there are always mitigating and aggravating circumstances to each individual case.

Of course, since they were developed to usurp the authority of the sentencing judges (who many thought were "unfair" when the judges considered those "special" circumstances), we're kind of in a "Catch 22".

What's to be done? We've tried both ways. Neither has been deemed acceptable (at one time or another).

The only option (at this point) is when an elected official (who has the authority) sees a case where they believe justice has not been meted out, they can rectify that wrong, employing "The Benign Prerogative".

Of course, this was (if I read it, correctly) actually a commutation; not a pardon. I would hasten to suggest there at least 1,715 people (most still alive, today) that would have a favorable opinion of commutation. Five hundred-four of those commutations being from a sentence of "Death" to "other" (varying ranges).
