What? Heath Ledger is a man?

missturbation -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/20/2006 2:37:26 PM)

I loved the film, i thought it was so sensitively done.
What does offend me is a lot of mens opinions of it even though they havent seen it. The macho i'm not watching two men at it attitude like they are gonna be mistaken for gay men if they watch it. It pisses me off!!

jojoluvr -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/20/2006 3:58:22 PM)

i don't get angry -- just find it sort of sad.  it does, however, tell me something about the guys who refuse to see a movie about 2 guys in love...sometimes i wonder if it's a "he doth protest too much" sort of thing.  but to each his own ...it was a sweet film -- and lots of nice eye candy. [:D] but i've rarely hurt so much for a character on film as i hurt for michele williams' character when she sees her husband with his lover.  my heart breaks for her -- even though it breaks for the 2 men, too...

edited to add that i can totally relate to not being able to quit someone -- even though he's not the same gender as i....it's both a frustrating and addictive way to live....

LotusSong -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/20/2006 4:07:57 PM)

I wasn't all that impressed. It didn't strike me as exceptional.  Just a story of star crossed lovers.

popeye1250 -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/20/2006 4:28:08 PM)

Lotus, one of those movies where the good guys get it in the end?

Bearlee -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/20/2006 4:39:22 PM)

Yeah, I’m with missturbation and jojoluvr…   I dunno why some, otherwise intelligent, guys have to gay-bash.  Is it because they feel threatened?  Hell, I dunno, but it seems a shame someone can’t see the value in a movie that portrays people different than they are.  Aren’t ‘we’, by definition, different than most of the world?

bigjohnson -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/20/2006 4:52:15 PM)

I haven't seen this movie and it is not because i refuse to watch a movie about two gay men, I am just not interested in watching a movie like that at this time. On another note however I am kindof sick of this movie because I live by the "Bighorn Mountains" where the movie was supposidly...that doesn't look right... based. I also work for the Forest Service on the mountains and everyone here honestly has no idea the number of times a week  I was asked by travelers looking for Brokeback Mountain. We don't have a Brokeback Mountain but we have a a close second called Brokenback. On my travels through the mountans however I have found a few spots on the Bighorns that could be very good sequels to Brokeback. We have a French Lick that is about a quarter mile away from Butte Creek. We have Tonge River Canyon, We have Muddy Gap and the list goes on and on.

popeye1250 -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/20/2006 5:23:52 PM)

Miss, if they did a movie like this about two women I'd watch it!

Manawyddan -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/21/2006 5:54:15 AM)

I was quite looking forward to seeing this film, but the fact is, I found it boring.

The sex scene didn't gross me out, but I found the two characters completely unlikeable, particularly in the way they treated their wives. It got to the point where one something bad happened to one of the men, I just didn't give a damn, all I could think was 'served him right."

Also, it did something I see a lot in Hollywood films (often in films about deaf people notice this), which drives me nuts: it completely avoided any notion of community. The events of this film took place right through the gay pride movement! There were gay rodeos! Now, ok, I could see how these two were country guys and maybe didn't identify with all that scene. But I found it incredibly stupid for there to be a conversation about where two men might go to live in peace, and nobody even mentions, "how about SAN FRANCISCO," even if it's to reject it.

Emperor1956 -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/21/2006 6:08:45 AM)

I wasn't going to reply to this thread, but the lack of intelligent male response finally got to me.  Someone said "why do these otherwise intelligent men have such a bad reaction."  Who says they are intelligent?  Criticising a movie you've never seen because of a gay theme is pretty ignorant in my book.  And yes, Jojo...based on the many anti-gay themes some of the previous male posters have in their writings, not just here but across the CM boards, "they doth protest too much".  We often trash that which we fear in ourselves the most, eh?

About the movie:  It was nearly great.  I agree with Manawyddan that it was slow at times.  I very much disagree with his "lack of community" idea -- the entire point of this movie is that these are two men who cannot access the "Gay revolution".  They are so deeply closeted in what they are that they must remain on the sidelines (and by the way, they are pretty clearly bisexual, not gay).  They can't go to SF, or even to Juarez, in any sort of comfort or open way.  The portrayals of men who are deeply emotionally stunted -- not just because they are gay but because of who they are and where they come from -- was painful and beautiful at the same time.  The story is one of starcrossed lovers, I agree.

The most painful and beautiful scenes for Me were with the parents of Jake G. (I am trying not to spoil anything).  The raw love of a mother and father for a man they can't understand, but for whom they deeply grieve, was beautifully portrayed.

It also is one of the most visually beautiful movies I'd seen in a long time.  My wife grew up in that country, and the images -- both of the land and the people -- were impeccable.

i havnt seen it, its not that i refuse over the gay overtones. I have been asked to watch it with someone, and i told her, sure no problem. then she wen and saw it with a girlfriend. this type of story just has no interest for me. if i had of gone with my friend, i probably would have paid 8 bucks for a nap.

swtnsparkling -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/21/2006 2:54:52 PM)

I was not overly impressed. It was Ok
I like both actors
One thing I did not like was the way Heath held his mouth tight to speak try to sound like he has no accent.
They were both Nice to look at though

Whoops.  Sorry Level.  I missed that.  My only defense is that I was blinded by that manly, heterosexual manner you got goin' on.

meatcleaver -> RE: Brokeback Mountain (8/21/2006 4:00:38 PM)

My daughter has seen it and told me I would hate it because it was a woman's film with men and it would only give me something else to moan about. From the reviews and what I've heard people say about the film I doubt it will be a film for me so I'll be giving it a miss.

Relationships, cowboys, countryside, horses, linear narrative. Nah, definitely not for me. Give me a weird arthouse movie any day.

Emperor1956 do you mean that your wife grew up in Wyoming or Alberta. The movie has no one from Wyoming in it at all, and it isn't filmed here either. This is not to start an argument, and it is not to point out anything to make myself seem correct,  I am just pointing out that no part of the movie was filmed in Wyoming.

Just south of Alberta in the USA.  I understood that one reason Ang Lee chose Alberta was to get those town shots that look like Wyoming in the early 1960s.  And apparently it looks JUST like she remembers.
