The key distinction in my mind:
- Embarrassment is a sense of consternation or self-consciousness, often resulting from something unexpected (such as having your credit card rejected at a restaurant) or something being made public that you though would not be (such as getting caught picking your nose).
- Humiliation can be an embarrassing situation, but really implies that you are being reduced in status by someone else, particularly if you are forced to submit to someone else voluntarily, yet against your will to some extent. For example, you are forced by the teacher to apologize to the whole class for some stunt. Or you are forced to grovel in front of a banker to avoid getting your house foreclosed on. This can be public or private. Humiliation almost implies a loss of self-esteem or self-respect.
An embarrassing situation you might laugh about later, a humiliating one you are less likely to.
