Does anyone know the etymology of the word "Domme?" I've been told many times (and I think these people are correct) that someone omewhere down the line just happened to make this word up and it stuck. I was told the correct word (the female version of Dom) is Domina.

Anyone know how and when the word "domme" came about?

Thanks

Jules

Jules ... in keeping with my tradition of being useless ... but wanting to contribute ... I can honestly say "I don't know". I have heard the term Domina used quite a bit. Also, I always thought Domme was the feminized version of Dom ......

alwayz ....

LOL ron,

I've looked up the word "domme" in several dictionaries and even tried the online etymology thingy to see if I could find *anything* on that word. Nothing. Nada. Zilch. The feminized version of Dom (according to the dictionary) is Domina.

So that makes two of us that don't know

Jules

Jules, I suspect that Domme is just a cooked up spelling to feminize Dom. Looks a little French to Me. But, I most often use the word Domina, Myself, and refer to Myself as such. Domina is correct. Domme is as correct as anything that evolves and becomes widely accepted and used, and probably will eventually make it into the dictionary.

well its pronounced the same way as "dom" so its probably just the phonic answer to the question "are you a dom or sub" to a woman?

maybe?

I hear quite a few people pronounce it "dom-may" or "dome-may" and it's all I can do to not laugh in their faces. A made up word with an even more bizarre made up pronounciations.

Truth is stranger (and funnier) than fiction sometimes.

To the best of my poor recollection -

It first appeared and came into 'popular' use on the IRC Chat boards and cyber rooms about the time that the term "Domina" was going out of favour about the early to mid-1990's in an effort to allow gender to a 'gender neutral' adjective that had been previously usurped into a noun (as with the word "submissive").

"Domina" had become associated with pro-doms and was considered to be a (at that point) mis-application

The etymology of most of our wording can be found in the evolving debates from the boards and through the chat room 'navel staring' contests we engage in (ad nauseum).

Whether through a negative motivation (such as the banning of the terms associated with the acronyms B&D and S&M on AOL leading to the acronym for the terms in 'D/s') to the need for positive association developing the term SSC - to the twist associated with SSC (RACK) as a result of our own need to dissociate from them once the terms are over used and considered to be culturally "the law" we develop our own verbal nuances that assist in defining, congregating and eventual dispersing of our "own kind".

When I first became familiar with the written word Domme, I was not exactly sure of its correct pronunciation; however, assumed it to be pronounced Dom. I at some point read a post or something that stated that some pronounce it "dom-may" and that was incorrect, as it was of "French origin". However, at the very first munch I attended, I was corrected when referring to a female as a Dom and told it was pronounced Dom-may, and since have heard it pronounced that way fairly consistently among those in my area (Chicago).

The end result: I don't say it at all, since it's one of those that you are going to be corrected no matter how you say it.

You know it's a sad day when even the kink world falls victim to political correctness ... How about "submissively challenged" instead of the gender specific Dom or Domme? Or ...

.... "sadistically inclined"
.... "Dominantly propensiated"
.... "aggressively oriented"
.... "Authoritariatively proclivitive"
.... "assertively geared"
.... "Punishment driven"
.... "maliciously motivated"
.... "Scoldingly biased"

It's about as French as french fries, french toast and french dressing.

A wise decision.

Jules,
You're right, I can't find the word anywhere either, except for D/s or BDSM sites.
I always took it for granted as I read the books and sites that it's correct, plus as MistressGold pointed out, I also bought it because it looks like the french female equivalent of Dom.

Yeah, like referring to someone as "Dominate". Just what we needed.

by saying it looked "french" does this imply you actually know french or just that by not knowing french it appeared foreign and thus must be correct.

people will believe anything you tell them if you state it with authority...but again here is another example of the blind teaching the blind how to see and is about as real as a virtual collar

I don't like the term and never use it and will tell people not to address Me as such if they do. We don't address female subs as sub-mays or sub-mees ...so why the fark as a dominant women should the term DOM be pussified...

I have no issue with women who prefer to be addressed as such but for Me the term Fem Dom is suffice to denote My gender and status.

It's not in my LaRousse French dictionary.
