If you are going to read De Sade make sure you have _lots_ of time to do it. It needs some modern editing ;-)

Remember, de Sade had plenty of time on his hands, so he wrote slowly, and the style of the time was wordy.
His philosophy is easily summed up in one of his well known quotes, "Every man wants to be a tyrant when he fornicates".
Works for me!

"Torture Tomb" by C. Dean Anderson-bloodcurdling extreme torture by a serial killer.
"Raw Pain Max" is another of his sado-horror tales, however I found it less provocative.

Coming from the sometimes difficult stance of 'submissive'; I found "Slavecraft: Roadmaps for Erotic Servitude--Principles, Skills and Tools by Guy Baldwin('s slave) to be exceptional.

It's hardly about 'erotic'...but very good about ways to keep yourself valuable in service to another.  It's not so much a how-to book as a philosophical look at WIITWD.

Hello everyone,  Tomorrow is my birthday and over the weekend I received 2 books that I have been wanting. Right now I am reading My Private Life Real Experiences of a Dominant Woman by Mistress Nan...which so far is very interesting. The other book I got is Female Domination An exploration of the male desire for Loving Female Authority by Elise Sutton. Hope this is of interest.

Chloe, thank you so much for reading chapter one. I will let you know when chapter two hits the net. *In about 3 weeks *

So, far he is receiving wonderful reviews and we are so pleased! It seems there is a real desire for a romantic story about a D/s couple who are portrayed as real people and not the stereotypical characters you so often get in erotica. I even sent it to my sister who isn't in the lifestyle and she liked it.

The Claiming Beauty series really got me off.  I was really surprised when later I found out it was Anne Rice's alternate name.

Mmm... we don't get much BDSM stuff here in Latinamerica, so any D/s book is very hard to find, specialy if you want it in spanish, so, I don't have favourite BDSM books, but I have read one: "Venus in Furs" by Masoch, which only made my confussion about male submission a lot more confussing.

I have never read the works of de Sade and was curious if they are good reads and how mild is the content compared to modern day BDSM practices?

I have read some of DeSade, not realizing that none of it really compares to what it is  that we do.  What  he wrote really has nothing to do with the type of sadomasochism that we deal with in wiittwd.  As far as I understand DeSade did what he did with 'victims', not with consent.  He did brutal things to people. I mean brutal and violent.  If you are looking for books pertaining to bdsm as we know it, I would not recommend DeSade.  And if you do decide to pick up his stuff, be warned that if you're the impressionable and sensitive type, it can well leave you fucked up forever.  I read most of  120 days of sodom about 2 years ago and to this day, I cannot get the images out of my head.  There is also a move called Salo, directed by Paolo Passolini which was adapted from 120 days of Sadom but with a different plot, based upon fascist italy under Mussolinis rule at the time.  It was done completely in italian, in the italian language with italian actors.  If you dont understand the language, you can get a DVD with english subtitles, if youre that brave.  Being italian myself, I could understand most of it, but had no desire to even read the subtitles because it made it even more brutal.  Passolini was murdered  before the film was released, because it was that controversial.  It was the single most gruesome and barbaric thing I have ever seen in my life.  I knew it would be, and it sat for days on my desk before I actually had the balls to pop it in and watch it.  But for some reason, I simply had to do it.  It took me months before I went a day without thinking about what I saw in that movie.  To this day, I have thoughts of it regularly and I have to fight it back to put it out of my head.  And what Im saying is that the movie was FAR more mild than the book. Im not familar with Julia (or Juliette??  I dont recall) or his other works, as I found them too difficult to follow, so I just put them down,  but I would strongly recommend against The 120 days of Sadom. .   If youre looking for bdsm reading of the type that would pertain to wiitwd, I would not recomment Desade, as it could really scar your ideals beyond repair.

Well, I think I watch Passolini's films mostly to test the thickness of my skin rather than for the fun of watching brutality. Now, knowing that I'm really picky at the time of watching a film, I know how high my level to bare violence on the screen is.

Movies like 'Saw' for example, are pretty much a joke to me, even boring at times. 'The Clork Work Orange'?, That film is a comedy, I laugh my ass off every time I see it. 'Irreversible'? it was even cute at the end. But Passolini's... I respect that guy... sheeesh! It seriously gives me the goosebumps and makes me stare away from the screen. But no matter what, I keep on watching them. In fact, I just downloaded 'Salo', and as far as I know, I'll better watch it alone.

So, I know exactely what you mean.

DeSade in fact did most of his stuff with prostitues-however, they often complained when he whipped or beat them and didn't pay extra.
The Marquis, along with massive debts which his long suffering wife and Mother in Law tried to resolve, had a fondness for administering doses of Spanish Fly to the unsuspecting extras at his rather squalid orgies.
Spanish Fly is a dangerous irritant poison, and the Marquis often mixed in a little strychnine and arsenic(both useful in small doses, but damned hazardous)to further heat up the proceedings.
Some of the dwarves and whores he hired, along with a few of his guests, sickened and died, which led to DeSade hiding out in the bin for all that time, kept under comfortable circumstances by the wife and her mom.
To put it bluntly, De Sade was a first class shite, but he did produce some interesting literature.

I really enjoyed the Kushiel series as well. I bought paperbacks cause I recommend em so much they are hardly ever in my house!
I enjoyed The Claiming of Sleeping Beauty, but Beauty's Punishment and Beauty's Release were anti-climatic.
There's another story based loosely on Cinderella that I dont remember the name of that is a decent fantasy read as well.
