sometimes he seems to speak in a sort of hyperbolic self-aggrandizement and im really curious if he's aware he's doing it, or if theres a method to the madness, or if the consumer is simply missing something in the translation.

Sometimes he does. Some of his speeches are pretty well written. Whether or not they're all actually his words, I have no idea. It's pretty well documented (People Ragazine, NYT society pages, Various tabloids, etc.) that Mr. Trump has been a delusional narcissist since at least the early 70's.

Why would elected office change him when elected office is exactly the type of environment that encourages that sort of behavior?
