RottenJohnny -> Guatemala says it is moving embassy in Israel to Jerusalem (12/24/2017 9:35:21 PM)

I thought this was pretty interesting. I wonder if other countries will follow. What do you think this might mean for the peace process?

Guatemala follows U.S. lead, says it is moving embassy in Israel to Jerusalem

I don't know what it might have to do with the peace process. I think the "Palestinians", making noises about "You'd better not do it" is just puffing out their collective chest.

I know Guatemala is going to still be getting a yearly disbursement of American largess, next year.

Peace,

Michael

Fiscal 2017 of $140 mill to Guatemala. I don't think [she] will inspire much more to do the same and don't really think the Palestinians much care.

What peace process? Trump's move was the final nail in the coffin. There isn't any peace process anymore. The Palestinians have made it very clear that recognising Jerusalem has disqualified the US from any peace broking role.

I've been wondering if these promises to move embassies could get the Palestinians back into negotiations out of fear of possibly losing East Jerusalem as their capital completely.

Except this isn't about the US. Even if you can draw political connections between Guatemala and the US with this decision, what happens if more countries start announcing the same intent to move their embassies? Do you think this can spur the Palestinians into coming back to the table?

heavyblinker -> RE: Guatemala says it is moving embassy in Israel to Jerusalem (12/25/2017 3:50:34 AM)

LOL... the majority of world leaders openly condemned Trump's incompetence, but now because Guatemala has decided to jeopardize their international reputation as a drug lab and join Trump. suddenly the rest of the world is going to move their embassies as well.

Given that they're not recognised as a nation with a capital in the first place, that's not much of a threat to them, is it?

That is exactly what will happen. Many countries will move their embassies and the rock throwers will soon run out of rocks to throw.

The USA once again leads, and no longer grovels. [:)]

The only thing the US leads on now days is how to be a prime laughing stock and comic material

You are thinking of Obama's shameful apology tour.

Obama was the laughing stock.

I'm posing a question, not making a prediction.

If the ultimate goal is a two-state solution with East Jerusalem as the Palestinian capital then I would think they might see it as a pretty big threat. Look how they've reacted to the mere mention of the US moving it's embassy before a single mound of dirt has been moved or a single brick laid.

Someone please tell me, where is all this space for embassies and consuls is gonna come from ..... in Jerusalem"

The peace process has been stalled for many years now, with no hope of restarting it under the current Israeli PM. Israel can try again when Bibi calls for elections (probably 2019) to get some competent leadership. I hope Tzivi Lipni runs again as leader of Zionist Union. They have 24 seats in the Knesset now.

What our President has just done, is disqualify the US as a broker in this deal. The world increasingly is seeing the US as irrelevant under this administration, and this is just another example It will take the next President years to repair this mess.

Lucylastic -> RE: Guatemala says it is moving embassy in Israel to Jerusalem (12/25/2017 6:48:42 AM)

Maybe he will be the last US president.
think on that!!!
LOL

We have been negotiating peace with Muslims since the time of Henry Kissinger. In all that time, what has been accomplished?

Why go on pretending that one can negotiate peace with Muslims.

There was a change in the Palestinian leadership, which gave us a hope. Arafat was gone. Mahmoud Abbas took control of the PA. They split from, and denounced Hamas. There was Israeli-PM cooperation and even intelligence sharing. There was a chance, if only there would be a freeze in settlements. (Logical... since it is difficult to negotiate a 2-state solution, if one of the states keeps moving the border)

We could have had a 2-state solution. The US would have gotten credit for brokering it. Hamas would have been isolated in Gaza. Both Israel, and Palestine would have been economically prosperous. Bibi shit all over the whole thing and built more settlements.

Now, the PA is being pushed back toward Hamas, and the US is being shoved away like an annoying child (no longer respected).

Our hope now is competent Israeli leadership from Zionist Union, and hopefully a willing partner in Abbas,
